It seems that most do not have a full picture of what the Fed under Powell has undertaken to make sure our economy does not go down the toilet. This pandemic is and was a once in several lifetime event that has made for dramatic twists and turns of economic challenges -- enough to crater our way of life if mishandled. Fed Chairman Powell has done things (as with the fed balance sheet and the repo markets) that was totally unprecedented to stabilize our currency as well as our markets when things were going to heck. He deserves credit for steering the economy towards what is increasingly seen as a "soft landing". Ten years from now it will be required reading in Econ-101 classes.

Take note: (1) Powell did not cite his use of 'transitory' as a mistake or apologize. (2) Powell focused almost exclusively on the past - without offering any kind of vision for the future (beyond anchoring at 2%) (3) Powell cites economic models that I've seen no evidence suggesting they've been updated from past models revealed as too limited (4) Mohamed El-Erian, Gordon Brown and Mike Spence cite in their book Permacrisis why they believe these choices from Powell are mistaken. Time will reveal, but, tellingly, even the BoE had the understanding of duty and leadership to publicly admit and explain their mistakes.

It is relatively rare for high inflation, like in 2023, to result in a "soft landing," where inflation is controlled without causing a recession. Historically, efforts to reduce high inflation often lead to economic slowdowns or recessions, as central banks raise interest rates and tighten monetary policy. Achieving a soft landing requires a delicate balance of slowing inflation without significantly curbing economic growth, which is challenging and has been infrequently accomplished.

But the Fed and other authorities are continuously overlooking the fundamental problem of the lack of an anchor for the currency. The Federal Reserve stabilizes the economy more effectively than the gold standard by using flexible tools like interest rate adjustments to manage economic conditions. The gold standard limited monetary policy flexibility, contributing to economic instability, such as during the Great Depression. In contrast, the Fed's ability to adapt its policies has helped reduce the severity of recessions and inflation, promoting more stable growth.

What he actually said was exactly the same mantra he's been saying since March, 2022... We'll make decisions based on the data. He never said anything different or new. The Fed's goal is 2% inflation with maximized employment. There are currently over 8M job openings, so we aren't in a downturn. Inflation is about 1% higher than the goal. Markets are near record highs and probably over priced. Currently there's not a reason to adjust rates... And Powell, et al, know it. His responses are carefully crafted to not show his hand. Don't be too enthusiastic about a Sept. rate cut.

@jasonn6739 2 ай бұрын
Rate speculators (CME futures) currently predict 76% chance of 25bps cut and 24% chance of 50bps cut at the Sept 18th meeting, so they're predicting a Sept cut as a certainty. I agree it's still too early for rate cuts but there's probably political pressure on the FED to do one before the election to give the impression that the economy will improve under Dems. I wouldn't be surprised if the FED did a cut in September then a hike shortly after the election.

Traders now expect a 100% chance of a Federal Reserve rate cut in September due to moderating inflation and slowing economic activity. The Fed has stated that its decision will depend on further economic data, but market expectations heavily favor a rate cut next month.

@@califomia I'm a trader. I 'expect' to see a rate reduction when I see it on paper. I don't believe what pundits are saying about a rate reduction being baked into current prices. What I'm seeing, as a trader with several decades of experience, are markets that are over bought and nearing correction territory, and having nothing to do with rates. As a group, traders and investors are like sheep, they move like sheep when news is good or when it's bad. They don't necessarily trade on fundamentals (eg NVDA or TSLA), but generally they do trade on technicals. Powell hasn't said, "We're going to reduce rates next month," what he said was the Fed will continue to examine the data and act appropriately... Which is exactly what he's been saying since February, 2022. In other words, he didn't say anything new at all.

The Federal Reserve generates over $100 billion annually, mainly from interest on government securities and banking services. It uses this revenue for operating expenses and investments, with the remainder remitted to the U.S. Treasury. In 2022, it remitted about $58.4 billion. The exact distribution between expenses, investments, and remittances varies yearly based on needs and economic conditions.

Not everyone buys more stocks due to varying risk tolerance, financial goals, and available capital. Stocks are volatile and may not suit everyone’s needs or comfort with risk. Some prefer safer investments, like bonds, or need liquidity. Financial knowledge, market confidence, and personal circumstances also influence investment choices.

Deflation is rarely welcome, as it often signals weak demand and economic contraction. A reduction in inflation is generally preferable, as it indicates stable prices and healthy economic growth without the negative effects associated with falling prices and reduced economic activity.

@@venik88 Evidence suggests economic crashes could have been worse under the gold standard, which restricted monetary policy flexibility and worsened the Great Depression by limiting money supply expansion. In contrast, the Federal Reserve's ability to adjust interest rates and use tools like quantitative easing, as seen in the 2008 financial crisis, allows for more adaptive responses, potentially reducing the severity of downturns.

@@venik88 Studies indicate that economic crashes could have been more severe under the gold standard, which restricted monetary policy flexibility. Bernanke and James (1991) found that countries abandoning the gold standard during the Great Depression recovered faster due to more flexible monetary policies. Eichengreen and Temin (2000) argued that the gold standard's rigidity exacerbated deflation and limited recovery efforts. Romer (1992) showed that the Federal Reserve's ability to adjust interest rates and expand the money supply helped mitigate downturns, highlighting the benefits of a flexible monetary policy in preventing deeper recessions.

The U.S. economy relies more on free market influence compared to major economies like China and parts of Europe, where government planning is more prevalent. While the U.S. focuses on market-driven activity with some regulation, countries like China have significant state intervention, and European nations often have more government involvement in key sectors like healthcare and transportation.
