Okay, so over the past couple of years I have had a dozen or so comments from people 'educating' me about how I should never use cast lead bullets in my Glock 41, and in this video that theme has been picking up, in the form of "you shouldn't use THIS ammo in a Glock because it's cast lead", so I thought I would clear this all up. The common comment is how Glock pistols can't use lead bullets because Glocks use polygonal rifling and...no real reason given by people as to why I shouldn't other than "it's bad". Before I give the main reason why this ammo is really fine to shoot in this Glock pistol, I first want to mention that Glock pistols in .45 caliber use an octagonal rifling similar in design to the smaller caliber polygonal. It's essentially the same design, but the slight change in design actually makes them fine to shoot lead bullets. This is the first reason lead bullets are fine to shoot. Next reason this ammo is fine in this pistol is because this ammo is hard cast, which is technically in industry terms, not 'lead'. Hard cast bullets are NOT 'lead' bullets. Yes, they are made by casting mostly lead, but cast lead bullets are generally a low level alloy of mostly lead with and some other metals like tin added and have a Brinell hardness of around 5-10 hardness. Hard cast bullets have more percentage of other metals than lead and make them have a Brinell hardness of typically 15-20 hardness. They are at a hardness that leaves very little leading to lead up a polygonal rifled barrel - IF this Glock used a traditional polygonal rifled barrel. Now the main reason this ammo is fine to shoot - This ammo is a variation of the Federal Syntech ammo, it even says Syntech technology on the box. Syntech is fully coated to prevent leading and as stated by Federal, safe for Glock barrels. You can even see in my bullet closeups that DUH, that coating is still on the bullets. I have even had people tell me that the reason I got 777 FPS instead of 1,000 FPS because the Glock barrel made it this way. I'm sure that low recoil is because of the Glock barrel right? Also, it must have been magic that when I tested the Underwood .45 ACP+P 255 gr coated cast ammo rated at 925 FPS, that I averaged 928 FPS in this same pistol with this same barrel. I am not the smartest gun guy out there, but at least I have some common sense.

I think the 45 bullet was not sealing on the octagonal rifling of the Glock. If you look at the rifling marks on the 9mm and .40 you see the bullet sealed in the barrel. The 45 shows no rifling marks at all. Test that in a regular 1911 platform.

@GunSam8 күн бұрын
Thanks. While it's not my area of expertise, my experience says It's not typical to need a heavier recoil spring unless it's really really hotter ammo than normal, and generally not needed for lesser calibers like 9mm. Stuff like .45 ACP+P 255 gr ammo or .45 Super, you might need to go up in spring weight depending on the firearm. With .40 S&W it might be needed depending on the load or if you plan to shoot a lot of them. I can't see a situation where a 9mm would really need more than the typical 17 lb ones.

Garrett cartridges did a lot of penetration testing of the 45/70 & 44 mag & found that increased velocity doesn't always mean increased penetration. I may not care for the 40 but the result here says it's worth looking at for animal defense. Of course the 10mm has more options but you only need one that works.
@GunSam7 күн бұрын
I have found that to be the case as well. Often times more velocity means more resistance or deformation and thus less penetration. If you can maximize the power to penetrate deep, and have it just right to where the bullet does not deform, you will maximize penetration. I have had several people tell me that the 10mm version would go feet further. I would guess maybe a couple inches more than the .40 S&W.
@bjdog427 күн бұрын
@GunSam I make no bones about preferring the 10mm over the 40 but an extra 200fps isn't going to give feet more. But then I don't give mystical powers to any pistol round. Thanks for your comment.

It does well but the 40 S&W is a far better choice when you need deep penetration especially when it must 1st encounter barriers such as bone, wood, drywall, etc. The 9mm is loaded at +P with a heavy for caliber bullet and the 40 S&W is at standard pressure carrying a heavy for caliber bullet and look at the results. This standard pressure 40 load is more powerful than many of the current 10mm loads. Ammo companies PLEASE load the 10mm to its potential. Federal PLEASE fix your solid core Syntech 45 ACP load
@GunSam8 күн бұрын
No worries. The 9mm fan boys will tell you that you will miss a .40 S&W follow-up shot from 'brutal' recoil, so the .40 S&W penetration is irrelevant, at least you hit the target with the 9mm to get any penetration, 9mm wins.
@Drmcclung8 күн бұрын
I'm by no means a 9mm fanboi, but I still don't see any need to go out and buy a .40 that I don't already own. To me that's where we run into the law of diminishing returns, when you factor in the extra cost of .40 ammo and the pistol. 20, 30, 40 extra cents a round, it's a considerable expense in the long run. By that logic I just can't justify jumping on the .40 bandwagon. Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to piss on 40

Well most of the hard cast ammo is lead rounds don't know about this Syntech deal but as far as most other hard cast ammo even if mixed with Tin & Antimony whatever else there is a chance they could shatter a little bit and leave debris in the barrel and we all know that's really not good! Even Hickok45 showed that before@@GunSam

I also just thought about it would also depend on the mixture ratio right? Lead to Tin to Antimony amounts? Heck I really wish I knew too! I do know that for me 45 for two legged critters and will use my Mossberg 590 Shockwave for four legged critters! 👍

Federal should be ashamed of that .45 ACP load on multiple levels. A 200+ extreme spread shows a huge QC issue. This would be standard pressure, even if the average was the 885 high. The bullet is basically a RN and near useless for any serious field work.

Federal syntech are frangible bullets at least the core is I don't think these would be as good as hardcast especially with heavy bone animals

@@garysarratt1 The industry is failing in their production of 45 acp. It seems like it is being done intentionally to save money. The Czech company that bought up a bunch of our US ammunition manufacturers could be a reason why too. Personally, he still likes Federal overall.

Being sort of late to the game with classic firearms cartridge testing like .357 Magnum or .45 ACP, I am still trying to decipher if ammo companies are legitimately loading weaker than they used to, or if maybe they always were like this and people just never knew their true velocity other than what the box always said. Maybe i'm wrong, but I have the feeling that in the 70's and 80's, a lot of people's 'uncle Ray' (family firearm expert) probably didn't own a chronograph. As it's been said before, manufacturer rated velocity is often optimistic at best.

40 smith and wesson +p is not a recognized cartridge by any industry standard.

Your comment doesn't make sense. The .40 S&W isn't a +P rated cartridge and has nothing to do with .40 Super, which is a shortened and necked down .45 Win Mag.

Wonderful shooting range. I could spend all day there, even if i wasn't shooting. I own a 9mm, no 40 or 45. I won't be shooting that ammo.
