You can tape closed the inner lid notch or use "U" shaped screening over the hole - it's temporary while feeding. Might of put less syrup on that first hive - then topped it up when it was gone. Difficult to shift (more than likely spill) that much syrup if they don't take it down before the next inspection and be sure to keep it covered if you do take it off so you don't end up with robbing. I really like the hive top feeders.

@@JeromeBeeFarm I have a beekeeper friend who set their top feeder on the ground then tripped over it. The feeding frenzy that ensued was incredible. I on the other hand forgot to slid the lid completely back on a hive and had a frenzy that I didn't notice until the next morning. I'd gone to get more syrup and then got side tracked with another hive. I tend to feed, add syrup, just before dusk - everyone is at home by then so fewer bees, wasps, yellow jackets flying around. Hopefully all the syrup gets taken down into the hive overnight.
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, with a new component comes a whole new set of problems. lol The old one that I had been using has side handles on it that stick out and the other hives I used it on had covers I had purchased. The last hive I put it on had a cover that I had built and the sides were longer and sat right on top of those handles and I didn't notice. It left a small gap for bees to get under there and it was a nasty mess with at least 1000 drowned bees. I took it off and set it out for them to finish it off. There were enough dead bees in there that they couldn't drown any more. The next day I emptied it out all the casualties and put it back on with a spacer on top and filled it back up. I was really disgusted with myself for not noticing that issue. I need to pry the handles off of the thing. The Mann Lake ones have the cut out handles, so that can't happen.

Those style feeders are nice for pushing the feed into the hives. The two issues I ran into with a similar feeder was that they tend to kill bees, are messy to get out off the hive when it is time to remove them, and its hard to see if the plastic has cracked. Twice I poured sugar water into them and noticed a pool of fluid coming out the bottom board. I recommend testing them before putting them on the field in the future as they get older.

I hope they work out for you. How long will it take hive 30 (the bigger hive) to take down the 3 gallons? I use a migratory top with a 2 3/4" hole in it and put the 1 gal. pails with the screen in the lid. Bees will take a gallon down in 3 days or less of 2 to 1 syrup. They are less than $7.00 at Blue Sky. Love your wilderness area you drove through with all those flowers and insect habitat. Thanks for the video - let us know how they work.

I'm not buying another, just switched to ceracell. the 2 Mann lakes I have are the new ones. the screen rusts and bends on the "improved" one. once bees get past it they are trapped and the dying begins. Mann Lake needs to make that screen out of solid plastic that locks in tight.

I'll Tell a secret to the best french fry or tater logs. Make up a flour season, of 50/50 corn meal and flour, Add onion powder, salt, pepper and cayenne powder. Or habanero powder, Slice up the potato's, rinse off, Then throw the season flour on them as flipping them. Then deep fry them in a basket 2 min. Left them out for 5 min let the oil get hot drop them back in until golden brown. Take them out on paper towel Then season them with salt, cayenne powder, and onion powder. YUM for breakfast. take the french fry with a fork mash them up put butter on the grill, or skillet place the mash up french fry on the butter, until a little darker brown, GOT SOME EXCELLENT HOME FRIES and it already season. YUM make a big batch of them . put the fries in a big baggie, So you can make home fires for in the morning or have french fries when you want! Just warm them up

May I suggest: Move the big hive to a sunny spot during the middle of the day and leave the weak hive there to collect the foragers. This will boost the weak hive enabling it to protect the hive from the SHB. With the added resources the weak hive may not be able to protect the additional resources you are giving. It will kill 2 birds with one stone.

Darren, the Guardian’s website says a Queen can get in and out of their entrances. If they are out I’ve bought some from Barnyard Bees and Funny Bug Bees. They definitely work or help. They usually cost $9.99 each and probably get them manufactured for fifty cents at the most. Just a little plastic molded with 2 tiny screws to install them and I’ve never received an extra screw anytime when I purchased them. They need to be removed for the winter. If you try them read everything on the Guardian website. I’ve never any instructions or documentation with any.
