I would probably get that spike a lot closer to the center if possible but certainly not on the edge of the tie.

Should have regarded that entire bit there. You don't want dirt covering your rail and ties. Shortens the life and hides issues.

I think you're missing the spike plate that goes between the tie and the rail with the square holes

Historically, the EBT used plantes when they felt like it from what I could see. The yard had almost none.. the main line had some in a number of areas, but this was the paint shop lead.... Replaced in kind as I remember.

oh wow I didn't know all that. From what I've seen from the 50's most of the main had tie plates. Do you know if the main has them today?
