@AdamWarner2 жыл бұрын
I think it could be better framed as an explanation rather than a criticism. Gnome doesn't work like exactly like other desktop environments, but that is intended, it is designed to be different. Fedora is focused on being a basic Gnome experience, and it does that very well. If you don't like Gnome, that is fine, a good thing about Linux is how many alternative desktop environments there are. But if you don't like it and suggest it should work like other Desktop Environments, that is missing the point. Its like getting into an Automatic car and saying it doesn't have enough pedals or a gear stick. They are two separate options, and options are good.
@razorSH2 жыл бұрын
@@NiloNova People can pick literally any other DE and have the familiar experience you talk about. Gnome was never about that and many people like it for exactly that reason, it's all about efficiency and simplicity. And plus, what is the point of having 10 different desktop environments if they are the same ? Installing Gnome and criticizing that it is different from say KDE is just ridiculous. Not quite sure what is so hard to understand here.

But Red Hat was particularly difficult. Drivers were rarely available, so it took days to get printers working, and scanners simply would not work. Red Hat had virtually no media support, so sound was particularly dodgy. But it was the best we could do in those days. I'm glad the "good old days" are long gone.

Great video once again! I actually installed Fedora 36 GNOME a day ago on my primary desktop computer and I'm loving it so far. Using the Magic Trackpad 2, it's the best experience I've had so far with the gestures GNOME offers. It feels fresh and modern to me, and with the advent of increasing Wayland usage it's also quite a big deal that gaming is now also working very well while using it. Most people do indeed expect the maximize and minimize buttons to be available, but the minimalist (no pun) in me actually does like only having the close button being there. It would be a good option for this to be customizable in the options (and not just the Tweak Tool). All in all, a great Linux distribution and a nice release. It's also good that spins are a thing, so people can choose their DE without having to deal with system bloat.

Fedora with Gnome has been my daily driver for a while and I love it. I hopped over from Arch with Dwm. I love how Fedora combines bleeding edge technologies while being comparatively stable (I’m also not skilled enough to constantly deal with configuring Arch lol). Gnome is very keyboard centric, as any good DE should be. It uses a lot of common keybindings. Mod +1,2,3,4 etc launch applications on the dock. If you want to quickly access all your applications, then press the mod key two times quickly. If you want to resize your applications on the current workspace, then use mod+arrow keys. Crtl + alt and left/right arrows switch between workspaces. Alt +f4 closes an application. Alt+f11 toggles full screen for an application. Mod+d hides all open applications. And finally, ctrl+alt+delete opens the system shutdown dialog. Hope this helps.

I agree with all of the basic interface detail omissions comments you've made, and that's why any distro I've tried with a standard GNOME installation have been instead used with XFCE. There's no point whatsoever in using a GUI that forces you to work harder. The criticism 12:40 sounds like they are spanning from heavy usage of the Windows operating system and similar Linux counterparts. Just because Gnome doesn't have say a maximize or minimize button of the window bar or other windows originated UI features doesn't mean that it's wrong. If someone were to use Gnome as their first desktop environment they would not complain about a thing.
@ExplainingComputers2 жыл бұрын
You are right, some of my criticism (like the max/min buttons) is because pure GNOME as in Fedora is different. So yes, it is not "wrong" in this sense, and in many ways I applaud it for being different. But in a world in which Windows, macOS and most Linux desktops are converging to common UI elements and standards, it is not unreasonable to point out that default Fedora is not as easy to use for most users as almost every other desktop on the planet. And even if somebody used pure GNOME first it and did not complain, it would not mean it has as efficient UI, it would just be that the user had not experienced a more efficient system. :) On scaling, the default Fedora desktop is rendered unusable due to a lack of font and/or interface size control. So using GNOME first would make any difference for me and many othr people. If an OS delivers an interface that is not comfortable to read, this is not an issue of which OS you use first!

fedora has seemed to me to be the most stable and no-frills distro that just gets work done. I'm guessing the corproate backing makes fedora seem more stable, but I guess it's that way also because most developers either develop for ubuntu or fedora, but imo ubuntu has weird bugs and incompatibilities that just don't happen in fedora. like if you download a package for an older version of ubuntu, it refuses and doesn't work a lot of the time. plus RPM Fusion adds a lot of the packages that normal people would want, adding an AUR-like repo to fedora.

All Linux distros make this pretty straightforward to do, although there always seems to me to be some editing and other little things that need doing. It might be a little more difficult to check a hash in Windows since it doesn't ship with shasum as far as I can recall. Fedora also required me to download some GPG keys which other distros don't (or haven't in the past). I'm running the Fedora 36 KDE spin as a test installation alongside Debian, Ubuntu 22.04 and Windows 11. It's a very good distro and no wonder that Linus Torvalds reputedly runs Red Hat as his distro of choice.

i tried fedora 36 for a few days and it's one of my favorite distros. i still keep it on an external ssd. for those with nvidia drivers, i would suggest they use the xorg session instead of wayland (you'll be able to select session in your display manager). i find that fedora has the 2nd best software repository and update cycle. but honestly, i would only consider fedora only if i wanted the default gnome 42 experience (which is great and i would've loved it 2 years ago), this and pop-os are the linux OSes i recommend to users wanting to switch from windows. i also like MX (but had problems with hardware support on that distro). my current favorite is endeauvour os. much snappier, lighter on resources and arch has the best quick access to most recent software.

Thanks for yet another great video! I was looking to give Fedora a try since it's one of the popular distros that I haven't given a proper try yet. Glad to see it's looking really good! I'd have to agree that KDE would probably be the way to go if I were to give it a shot though.

If you install 'QT-Curve' on KDE you have even more options to configure ( like the with and the color of the scrollbar ). I love KDE-Plasma DE. You can make your distro really yours to fit, like a tailored suite.

On other distributions, I could enable fractional scaling using some command lie, but it did not work on Fedora. Is it really disabled in Fedora, or do I need to do something else to enable it?

Fedora is known to provide the base minimal (vanilla) Gnome desktop environment. You can pretty much replicate the entire interface of any other modifications to Gnome 3 such as by Ubuntu. Thus, people who wish to customize their desktop can simply choose what they want and apply from their original sources(tweaks, extensions, etc) instead of having to first remove pre-installed modifications. Ubuntu 22.04 ISO is of size 3.4 GB while Fedora 36 ISO is only 1.9 GB in size. You download and install what you want which means you don't have to download anything if vanilla Gnome is all you require. Various distributions, spins, flavours, etc. exist to help the user pick what they desire on their system by default. Fedora caters to people who want an unbloated, responsive and up-to-date distro.

I think the most interesting feature of this release is the use of btrfs as the default file system.

to be clear: gnome shell expects its users to embrace a little bit different, rather simplified workflow. users aren't supposed to be minimizing their windows, that's why there's no window minimize nor an always displayed panel to restore windows from. maximizing is done by double clicking on the header bar. users are also expected to start their pinned apps with super+{0..9}, and run other apps by hitting super and typing their names

The second part is consistent with how windows (and other Linux DEs) behaves as well.

Thanks for this, and I totally understand what you are saying. I did signal this in the video a little when I talked about it being a keyboard-centric distro. But I also think that as UIs converse (Windows, MacOS and most Linux desktop distros are pretty similar these days), so GNOME increasing seems a bit out of kilter.

That's why I install gnome-tweaks and dash to dock, definitely makes navigation and general use much easier.

Additionally, it is also possible to maximize windows by simply dragging them to the top of the screen just as they can be tiled when dragged to the left or right of the screen. The Gnome welcome screen could be more explicit about this, but there's also nothing preventing new users from looking at the help app to learn how to do stuff. I like Gnome because it is different but powerful. I'm not interested in it being a cheap copy of whatever Windows or MacOS are currently doing.

I've been using the Fedora Xfce spin since version 28 without any problems worth mentioning. An in-place version upgrade is a relatively simple command line process. Not for rank beginners perhaps, but not all that hard. Even so, my main machine is now running Debian because the constant software and kernel updates became tedious for me. But I still keep a fully updatged Fedora Xfce (with the ext4 file system) on my backup laptop and it works great. Cheers from Wisconsin!

Great video Chris. Another thing that makes Fedora stand out is it uses the Btrfs file system by default. You can actually see that during your installation. For those unaware, Btrfs (along with ZFS) is a next-gen file system that supports checksums, deduplication, snapshots, and more. The majority of Linux distributions default to ext4, which while a robust file system, lacks all the standout features of Btrfs.

Thanks for the video Chris. I will give Fedora 36 a go on my spare PC. My daily driver is Ubuntu Studio 20.04 because I don't like the 21.04 display.

Thank you so much for your review :) Fedora is my daily driver since some months ago and I absolutely love it. Personally I do prefer the gnome desktop. I'm a Keyboard orientiated person, and Gnome offers me a clean, smooth and fast experience that allows me to be very productive with the keyboard and the laptop's touchpad. The default integration of the touchpad in gnome to change and create virtual desktops just works and is very intuitive. However, your criticism is right on the spot, for example, for such a solid distro it might be kind of weird to don't offer a minimize or maximize button as for default. The good thing it's that spins offer you the kind of experience you might want and/or expect that suits your needs. As some people said before me, the default session if you use the Gnome desktop is Wayland. It "worked" for me out of the box until I tried to play with Steam. For know I'll stick to the Xorg session in my Intel/Nvidia HP Laptop.

The discussion gnome vs KDE is for me identical to 1 button mouse vs 2 button mouse. If you are used to one it might be a bit confusing, especially if you just jump over to another system and not being familiar with it and don't take the time to get familiar: But that is the nice one on linux you have all these options and even if there is no spin that matches you favorite desktop you just install the one you prefer (for the sake of the argument let's just ignore the smaller issues you might run into).
