I was very fortunate to have lived in Nigeria at the time when Fela was recording this tune at the Shrine in Ikeja Lagos. Needless to say that I was there at the Shrine to hear this music played live time and time again as a teenager. It was a great stroke of good fortune that my house was less than 20 minutes away from the Shrine. Let's just say I really miss this guy and I remain humbled and very grateful to have seen Fela and hear him play the best music in the world live.

I was privileged to be a regular attendee at the Shrine when this tune and other gems were being rehearsed and played. If you listen carefully, you will hear the melancholy within the mirth. At this time, the great man was beginning to succumb to discouragement at the enormity of freeing the African mind from the legacies of foreign colonialism.

To cast Fela as merely a musician is to diminish his stature and prestige. This man was an institution all by himself. This is the most profoundly saddest number that he ever put out there. This number here sobers you up. I think this is where he bade us a final goodbye having done all he could, with no results. From here, this undisguised lamentation, Fela, began the process of his ancestral transformation. Ashukutu!!! Deep into the bowels of the African spiritual. Baba is still here, a living deity of truth and resistance. He will never die.

Fela's music has a wealth of richness to it that no other has. His ability to use instruments to capture genuine human emotions ones that we cannot comprehend as well as nature itself has been done by no other. His level is genius, everything is intentional from the way his singers sing in an apologetically african way to the freestyle playing of the instruments, if I had not embarked upon his music my life would have been missing a void.

Baba 70...don do I'm own. Now the game must change! Some of us knew Baba from way back, when he became political...He wasn't always. It was transitional. Initially he thought he could engage the Politicians in healthy dialogue, only to realize that most of them were mediocre not interested in a positive Africa. they were selfish and only thought about material things. So what has changed. Fela sensitized us to make a change...The change is not going to happen with us complaining...the crooks are entrenched. The change comes with smart innovation, Technology, strategy and application. Some folks are working on it. If Baba was alive now, he wont be yabbing in his music anymore, he was already leaning towards a melancholy. Remember, some of these leaders were once his friends...Obasanjo was his junior in the same high school in Abeokuta. Baba would probably be playing calm spiritual music now, just like "Look and laugh" and "Beast of no Nation" albeit still scathing. The message Baba preached was positive change in the world from an African perspective. The lesson: Enlightened action beyond government.

Agree with you there, it feels like he's just speaking directly to the listener in the most sincere tone. The man had seen enough by the time he wrote this song.
