Loved finding this online today. Watched this episode when I was 15 and have loved Mr Venturi ever since. What a legend. The game misses these type of characters

This is the best Feherty episode I've seen. Old school class champion & gentleman.

I love that 'You're as great a friend as I've ever had' in the end. It's so so much more meaningful than the usually used 'You're one of the best friends I've ever had', which people often think means the same. It doesn't.

What's the difference?

@@ironsideeve2955 Hi, the first one means there's never been anyone better, so you're top or equal top. The second means (or certainly implies) that you're somewhere near the top, but not of course the top or equal top one. You're in the top 10 or maybe 100 though

Saw him play in his prime, and then afterward. His 1964 Open win proved that anything in life is possible, no matter how low you fall. Wonderful story!

"Don't give the hole away, Jim." Ken Venturi was such a great golf announcer, but no matter how much break a crucial putt contained, he would say to keep it inside the hole. Classic! Rest in Peace.

I used to play in a charity event Ken hosted every June. Before we teed off, Ken would hold a short shotmaking clinic. His control of a golf ball was unbelievable. One year, he brought Curt Byram with him. As we stood around the practice green, Ken put a ball down on the fringe and asked Byram to hit a certain shot down an open fairway. Byram took a tiny divot. Ken wasn’t happy. It was the fringe after all. He looked sharply at Byram and said, “Don’t you know how to pick it clean?” Venturi wasn’t just a golfer, he was an artist.

what a window into the american culture of that era... what I notice about that generation is a common thread that runs thru is so many of them came up out of very humble & adverse backgrounds. also you were allowed to be an individual then.... those 2 commonalities wove together an americana that made the era unique even w/ all its wart. its why they seemed to love the country so much more then current generation do in general.... venturi was in a unique spot to ride that convergence is whole life.

Feeling a little grumpy at the moment. CBS would probably pull the plug on Venturi to put some younger blood into the telecast.

The story Venturi tells about Mark O’Meara’s winning putt on the 72nd hole of the 1998 Masters (which he also tells in his book, “Getting Up & Down”) is inaccurate. If you watch the tape of that telecast, Venturi did not quote Henry Longhurst prior to O’Meara’s putt. Ken is confusing O’Meara’s winning putt in 1998 with Sandy Lyle’s winning putt on the 72nd hole of the 1988 Masters. If you watch that tape, you’ll see that this was where Ken quoted Longhurst. Right story; wrong year.

Wish I’d never read golf instruction, just viewing the older players jaw'in you can get inside their head a bit and get few things to add to a better game/person. D Feherty was/still a fine player. More of these talented interviews will entertain/teach/entrance us. Never met an Irishman I didn’t like

used to caddy for venturi when he would play at his home club.occasionally when no one else wanted to. he either wouldnt speak at all or he talk to you like a dog. huge ego. he would hit a good shot and wouldnt move until everybody including me would fall all over telling him how great he was.you worked your ass off for him and sometimes he wouls stiff you. the other players would insist he pay his caddie. if he won the bets he wanted paid on the last green. if he lost you would have to run him down in the parking lot. he would not play with anyone who beat him for a long time. a real class act. other than that he was a nice guy

Easy to speak irreverently about man when he is gone and can't defend himself. Classless, and shameful. In Venturi I saw a man who rose above his circumstances and brought dignity to the game. He may be gone but his name on the USGA trophy will be there in perpetuity. RIP Mr Venturi.
