The number of crowd watching him practise is much more than crowd watching ATP500 final match tournament in my country.

3:01 when you consider his toss and motion for that serve look very similar to that of his down the T serve, it is nearly impossible to win games against him if he is serving a high percentage of firsts.

yeah Coric is very good at disguising.

The Rational One Federer’s was out. You can see everyone stops. Federer stopped well before the ball got to him.

this is a highlight, but I think Roger's much better in terms of footwork, placement and variation, while dimitrov use power too much and usually his placement is not so good

3:53 OK, this is fascinating! What makes me say that is Coric's reaction just after he looks up after the serve. He just seems to be alarmed; like he knows he is in danger. This is interesting, because Federer is preparing for a backhand slice return - a short which is not powerful! But there is something about Federer's slice which makes it a handful to deal with. For one, it is the fact that he can hit that shot, that he has on his racquet, either down the line (as he does), or short-cross-court, and either one is a traditionally defensive shot which puts the opponent in the awkward position of defense against defense, if that makes sense. (Personally, I think the best reply to the short-cross-court version of this return is a drop-half-volley; Federer would have a tough time just getting to it. The best reply to the shot Coric has to deal with here is - well, I just don't know. Perhaps a slice forehand cross court, but that is not exactly easy or high percentage. If you can get there in time (which Coric does not), a winner-poweered forehand down the line into the corner is ideal, or just a top-spin forehand cross court (basically a rally ball) is the best conservative reply - and that is if you can get to it in time, which Coric does not, and he wasn't exactly sluggish to react, was he? no. And all that speaks to the power of Federer;s version of this t4aditionally feeble shot, the slice, especially since he is hitting it (very comfortably) on a return.

6:12 if I were a coach, I would absolutely harp on this! GET YOUR SPLIT-STEP DONE RIGHT! Or don't even do it at all. This is honestly just idiotic from a pro player, unless he doesn't do this during actual matches. Coric here is HOPPING IN THE AIR when he should be pushing off one way or the other. It's so stupid. I know it's not easy to time the split-step just right, but that is why I would harp on it ;) If you don't get it right, then enjoy having *this* result you see here, time and time and time and time again. The opponent is like "thank you very much." Meanwhile you are still feeling a little bit at a loss during the next point, and if the opponent plays fast, as Federer does, you will be feeling annoyed and befuddled while returning the serve (oh yeah - another split-step imperative shot), and boom; you're done for that point too if the opponent hits the corner. And at this point you start to feel resigned to losing the game. And now imagine if that carries over into your own service game. Just get your split-step right every time, and don't be fooled.
@cormorant_on_arock79344 жыл бұрын
6:56 and for an example of great execution of the split-step, of course Federer offers the lesson :P Even though he guessed the wrong way here, the timing and execution of the split-step is absolutely impeccable (I would say that even if I weren't a Fed fan). It allows him to very extremely quickly push off one way or the other - right at the time when he needs to. If this were a baseline point, he would probably have a play on the ball - wouldn't have to guess. But, being that it is a boom-boom play at the net, this is when execution of the split-step is so crucial. Notice how Federer doesn't *quite* seem like he likes his position - but guess what?! You don't have the luxury of a choice! If the opponent is about to hit the ball, you are in your split-step NOW. It is not up to you in theseoccasions. … So perhaps there is a fascinating little bit of h uman psychology involved :) (a category in which Federer is top-shelf, along with the other 2 of the big 3, indeed)
