Do your tiops breed and if they do do you just keep the water? Im trying to figure out why they HAVE to have a dry period just to hatch.
@TriassicParkTriops
@TriassicParkTriops Жыл бұрын
They are vernal pool inhabitants in nature. It really lies in their nature aswell: Triops hatch in pools filled with rainwater, during spring there are sometimes rain storms that cause large puddles to occur. The eggs sense the fresh rainwater and start to hatch as the pool water starts to warm up during a warmer spring day. Several weeks / months later the colony has already naturally died or the pool slowly starts to dry out killing the last inhabitants of the tiny bit of water left. While they were in these puddles they released tons of eggs, just after two weeks of age. They will do so, on a daily basis and continue to do so till the very end sometimes. For this reason, they dont live in lakes or rivers, its a whole different type of " water inhabitant" if you look at it hahahah. I hope that sheds some light on the case 🙏

We had some triops a few years ago. It was our first time and our tank wasn't perfect but one triops lived for a long time, we named him Jerry. He was excellent and his very favourite thing was to be fed pellets with a pipette - my husband used to literally give the pellet to Jerry, and Jerry would get SO excited and then grab onto the pellet and gently sink, upside-down, to the floor. We loved Jerry.

The species hasn't changed in over 300 million years, proving that old saying: "If it ain't broke don't fix it!" so there's no point in further evolution! I lived out in El Paso for a few years and in the "rainy season" out there, these guys could be found in the water that puddled up along with some fish and frog the would burrow deep down into the earth once the water dried up. How long do these guys live in an aquarium and do they need artifical dry seasons?
@TriassicParkTriops

That's totally awesome! They can live for up to 3 months in captivity. The eggs need a dry period to become viable for hatching 🙏

Hi Triassic Park Triops, my triop is swimming crazy. It is very rare for him to turn the right way up at all. He swims upside down and lays on his back on the sand at the bottom with his legs going crazy. 99% of his little life seems to be upside down! This has gone on for weeks. He has shed multiple times and is feeding/growing fine. Have you got any ideas as to what's causing it or is he just a weirdo? 😄 PS. Your set-up and triops are impressive and beautiful! I'm jealous in all the nicest ways 😊

Hello Jessica! If you have Instagram: feel free to send me personal message at @triassic_park with a small video of the behaviour, in case you dont have Instagram, feel free to send the video by mail to triassicparktriops@gmail.com Its hard for me to tell by text sometimes, the molting and regular feeding sounds great! Although you seem to witness problematic behaviour, wich definitely interests me to observe. If this is possible for you to do i'll try to give a detailed rap. Of what might be going on if the behaviour is similar to whats noted in my journal 🙏

The triops is digging in the narrow space under the wood because it needs the support. The reason for this is because they can't dig in pebbles, they're not strong enough. They need fine sand.

Great video. How do you get so many triops at one time? I seem to have a pretty high infant mortality rate, not sure if its just natural and I am not using enough eggs or if it is cannibalism. I put about 20 eggs in a small hatching dish.

I usually raise colonies of 75ish Triops, I use multiple hatching units of 0,5L and a dedicated hatching tank (25L) before they enter the 60L. Naupliar loss is something i always witness, i guess this is Just survival of the fittest.
