Do it because you love it or don't do it at all, that's what I learned, I let the business side of it ruin the fun for me, and I've done some really big things but focusing on my failures ruined the fun for me, that was my mistake

First of all, a big thank you for this transparency. It’s important to take a step back to realize the truth. The music industry, once you’re inside, is nothing like what we imagine. It has become an infernal machine, filled with lies, illusions, corruption, depression, and manipulation at every level. At some point, we’ve all dreamed of being part of this wave of fame, of this glittering world. Yet, there was a time when music didn’t push us to consume, to feel depressed, or to stop thinking. It wasn’t meant to lead us to self-destruction. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what the music industry has become today. As time passes, more and more people are starting to wake up. When I listen to the music of James Brown, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and many others, I feel deeply inspired. Their songs lifted us and encouraged us to excel. They carried powerful messages. These artists were true devotees, entirely dedicated to their craft. I’m talking about this because today, everyone claims to be an artist. But originally, it was a true passion, a vocation meant for those who were genuinely in love with music. Now, the pressure to be the best sound engineer, the best lyricist, singer, or composer has suffocated the true essence of artistic passion. We need to become those authentic passionate creators again. We need to rediscover that creativity, that spirit of genius that defined the artists of the past. Let’s draw inspiration from the great masters of that era, because back then, an artist had the power to change the world. Music was a force, a tool to share messages of love, peace, and friendship. Let’s get back to the basics. Let’s make music out of love, to share and convey genuine emotions. Let’s teach this new generation to create and innovate with passion, not for money or fame, but for the art and the beauty of the message.

Same here. I chased music for decades only to learn that I want nothing to do with this industry. Sadly, I wasted 30 years trying to “make it” that I missed opportunities to apply myself more effectively elsewhere. I still do music but it’s just an outlet for me now. My social media numbers on my videos are terrible, my KZbin channel may as well not exist but I keep posting music because I enjoy it. So what if nobody ever sees it. I’m 51 now….music is a young persons game. I just do it now because it gives me purpose and keeps me mentally and artistically engaged.

I actually think that music industry can be very toxic nowadays, and there is no sense of community. That's why someone doesn't feel happy there. It is not the music itself. it is the environment. I am trying to find again the purpose , because when I started making music 16 years ago didn't know I was signing for the following: keeping myself motivated, strong, and positive while dealing with all the toxicity there is in the industry, and doing it ALONE.

As a 27 year old musician struggling to balance the work it takes to stay relevant vs my love for the craft is so hard. I’m finding new ways to have fun but I reached a lot of the goals I set for myself that don’t require me selling myself for some artificial success. I’m happy with where I’m at but I know I can do more. I just don’t know if I want too with all the bullshit I’ve seen in the music industry the past few years. Hopefully something will spark a positive change tho. Maybe it’s this video. & maybe I just gotta find better time management techniques

This is incredible!! Only two hours before this video popped up on my KZbin, I was talking about how deceptive the music industry is, that it completely consumes!! Your words have been my thoughts for several years! After 23 years in the music industry I’ve lost lost lost!! It’s such a fake and deceptive path… 6 years ago I lost a friend who left home to gig six days a week, after two years he died… This particular guy could not wait to get the mic in his hand, now will never do that again! So what has he missed! I often look at big artists, standing on stage yelling down the mic!.. what ya it!?! When we see the greats like Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley etc… Tragic end! To make sound down the mic!,! It’s so empty!! One of the things God will ask each soul on the moment of death is… What have you done with the time I gave you? If we don’t have anything to show how can He reward us accordingly!?.. Jesus said: “A cup of cold water given in my Name will receive great reward” well , are we doing good, or are we just mediocre!?! ❤ Ireland 🇮🇪

I am 32 and I’ve been making beats on and off for the past 17 years. God showed me that I needed to fix certain things in my life first before I started trying to do this full time. My relationship with my wife, my kids and my business partners needed to fine tuned because having a clear mind is key for the type of grind I’m going to have to go through. Pursuing a music career while simultaneously working a full time job and raising a family can be extremely taxing on your mental. Thank you for sharing your experience. I love it too much and use it as therapy but it's also kept me broke. Its like a fork in the road and I feel like the world is changing so much right now that I cant or even the normal person can afford to play anymore. You almost need to acquire every other skill outside of the arts to survive right now.

Dang man. That's rough forreal. Sorry you went through that. Are things looking like they're on the upswing, or is that gonna take a bit? Also, I love music a lot myself. But I took an alternate route early on. I went for the job first, then layered the music on top where I could. But I've wanted to understand the situation a bit deeper, because there have been multiple perspectives. And frankly, I don't think much of them are wrong or without validity.

My biggest mistake as a producer was thinking that living off of music is a "purpose in life" but in reality, it's just a goal but not a purpose. And after you achieve your goal, you start to think a lot about this. Many producers harm themselves because they don't know the difference between purpose and goals. (Avicii is a good example)

Stuck making ‘80s music? Stuck? A hit is a hit. What of the modern practice of quoting lyrics or grooves from older songs, like ‘80s music? That doesn’t sound like stuck to me. Just keep writing. Keep working. Music from any time that is good is good music. ‘20s music that is bad is bad in any decade.

I got into this with the full realization that I could end up on the street tomorrow. I mean for REAL. I'm chronically homeless as it is, this is just the longest stretch of time I've had stability. In this time I have produced enough material and sold enough of it to buy a guitar and start lessons, learn about sync licensing, and become a sync licensing agent with a pretty decent studio. But it could all end as soon as that one bill doesn't get paid or that one car repair or health problem drains my assets to zero. You have to be a damn fool to get into this business, but I guess some of us are damn fools and we get better at it each time around.

First off, you are not an idiot for pursuing what you love. Hang in there and don't give up! We escaped the music labels only to be co-opted by streaming companies. These companies are leeches syphoning the profit off the artist's blood, sweat, and tears. Add to this inflation and the cost of gear, venues, greedy club owners, and turning art into a sport/competition with game shows-there is almost no way to make any profit. I don't use streaming and have boycotted it from the beginning; I instinctively knew it was a Trojan horse. We need a better system for artists and loyal fans, not just casual listeners who couldn't care less about music.

The consequences of playing it safe by working a 9-5 are worse for me. That shit kills my spirit. My contract at my current job is coming to an end. My mom is worried because in the South African economy it's tough to get a proper job. Thing is, they offered a renewal, but I declined it. My mom asked me so many times if they didn't offer anything and I feel bad for lying, but I just don't see myself working there for long.

You sound young, so allow me to warn you of the dangers ahead. I understand exactly where you're coming from. As someone who thought this was a good idea in the past at 19, but now at 29, I can tell you this is a mistake. If you haven't already been making money off the alternative self-work you're pursuing (I assume music), you won't all of a sudden start to, once you stop your 9-5 job. Your savings will run out and you will then be broke and struggling while trying to "make it". Which in turn will make it HARDER to "make it" at all. Not to sound harsh but your chances of success in that condition will be slim to none. Same goes for me, which is why I still have a day job, UNTIL my success comes. Only THEN will I leave my day job. Go back and accept that renewal. Endure the suck, and keep working on your craft. Take off any rose tinted glasses you may have, and be honest with what your decisions will do for you. You can do this.

I Don’t blame you I put so much into my music but the game is evil and everything is controlled . It’s all a game , I’m thankful I did get an education first while pursuing it , but I wish I would of gave up on the chase earlier , I feel like I could have did so much more because I am so gifted , music was an issue my love because I got out my truths and it helped me on my healing journey, that American dream is just a dream most celebs have handlers and controlled you have to be a yes person an sex slave to an Denounce who you are to become successful

I didn’t really hear what you lost. It sounds like you are on your journey. To decide a day early that there’s a point to give upon good work is the part that’s not worth it. If you’re doing work that’s no good then quit. If your work is good then there’s always a place for you.

That’s because making beats and wrapping is not being a musician. It’s a bunch of bullshit. Learn to play instrument. Learn to sing learn to write a real song.

Look for me, what I pick up, you came in looking for the wrong things. Just say making music is not for you. My question from me to you is, how did it feel making music? not what you wanted to make out of it?. That I was your biggest mistake. That is all. Some of us we rather die than stop making music. If you knew what you were getting yourself into, then you would not be having this.
