I actually just finished an experiment with a combination of a boss and nearfield. I put a pair of 21's behind my back row in a vented enclosure, but part of the enclosure is actually the riser that the rear seats are on. This way you get the vibration below you, behind you, and some decent SPL. If you are going through the trouble of building a riser, why not use those cubic feet for a large, low tuned, seat shaker?

I second that! Yesterday I installed NF and watched a few scenes. In Black Hawk Down I was literally sitting in the helicopter! It just sucks you into the movie. I was shocked! And it was just cheap 80W 6" sub from LG I had lying unused for years lol. Sadly nothing else is this narrow (less than 8") that fits behind my sofa (I can't move it much = multi purpose room). But it still rocks and can be really loud and tactile, sometimes even overpowering my main sub.

What do you think about those butt kickers aka those transducers that you can mount to the underside of your chair and have a little amp that drives them?
@jvonengeln2 жыл бұрын
Mechanical transducers I’ve not found to be as naturally feeling as mounting subwoofer drivers, but they can work excellent for the deep frequencies. Try using something like a Buttkicker to bring out the lowest frequencies below 30Hz - you can set a LPF using a minidsp to help shelf off the higher bass frequencies.

Everytime I see or demo a nice theater room without a nearfield sub i die a little inside. Huge subs up front and rear still don’t have anywhere near the tactile or chest kick that nearfield does. It’s a absolute game changer. Night and day difference. I purposefully gave up a second row in my room just to have my nearfield sub.

Sorry guys, I’m new to the whole NF concept but would something like a SVS PB-1000 Pro or SVS PB-2000 Pro behind the sofa also work? Unfortunately I don’t have a dedicated theater room (this would be in the living room) so space and money would be very limited. I guess these subs wouldn’t have the power to provide a cheap NF experience, would they? Thanks for insight guys.
@shaneducholke3642 жыл бұрын
The SVS SB series would work better since they are sealed subs. Sealed it by far the best option for NF. That said, if you you only had 1 sub for a 3 seat couch, a ported sub is also a good option for feeling it across the couch as sealed really focuses it on the seat in front of you. You also do not want to have the sub placed any further away from the back of your seat than half the sub diameter, so an 18" subs should not be any further from your seat than 9" and preferably that should be the distance to the front of you backrest
@Techie-B2 жыл бұрын
@@shaneducholke364 thanks for the reply. Since my main sub would be ported (SVS PB-3000), I don't think a sealed would be a good idea (something about different timings between sealed and ported for example). Your advice about ported might be a better option. I just thought I would ask before buying something that might not actually do anything.
@shaneducholke3642 жыл бұрын
@@Techie-B you are correct not to mix sealed and porter if possible but near field is the one place that works. I have 3 18" Marty's for far field and 3 18" near field subs and you don't really hear those subs, but you sure as heck feel them. The couch being a few inches from the back of the couch is completely different than nothing in front of the sub, so while they are different the differences are less noticable. If you habe a MiniDSP, you can mix sealed and ported with a lot of effort, but it can provide your room with the best of both worlds and give you bass that is low but also tight
@kovrcek2 жыл бұрын
It will definitely work perfectly. I know because just yesterday I installed 80W!! 6" cheap LG sub that I had lying around for years. It is very narrow so perfect to fit behind my sofa which is stuck to the wall basically (also don't have a dedicated room). I didn't expect much but man it doesn't only work, it rocks! As these guys say in the video, 7 subs in the room = 1 near-field. So you really don't need a ton of power. My Yamaha sub can shake the whole house, but this little "sub" is very much on par with the yamaha, sometimes even overpowers it as you basically sit in the bass-bubble. Yeah of course doesn't play that low as yami (15Hz), only like 25Hz, that's the biggest downside really, but I wouldn't be able to fit anything bigger behind the couch anyways. Also perfect for night watching. Even 20% power on my yamaha sub can wake up my wife (2nd floor is still shaking a little). Going lower with power makes the sub basically mute at listening position when you listen with low volume so no-go. But with NF sub I can have it cranked surprisingly high but it doesn't reach 2nd floor and my wife. It's perfect. And when you crank it up I get blurry vision lol. So go big sub only for low freq extension. Power is not an issue believe me (only maybe if you have thick heavy sofa, I don't). And because it's a small sub it's super snappy. I have also 2 cheap 100W bass shakers bolted directly into the sofa (not on the legs) and not even playing them at full power - it is quite enough massage for me. But still that NF sub can shake you sometimes more and in a different way. Also playing notes you never knew were there because the room is no longer an issue. Going with SVS in NF must be pure bass heaven, try it you won't be disappointed :D
@Techie-B2 жыл бұрын
That's awesome @@kovrcek. Thanks for your input. Did you do any room correction with your AVR or have a mini DSP that you used to tune the NF sub? That would also be interesting to know. Sorry about all the questions. Like I said, I'm very new to the NF concept. Thanks in advance.

I have a sealed SVS SB3000 up front. I've never tried two subs before. Will it work also putting a ported 12" behind me?
@GurvanBHC7 Жыл бұрын
you will need to tweak with a Minidsp your sealed sub with a high pass filter, otherwise you will get cancelation because of the ported sub you want to add. It is not simple to match sealed and ported

Try this with my model with 13 put it directly behind my chair so far the most tactile and smoothest base response I have yet to have in my room tried multiple places in my room in a front corner out of corner turning towards the corner, no matter what I did it seemed like around 40 to 60 maybe 70 Hz was almost an audible Now the whole frequency band that I have set 80 to 20 because I run mine with maximum output all almost the exact same noise level cleared up the room problems because I think the sound is directly there at your ears not having a bounce from everywhere first

The most powerful amazing slam compared to VNF comes from BossBack or HoverBack. I have dual PSA TV2112 21" monsters in VNF and they cannot compare to what my triple 12" gx1200 BossBack can do. Sure, if push them to insane levels I can get awesome TR too but when you have 3 drivers literally screwed to your sofa back, it's hard to go back ( or punish your ears with super loud spl levels lol ). They do make sound as well so is not not vibration And for the other part of the TR experience, I love Hovereze under my sofa platform in cone up configuration and double stacked tubes When it's all perfectly aligned, it is a jaw-dropping experience 😊

Jonathan said: "If you don't want to worry about integrating far-field and near-field subs, the near field takes that out of the equation because it's not making any sound". kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKGXZmune5WtaJI I think he mispoke and meant to say, BOSS takes that out of the equation because it's not making any sound. Near-field does create sound, albeit at lower levels because of its proximity to the listener.
