I thought the 1927 Felix The Cat was a regular balloon and because they had no way to release the gas from the balloon after the parade they let it float away until it went high enough to burst

Actually in the very early days, they let the balloons go and float off and land wherever. Then if someone found it and brought it back to Macy's, they would get rewards.
