Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thank you for the Christmas Day check-in. You always inspire me to go play in my worms. I have to be very disciplined to not go disturb them!
@VermicompostКүн бұрын
Merry Christmas to you and your family as well!! 😂 It is so hard not to check on them constantly!! I found a great way to prevent from checking on worms too much...get more worm bins!! Then you can pick one a day to "play" with and if you have seven then it's just a once a week disturbance for each😁 I'm so glad we inspire you to go play with your worms!! If we release a video every 4 days your worms should be OK!!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

@@Vermicompost Yes, it is a very warm season here. No freezes yet! My worms are still working away in the outside composters! So much so, I may have to start another. I was using one just for leaf mold, but it may turn back into worm composter.

Merry Christmas Patrick and Autumn! I would always have melon infused water in my fridge if I had an endless supply of watermelon. When I turned a watermelon half turned up like that, the resulting worm ball looked like a human brain! ~ Sandra

@@Vermicompostthanks sounds like a wonderful idea and yes the look of mine looks good my one bedroom apartment. But I can make room for two homes! And I got lots of food in the freezer too, oh by the way I give them dry leaves too but it seems like it takes longer to break down. Is that okay ?
@Vermicompost20 сағат бұрын
Excellent!! Dry leaves do take a bit longer then shredded cardboard. The more they are crumbled and shredded the better because it creates more surface area for the microbes and worms to attack. A mixture of leaves and shredded cardboard is even better because it provides more structure, allows air, and keeps things from being matted down. You can also soak your leaves overnight to try to give them a head start. I hope this helps!!

Can I ask some advice please, I did a feeding of blended food scraps a mix of a few things and eggshells mixed together and it came out a green slushy, I poured this into my bin and it went in about a week no problems all gone no smell. I did a second feeding this time of mostly sweet corn and carrot peelings. But I didn’t use eggshells this time. I just poured the mixture in this time a gross yellow slush. Anyway the worms never touched it and after a week or so it went bad and it was warm, I’m not joking the smell was so bad🤢 i removed all I could see an aerated the bedding. The worms seem fine. Think I’ll stick to whole scraps from now on no blending again. But do you know why this could have happened.?
@VermicompostКүн бұрын
I have actually experienced the same thing!! Each feeding is completely unique and has it's own microbiome inside. I had found in the past that blended feedings seemed to take longer...and then when I tested it, the worms ate the blended first: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqqWd4Gemq95pcU So I think the corn/carrot peel slushy probably just went anaerobic and might have started fermenting, especially if you felt some heat coming off it! Slushed up corn in particular can turn to alcohol (bananas as well) so the solution is to feed less and spread it out more when you do feed it the slushy. More surface are will help so the worms can attack it better...the key is to feed an amount that the worms can eat before it goes anaerobic. Hopefully this makes sense...I hope it helps!! Thanks so much for watching Ryan!!🪱🪱🪱

I also raise earthworms and have a question. What effect does mold have on earthworms? There are many different types of mold, but can I feed them and can eat them? Also, is it possible to use natto bacteria, which are said to be a very strong fungus, to eliminate other bacteria and mold that grow and purify the soil?

A few weeks ago i opened my hut to feed my worms, and the whole top was covered with a white fuzzy mold. And when i dug deeper, there was mold that looked and felt like popcorn. And it only affected the top most bin. I didn't do anything different from how/what i feed them. Don't know how it showed up in there. Didn't seem to bother the worms any, even seamed to have more activity than normal. So i just mixed it up, feed them as normal and let it go. Just went to check it and the food i gave them is barely eaten, but the mold is now only 25% of what it was. They must be eating the mold. Still tons of activity and no signs of ill effects or spreading. Still just in the top tray. Anyone got any idea of what happened?
@frosty629711 сағат бұрын
Unsure of the mould and their shape; but, I find (and you’ll probably see if you watch more of Vermicompost Learn By Doing) that many moulds are adored by worms. Helps break down whatever is in there and convert it into a worm friendly manner for them to get to work!
