Weighing in at about 9,000 pounds, my Sister, Bubbles, at a young 37 years old, is the most interactive African elephant in North America.
My father Doc Antle rescued her in the early 1980s, when her wild herd was killed for their ivory. Bubbles was one of the lucky few that survived. Between 1970 and 1989, African elephant populations were halved as legal “regulated” trade in ivory enabled laundering of illegal ivory from poached elephants.
Even after the ban in 1989, more than 33,000 wild elephants are still killed each year.

Indeed. In ancient times kings would give a white elephant to someone they didn't like. White/albino elephants were sacred and couldn't be put to work, so the person was stuck feeding it. Today a "white elephant" is a large expensive gift - like a grand piano or a life-size statue - that the person doesn't want but can't be easily sold.

"Tawny"? You, are a REAL LIFE "Mama Tembo" (Elsa Martinelli's character in the 1962 John Wayne movie, "Hatari!"). I dunno who's prettier, you or Bubbles(Laughs!!)--9,000#'s of Pachydermous love. I had MY OWN blessed pachie experience, many years ago, at the now-defunct Marine World/Africa U.S.A. in Vallejo, California. I got to ride an African Cow, and she was so gentle and sweet, that I thanked her after the ride. I hugged her the best that I could, talking softly all the time to her. She rested that heavy trunk on my shoulder for a spell, until her handler shooed me away; I think he was JEALOUS(Laughs!!)!! I even tried there, to get close to a big Flying Fox bat, that was part of a presentation, but that handler shooed me away, too. Foxies have such sweet faces, too. This bat was huge, a body very much the size of a very small housecat.

To the folks that commented that this elephant must be "lonely" or "she should be with other elephants" because they are "social" creatures: Yes, elephants are social creatures just like humans in many ways but, like humans, elephants don't absolutely need to belong to a social group consisting of their own species and, in fact, neither do humans. A single elephant being a member of a human family is more or less equivalent to a man who lives in the wilderness who keeps several dogs with him for hunting, for warmth, for safety and companionship, even amusement and mental stimulation (he returns the same to his dogs). An old lady living in a shack in back country may keep one or more cats for some of the same reasons. Not being able to have any social relationships or bonding with other responsive creatures at all is what full loneliness is. This elephant does not feel lonely -- she is the baby of the family, and pampered as such, just like your cat or dog --- and she knows it -- and is one happy camper for it -- just ask her.

They are herd animals, females in particular, & if you can train that elephant to shake hands or whatever the fuck they were doing, then they can train it out of aggression toward other elephants.
