The obsession with super steels has to stop. It is great the tech is there and hopefully it will be more affordable some day, but the truth is, good traditional steels do the job just fine and you only get diminishing returns at this point. Our ancestors who would really depend on their knives to survive on daily basis would get by with much more irregular steel quality in their blades than we would deem acceptable today. At the end of the day, your 20 buck Mora will do any job just fine and you won't mind if it gets banged up.

Just a little suggestion for those who are impatient - you can "dry" greenwood faster in the microwave. It's best done when you significant other isn't home, because if you go too far, its stinky. Use low heat and pause frequently (e.g. heat it up, then just let it sit a few minutes before continuing). You're basically boiling the water impregnated in the wood so it steams off. It's also not without risk - your piece may crack, especially if there are areas of varying thickness. I use this sometimes when turning wood on the lathe. In those cases I rough turn the shape, then microwave it before turning down to my final diameter. Since these bushcraft projects tend to be thicker, I think it should work ok if you're careful.

You're doing great, a great teacher. Lost, skills, art, craftsmanship, I love seeing other's who know how to survive, because being alone isent a bad thing... As a matter of fact.. Everyone should be encouraged, to get to know yourself.. to have confidence, in the great outdoors Depend on yourself, not other's, not money and in a few short months of summer, be ready for winter. A friend of mine once told me, you're the only person I know, who can be forgotten about, dropped in the forest, and when I come back in 15 months... You have a small 2 story home, table chairs, bed, shower.. MABY a pool.. Eating and living well. God bless you all, in the name of Jesus...

I spent 25 years hand carving wooden spoons and kitchen goods for a living. I always carved green wood then dried it gently in a simple light bulb kiln. This was just a basic wooden plywood box with a top lined with foil insulation - wire rack at the top of the box - 4 standard shop light bulbs. If I wanted to slow the process I could unscrew one or two bulbs - moisture escaped through the gaps around the lid. It was a very basic setup but worked perfectly. You could tell when the wood was dry by the feel - warmth coming from the wood and by the sound when you knocked two pieces gently together.

@@CaptainPupu It also melts off if you try boiling stuff with it, but with some weird trick it might actually work. I have several styles of Victorinox pocket knives. Fisherman, and the one you show here, are my two favorites, and I always keep one or the other in my pocket. 3:57 I would have used saw to cut several times toward what I want thickness of cup to be. Then used blade like chisel, down tree rings. Much quicker with locking blade that way.

Если ты будешь сушить у печки то она сразу треснет сушить надо постепенно у холодном проветриваемом месте куда не попадает солнечный свет и со временем постепенно убирать в более теплые помещения но главное не перестарайся

Pretty cool project Felix however since you’ve done it already I guess I won’t 🤣🤣 by the way, that knife is not the camper model, it has a hook. What model is it? I’m getting a camper for Christmas. Do I need to trade it in?😁 Great video. Thank you

We enjoyed that a lot during diner;) Interesting technique with the shrinking, but wouldn't the cup be prone to spiting when drying?

Not really it could form cracks but as long as you keep the bark I doubt it would

Normally, logs split because they dry unevenly. A cup like this exposes the wood to air more evenly than a cut log does, so it tends to shrink more uniformly.

Wenn ich Dich nicht schon abonniert hätte, ich würde glatt wieder tun. Wie wäre es mal mit einem Vogelfutterhaus, nur mit dem SAK geschnitzt?

Okay, you won my subscription. Could always saw the wood in half down the length and re-seal with pine sap if you're doing this out in the woods or something and bind it together to make the job easier, maybe tie it together with some twine while it dries. This would let you use the saw on the inside instead of gouging for ages. Out of sheer effort and the look of it as one whole piece, thumbs up!
