I have to admit, that clearcutting is the most effective method in terms of cost and capacity, but the damage especially to the soil is serious. The weight of the feller, the tracks and the steep terrain, i think the next rain will wash away the fertile topsoil, the sun dry it rapidly out and cold air reach young trees in winter, do more harm to them. Here in the federal state of Brandenburg in Germany, the eviromental laws limiting clearcuttings only to 0.5 hektar. My daily workroutine for the most time is thinning. We repeat it all 7 to 10 year, harvest part of the wood each time. And we processing the trees on the spot, leaving all the branches etc. there, because this biomass is an fertiliser for free. But still an impressive maschine, handling heavy trees like a match.
