@@DayDreamerVR Oh cool! IMHO you don't need two channels unless you want "wind curving." I have wind curving on in my sim, but I honestly don't even notice it while racing. Might be more perceivable in a truck sim? Those fans I think should work well. I'm using four 230CFM 5000RPM. When they all spin up to full speed it sounds like a jet is taking off - almost too loud.🤣 CFM is more important than RPM in my opinion, but for small fans the two are closely tied. Nevertheless, it's fun building this stuff for my rig rather than just buying something pre-built. Let me know how yours turns out when you are all finished!

I hear the most powerful smaller fans (3 or 4 inch) are commercial refrigeration fans which are of coarse pretty noisy. Also, that is seriously thick tape maybe 1/8 inch thick... must be good stuff. I've never considered the role of shrink tubing to be aesthetic but it definitely does do that too. Thanks... very informative.
@attorneyssimgarage1482
@attorneyssimgarage1482 2 жыл бұрын
LOL...yeah, it's Alien Tape. It's what I had around. It's good for certain applications. Three big rolls for $20. For me shrink tubing is aesthetic as it gets when it comes to trying to hide the red wire. I don't have a lot of room for my rig area, so wire tubing and consideration for aesthetics is limited. Thanks for comment!

Can i use a 19.3 volt 9.3 amp power supply instead as i already have one save me buying another one the moto board says it has a max of 16v but i was wondering if it may be able to handle it. I will be running the same setup as you except for the fans ill be using 6000 rpm. One last question what wires did you use at the start to solder on the moto shield. Thanks in advance
@attorneyssimgarage1482
@attorneyssimgarage1482 Жыл бұрын
I would not use the 19.3v power supply. While the 16V moto shield maybe able to handle it initially, it may fail over time. The moto shield may output too many volts for you fans - not sure because I can't remember the specs of the board off the top of my head. If you blow your moto shield and fans, it will likely cost you more than buying a power supply. Go to a Goodwill or thrift store if you have one near. Sometimes you can find adequate power supplies very cheap.

@@c.j2527 Motion simrig is on my whishlist. I built my cockpit myself out of steel pipe and plate. Unfortunately, I didn't future proof it, so there is no way to add motion to it. I'll eventually have to start over with a rig that supports incorporating motion; although, space is somewhat limited and might not be possible. At this point, I don't think I could race without Simhub. I also use Crew Chief and SimDashboard. I'll have to check out Simtools. Admittedly, SimDashboard is somewhat redundant in terms of data, except that I use SimDashboard on a tablet and it's fairly simple and quick to add/remove datapoints in sims without having to design a layout in Simhub.

I'd be intrigued to know what speed is coming out of the end of the pipes? I am still debating upgrading from a Uno R3 board with two 4500RPM Fans that blow up to 213CFM as I have a few spare sets, one set is 5000RPM and blow 280CFM but I need the monster Moto board to do so. I did buy a cheap anemometer to measure speeds and I learnt a few things. Seems hard to get a good one in the UK? Has it been discontinued?

The controller is called Monster Motor Shield VNH2SP30. I don't think it has been discontinued. Ebay and Amazon have them on their sites. I never measured the difference because it was apparent how much more the new ones blew that I didn't feel I needed to.

Great video, I’m about to attempt the same setup, question I have is 24 volt vs 12 volt. I’m looking at 140mm fans which run on 24 v and lower amps per fan. Obviously I need a 24v power supply but would the arduino and motor shield run at 24 v? Thanks.

Good question! According to the Amazon page for the motor controller (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07V3KR6N6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) the max volts it can take is 16v, so 24 would be too much. I was thinking you could use these voltage converters (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081N6WWJS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and step down to 12V, but they have max 2amp output. So you might be able to use them depending on the amps your 24v fans need???

Not sure if this is compatible with the UNO R3 or not? I was trying to lower the amps used in this project hence the 24 volt fan that only uses 1.7amps vs 2.7 for the 12 volt version. @thoritissimgarage1482 Quick question. I've followed this build guide, but I cannot get the output of the 2 channels above ~26mah. I'v checked all gain settings multiple times, and resoldered everything as well. after almost giving up, I found that the simhub Sketch is for rhe moto shield with a VNH2SP30 and mine has VNH3SP30... Is this what is causing my woes? If so, do you have any idea what I need to change?
@attorneyssimgarage1482
@attorneyssimgarage1482 10 ай бұрын
Hmm...hard to tell with that info. I doubt it is a difference in the moto sheild version. What is your power supply rating volts/amps? .26mah is not necessarily wrong. The fans need 12V to spin and not a lot of amps, so check what the moto sheild is putting out in terms of volts. Are you using a multimeter to test channel output on the board? Do your fans spin at all? Do you get a red light coming off of board. Simhub can also be a little confusing. Is simhub recognizing the device?

Thanks for asking. Are you using an external power supply? The motorshield will not run off usb power. Do you have a multimeter? If so, test the wires to the fans to see if they are being supplied correct voltage. If not, trace back to the board and check if power is being supplied. If no power, check to make sure your external power supply is working. If the motorshield is is reading voltage from the external power supply but not outputting power to the fan connections, the problem is most likely a simhub configuration issue or a bad motorshield board. Does Simhub recognize the Uno?

@@lafamille2839 Awesome - 7000rpm is 2000rpm faster than the ones I use! Yes, the 15amp power supply should be enough for the 5amp fans as long as you are using only two fans and those fans run on 12V. If the fans use more than 12V, you run the risk of damaging the fans and/or power supply, so check that your fans only need 12V to operate. I bought my box on Amazon, so I don't have an .stl file for 3d printing. I eventually replaced the box in the video with a bigger plastic electrical box I bought at local Home Depot type store.
