It was surreal to be in front of the stage listening when Fela rendered this masterpiece! Goood gracious, .....the vibes, the gyration, ...the baseline and to hear the thumping timbre of the infamous long drum?? Oooh... what a glorious performance! I floated in absolute euphoria! This recording doesn't do justice to the finer details and power of this song. This is one of his great masterpieces. Like great wines and as was his style, ...it was aged and matured through many years of performance and tweaking in the Shrine. Fela was a towering giant and a rare genius! Sadly, this song was never released into an album...... it is still aging gracefully in the cellar of his musical repertoire!

I can never forget this day Lekki Sunsplash 1988. The traffic leaving Lekki after the concert was so terrible. That day I thought my cousin who we went to the concert together had drowned. We could not find him anywhere and his clothes were in a bag I had with me and all he had on was swimming trunks. He eventually came home later having walked from Lekki Beach to Pedro police station, the police brought him home to Gbagada early in thr morning. He got lost while trying to wait and chat with Fela's pretty daughter Sola after the show and missed our arranged ride back home. Fela performing BBC at Lekki Sunsplash 88, enjoy the MUSIC ..

You will disconnect from the intensity when it is time. I watched his documentaries 'Music is the Weapon' and 'Finding Fela'; they helped give me insight to his music. Also, listen to Femi & Seun Kuti's albums. Their compositions are shorter, but pack as much truth and lyrical consciousness.

Oh my! Exactly what's happening to me right now! So scary ...my is ongoing for more than three months now. I've download a 2hour deejay mix and another 77m mix of about 3 lps just to save some KZbin data but I still come to search for new tunes which keep coming up anytime I type 'fela kuti'. I used to play burna and a bit Tupac and a bit a contemporary afrobeats....all now sound one dimensional, soleless and shallow art ... Please I'd like to know how you overcame your addition. Fela is a force!

Those were the days. I just graduated from University, Youthful energy bursting from all pores in my body and I was certainly among the teeming crowd in the picture at Lekki Sunsplash. Oh my God it was something else. The traffic hold up back home was legendary. We got home 7 hours later in a journey that should have taken 30 minutes at most because everyone was at the beach. To make matters worse the car yours truly took to the beach could only move in reverse. It was the only gear the car would accept. I WAS THERE!!!! Baba 70 4 ever.

Not really that bad. There was just one substantive turn left roughly 1 kilometer from the beach and the rest was in one straight line on what we call express road interspersed with one short bridge at VI and two long bridges Eko bridge to the mainland 10 -15 kilometeres away. But when you are barely 20 that's just part of the fun :)

1988? is this TBS (Tafawa Balewa Square)?. I remember watching a spectacular show that year billed as "Sunsplash" organized by Chief Bimbola Aboderin. It featured a number of front line reggae stars including "Yellowman", and top Nigerian musicians including Sunny Ade with Fela being the ultimate headline playing at about dawn (6:30am). The show finally wrapped up at about 8:00am having started before midnight! Probably the greatest show I've seen anywhere!

Does anyone know who is drumming on this track? Is it Tony Allen?
@ayetoromusic10 жыл бұрын
if it was the 88 TBS concert it was Mambo. A Cameroonian drummer.
