I really appreciate the talk you shared about finding ways to get along with parents. I’ve read somewhere that we keep forgetting that before becoming our parents, they are also just individuals like us with their own quirks and personality (and they still are! Aside from the role of being a parent). If I am a 31 year old daughter, then my parents are 31 years old mom/dad. They’re also learning along the way to become a parent. If they made a mistake, they’re already trying their best and they will learn, so will we ❤️

This made me cry, because I know how this is. My dad passed 3 years ago I am 29 now and I didn’t know any of this until my dad passed. My world turned 360 I live 5 hours from my mom but I do and try my best for her ever chance I get because she only has us kids and she is still learning even though she 50. We both are learning together.

I live with my parents and I just turned 26. After spending some time away from them in college and coming back to live with them and be closer to work, I realized that same thing about the triggers. Once a parent, always a parent. No matter how old the kid, a parent still wants what’s best for their child.

OMG i relate so much to what you were saying about your mum!! Its so nice and reassuring to hear you talk about your mums fearful personality in such a kind way. I have the same experience but it causes me to get so frustrated and upset over our dynamic or the 'toxic' parts of our relationship, to the point where we arent speaking at the moment. I think its hard as you get older because you wouldnt put up with a lot of things from friends or a partner that you put up with when its your family. Its tricky but I really appreciate your perspective. Thanks for sharing this.

I have the same EXACT qualms with my own parents! My dad is notoriously indecisive and scatterbrained and my mom worries all the time too. I graduated college a year ago and live at home again and somedays I still feel like I'm the same teenager that would pick fights with them. Watching this I realize that it's definitely more up to me how I handle and react to the things they say or do that bother me. Having Asian parents and being a second-generation kid is like a 2 for 1 deal some days lol but this really opened my eyes to how I can be more kind and work on my behavior. Thank you, Jenn!

This video resonates so much with me. It's how we respond to how we think our parents are pushing our buttons that is the issue. I do understand your mom's fear. I grew up that way as well as my mother was a very fearful person. I felt like that limited some of the risks that I took or the path I chose. In hindsight I regret letting the fear rule me. I found that reversing roles where I was the parent changed my perspective and allowed me to understand where they were coming from. In today's world, unfortunately, fear is prevalent. The thought that guided me the most in terms of patience with my parents was thinking how my life would be without them. That made me sad. It also rid me of a lot of crap that I was holding on to.

omg this is all so relatable. The parents, the not wanting to get rid of clothes you'll never wear... all of it lol I just did a huge clean out of my closet and had my golden rule be, if I can't remember the last time I wore it, it's out. In the past, I would come up with every scenario in which I MIGHT wear that outfit only to have it sit in my closet for another year or more. Not giving it a thought beyond my golden rule this time around was amazing!! I now have room to grow my wardrobe with things that are actually my current style. And as far as parents go, I have been feeling that frustration more and more lately, but keep reminding myself that they are doing their best based on their own knowledge/how they were brought up. And that like you said, they mean well and want only the best for their kids ❤️

Hey Jenn - I was like LOL when I saw the caption '2nd generation responsibilities'. Family is everything, including chosen family. Our relationship with our parents is certainly an interesting and ever evolving one. Humanising our parents is crucial. It isn't about excuses, condoning or justifying wrongdoings but by humanising our parents we can have a greater level of empathy, understanding and acceptance of who they are. They are also on their own paths and journey as an individual. Nurturing this relationship, growing with them, finding better ways to communicate is tough yet rewarding. It can be messy and complicated, it may not be exactly how you want it to be now or ever, it can hurt, but it can also be the total opposite. Releasing ourselves and them from expectations is important. And sometimes you just need to take it one day at a time 💕 . The struggle when decluttering is real! Lovely vlog as always, stay safe and well x 💖👑

i'm so happy to see how far along your relationships with your parents have come. i remember watching you still at uc davis and you never really spoke to them or about them. and at the time you were just being eclectic and trying to live your life and most parents always have something to say. but it's nice to see how peaceful and matured you've become and that your lifestyle aligns with your family now. time really heals so much and makes you realize so many things. back then i'd fight with my parents too but now i think about how that time would be better spent genuinely enjoying eachother's company while we're still alive. once you get to that point it's so enlightening

I loved the power of now by the same author. With my parents, I know everything they say comes from love and concern. So, just practicing empathy and not focusing on ego really helps you gain patience in those situations. Esp when parents are far and you don’t see them often, they feel helpless and want to ensure your safety and success so they bombard you with a lot of info and advice at once. I agree with what you said- relationships evolve.

This whole video is me like 5 years ago, this is feels like a snapshot of my life I feel like I’m watching my old self 😂 I finally made peace with my parents and now it’s so clear to me that every negative word they say is a peak into their inner world, they grew up poor and without opportunity so of course they feel like things I try to accomplish are too good to be true and they are trying to protect me from the heartbreak they endured. Also, I used to LOVE fashion but finally I realized I was buying frivolously and it was a coping mechanism. I purged my closet and now I don’t buy anything unless I need it, and if I wanna spend on something I don’t need I spend time to think about it and try to donate or recycle something to balance it out. I’m definitely a minimalist now and I am more motivated to be environmentally friendly and not purchase fast fashion. Oh also I don’t wear ANYTHING uncomfortable no matter how cute it is lol it’s not worth it! You’ll never want to wear it and you’ll never truly feel good in it. Only buy shit that you truly love. You might enjoy moving more in that direction, Jen! I know I feel more at peace

I love how vulnerable and relatable you are 🥺🥺 it’s so easy to think that your life is perfect and you have a perfect relationship with your parents and compare it to my own; but hearing your stories and knowing that your parents trigger you too HAHAHAH makes me feel so happy and warm inside....thank you for being so real!

This is so so silly but I was honestly brought to tears. While completely different people I've had a similar experience with my family. Really an experience that's still occurring. I don't want to give up on my family but I honestly want peace. Idk I'm just so happy for you, you've become so insightful, gentle and refined and i just am so proud.

Thank you for the beautiful insight you gave on learning to be patient with your parents. I am 24 years old but feel like I am at the peak of the "snappy" stage and constantly snap at them for any little question they have. I guess I am at that age where I just crave my own space (I still live at home), but it's not their fault, and I know they genuinely don't know how to do certain things and need to ask us kids. I hope my relationship with them gets better just likes yours have with your parents.

Having patience with people, especially your parents, is so difficult because it's hard to distinguish between what you should and shouldn't put up with because our society is so hell-bent on having this vision of a perfect family and making people believe you need to stay around your parents (or kids or siblings) simply because they're you're family. To anyone reading this, you are never obligated to love your parents, to want to be around them, or even "fix them" or adapt to them (because you shouldn't be "fixing" anyone, that's up to that person~ helping is a bit different but that's a whole other convo). I feel a good way to understand is to treat your family like you would your friends; you leave and distance if they're toxic, but know your boundaries about whether or not you have the energy and health to stay because you've grown to love and care for them. Lastly, remember to check yourself because you're not perfect and that's okay, but it doesn't mean you can't make change for the better :)) that was long but I'm wishing y'all the best ~~

wow! this is so aligned! i am seeking our counseling because all of the triggers my parents set off in me, but just today i realized that his coffee cup in the mug doesn’t mean i have to be triggered, it’s just a cup!! i put meaning and resentment behind actions he doesn’t even think about. it’s my choice to be set off by it, but your first lesson was so on the nose!!! Not biting the bite and becoming set off by triggers that I created!

First of all, totally agree with what you said about your parents and your relationship with them. I came to that realization when I moved out and that mindset totally helps when taking anything overwhelming or negative from them. Second of all, you and Ben are so funny. I’m always genuinely cackling when there’s a Ben bit in a video. Loved the vlog!!

I really related to when you were talking about your parents just wanting the best for you, and you needing patience through all that. I am a daughter of an Asian immigrant family in the US and you perfectly described my past relationship with my parents and where I want to end up (where you are with yours). Going to practice patience. Thank you so much, I am always learning from you ❤️

Honestly, love listening and watching things jenn introduces ans talks about.. and have been watching for years. But this is the best video yet. Love the take on how we can control our response to our parents, to not literally bite the bait. I don't know why but we always do, but I guess it comes from wanting to really changing the dynamics of the family at home. Been really loving the content, jenn! Keep it up! :)) 👍😌

Literally can relate to everything that you said about your parents....the generational responsibilities portion is so relatable as a 1st Gen. I moved cross country for 3 years and I can say that the distance really helped them and I miss each other. When I moved back to my home state we finally were at a peaceful and adult place in our relationship. It is so enlightening to at this point in our relationship. I feel so much closer to them. ❤

ugh I relate so much to this. eventually i got so tired of biting the bait and stressing out, that i made a choice to practice non reaction to triggers and try to see my parents as people with their own trauma projection. try to be empathetic. i can't change them, but i can change me.

I can’t agree with you more. I’ve also been trying to be more patient with my parents. I think a part of it is also bc we know that no matter what we do or say, parents are the one person that will keep loving you. So we tend to feel more comfortable giving them attitude.

i can totally relate with the parents bit and appreciate that insight. i used to have a very close relationship with my mom but as i grow older, i feel this widening gap between us. perhaps it's because i'm slowly turning into my own person and the differences are starting to get in the way. honestly Jenn, your vlogs are my favorite types of videos because they're so therapeutic and enlightening. always gives me a "eureka" moment haha

I appreciate the first part about your dynamics with your parents. My mum and I just ended a cold war last week. I am 27 and this still happens lol!! I am Asian too and it is very difficult expressing love since we dont do it openly. My mum defo shows her love by cutting fruits and making food for me too. Thanks for the reminder and I'm determined to make a change :)

Hey Jenn, I really appreciate how you opened up about your relationship with your parents in this video. I don't know if you've talked about it before, but I was under the impression that you had a really great relationship with your parents. Not to say that you don't, but it was very interesting to hear that you butt heads and that even now, it can be frustrating spending time with them. I feel the same about my parents. I love them but I always end up feeling angry, sad, and just bad vibes in general when I'm with them. I also used to butt heads with them a TON when I was younger. Our relationship is better now but they still get on my nerves lol. I agree with what you said that ultimately, they just care about you and want what's best for you! And that it definitely takes patience to see that sometimes lol
