It’s cool to hear McEnroe call out early that Safin was predictable on the 2nd serve, and have immediate proof as Fed hit a return winner. I feel like analysts today don’t actually seem to do their homework as much like that.

You're missing Safin's epic fail challenge from the second set 😭 would have loved to see that, wanna see how the NBC commentators reacted to it, BBC's reaction with Andrew and Tim was pretty hilarious, wanted to see how Ted and John reacted

Marat underachieved in my opinion
@michaelfoley9062 ай бұрын
Yeah, he played during Federer's glory years, but there was some time before Federer (and Nadal) started dominating that he should have won more. And he had the game to trouble both of them more than he did. Still a great player - two slams, world number one and two Davis cups is elite. Safin with, say, Novak's mental game would have been unplayable.

After Roger confidently dispatched an all time great in Safin, it’s amazing he didn’t win Wimbledon. Safin was absolutely incredible this tournament.

Marat Safin ranked 75th in the world, whose prime de facto ended 3 years prior due to a knee injury, casually beating Djokovic and Wawrinka to reach the Wimbledon semis. Great moment

It depends on what scale you mean by Prime. For example, Novak's best seasons are 2011 and 2015, but we could call the period from 2012 to 2014 prime. The same goes for Roger, if we call only the unbeatable seasons of 2005 and 2006 prime, then 2008 is not prime. If you are referring to a broad period of time, then 2008 and 2009 could also be called prime.
@masters.10002 ай бұрын
@@dzionisis What age has to do with it. Courier was done before 25, Becker and Wilander's prime ended at 24, Coria retired at 26. The human body starts to deteriorate at 26-27. What matters is his level of tennis, and it wasn't close to 2007. Losing to Stepanek and Simon, or going to long 5 setters to the likes of Tipsarevic and Andreev can't be a prime level. You would know if you watched.
@masters.10002 ай бұрын
@@user-yp5ho6ro2q There's a difference. Prime is a single continuous period where he's playing at his best for most of it, while improving. Peak level means the absolute best at the time. Could be at any time and for whatever long, as 1 day or tournament, or a whole year. Novak was at his peak in 2011 (until the US Open), and for most of 2015. Which also compassed his prime, since 2011 until mid 2016. Federer started to decline in 2007 with some losses but his level of play held up. In 2008 his level of play deteriorated and never recovered. He peaked by the summer of 2009 but that's it. Being good enough to still win at slams is unrelated to this.

Imo it was predictable. Not just because of French open. Probably one of the greatest finals epicness-wise, but Federer had an absolute monumental task being down 2 sets to 0 down to someone who was playing the best that year, and gave him a hard fought 5 setter there the year before
