Ti's Hot Mess History

Күн бұрын

This is a story about a woman who pretended to be the illegitimate daughter of one of the richest men on the planet, and because people bought into her lies…she was able to dupe a number of men into giving her MILLIONS of dollars. Before it was all over, her illegal shenanigans would bring her in contact with the richest man in the world and a United States president. I’ll explain.
She’s the inspiration of the Maud Beaton character on The Gilded Age. The men who gave her money in real life called her Cassie L. Chadwick. Once they realized she stole their money, they probably called her a whole lotta other things that I can’t say here. She was a flaming hot mess.
It’s another Hot Mess History scandal from Ti. Your source for the hottest scandals from 1870 - 1940. Whether you are looking for scandals from The Gilded Age, The Titanic, or The Great Depression…you can find them on this channel.
Enjoy!

I thought the same thing as I was watching Gilded Age! Very Anna Delvy-ish. Everyone in the right circles knew her, so no one asked questions. And an extra plus that Cassie had was that no one would DARE ask a “gentleman” to confirm he had an illegitimate daughter.

Great story. I give the Gilded Age credit for finding ways to weave in the stories of characters based on real life individuals. And this video history fills in wonderful details that the streaming series does not get into. And even though he was considered to be one of the chief Robber Barons of the era, it was noteworthy that Andrew Carnegie tried to help some of those who had been swindled by this woman. She was certainly a top tier criminal.

@@commonsense246 There are political cartoons from the period which include Carnegie with fellow Robber Barons JP Morgan and John Rockefeller. There is another political cartoon showing an old "Andy Carnegie" shouting "Down with the Rich!" to a group of plutocrats, including Morgan, Harriman and Rockefeller. Carnegie crushed his workers while building up his businesses and then gave away almost all of his wealth because he sincerely believed that no one should die holding onto extreme wealth. He was a complicated man.

@TisHotMessHistory I feel being a content creator takes a lot of dedication, and I appreciate you for creating content on the producers version of Maud Beaton because I love history especially this type of history very much. I love drama shows that when it comes to black American characters it’s in a positive light. Showing That Black American History isn’t always dark even though black Americans went through some atrocities before the civil war and after, but we also have history that demonstrates how we took lemons and made exquisite lemonade 🙌🏾 I love the relationship Peggy has with the Van Rhijn and Brooks family, her mother and father are educated hard working ppl that inspirational in today’s world where most black Tv is very low vibration. I love the Gilded Age because it’s educational and High vibration. That why your KZbin channel will prosper beyond measure because of your high vibrational content bravo 👸🏾 I sincerely wish you all the best in your endeavors Happy Christmas 🎄 and GOD Bless 🙏🏾 !!!!

What a hot mess Cassie Chadwick was! Thanks for the deep dive into the real-life inspiration for the Maud Beaton character. With regard to Cassie’s con, it is astounding that the doctor’s elite circle did not use their social network to vet her. It’s even more remarkable that her prolific & monumental theft was aided by the ridiculous morés of the time: it was de rigueuer to whisper about a tycoon’s love child but it was improper to question said love child’s background. I’m torn on whether The Gilded Age should follow up the Maud storyline & get justice for Oscar. I feel that justice has been dealt to him - I’m glad that his mother’s household was vindicated. Oscar was actively scheming to trick a naive, hapless heiress to marry him so he could live off of her money AND still have a boyfriend on the side. That is a heinous thing to do. At least his former lover is determined to live honestly, e.g. be out & proud as much as he dared.

This story has so many connections to Ohio. Im from Cleveland ohio. We have a main street named "Carnegie avenue" name l assume named after Andrew Carnegie. There were many philanthropists from ohio that donated to Ohio liberal arts colleges and HBCUs. The fact that Carnegie paid for philanthropist Beckwith debt that helped Oberlin that accepted black students in that is in ohio is an amazing thing. There are Beckwiths in Cleveland Ohio too. I love history lol

This is definitely an Ohio story! Oddly, the day after I finished editing this video, I was watching a predator catcher video. The scene was downtown somewhere. The guys in the video were standing in front of a restaurant door, and I could see a Euclid Ave address. Immediately I thought of Dr. Chadwick's Euclid Avenue mansion and wondered if they were in Ohio. Near the end of the video, they said that they were in Cleveland. I'm with you. I love history too!

@@TisHotMessHistory very true Euclid Ave was once millionaires row. Some of those mansions still exist.

Interesting @@beautifulsoultress3078. Knowing that Dr. Chadwick's mansion was there, I figured that something like that would be the case - having a number of mansions on the same street.

Subscribed today. I saw a story on this thieving cow a while back. I thought it was funny when Carnegie said, "All of this could have been avoided if someone had just asked him." I get this wasn't the texting age, but for that amount of money, somebody needs to reach out and get a hold of somebody. "Cassie" certainly proves charisma is not just about physical looks. I don't know what went down with that poor little banker to mess him up SO badly, but Cassie should have been a Disney Villain or something.

FDIC or not, scamming a bank (account) is not a victimless crime. After spending months in the hospital a caregiver stole thousands of dollars from me. I did get a portion back from the bank. They got probation and they are ordered to repay the remaining amount to me, a few dollars at a time

I know it doesn’t do good to speculate but I have a couple of thoughts 1. Historians believe Cleopatra wasn’t necessarily an over the top beauty for her era either but it was her charm, charisma, and brains that made her successful, I see a bit of a parallel here 2. I can’t help but wonder is she’d been born into the exact same circumstances but as a male and all the privilege that came just with being born a man would she have turned to crime? She seems like she’s got the kind of acumen that did well for people of this era. Some people are just drawn to crime and always needing more and more in whatever way seems easiest but I can’t help but wonder if she’d been a man could she have maybe built herself up the way the Astors did or the Russels in the show? Let’s be honest, the richest of the rich weren’t probably the most innocent either and she seems like she’d potentially make a great robber baron. 3. If she’d been born a higher class woman from the start I wonder again if she would have been successful within the limitations of being an upper crust woman paired with a business savvy man. Again a Mrs. Russel type from the show or the real life first Mrs. Astor who basically helped her husband build his business up from the ground. Obviously within the marriages she does have we see she’s selfish with her stolen wealth but I wonder if that came from being born lower class? The marriages seemed like a means to an end instead of a true partnership. If she’d been born wealthy and given opportunity could she have flourished within those circles with the natural acumen she has? Again, it doesn’t really bear to speculate, it’s in the past, but it’s interesting for me to think about using historical parallels and the show. I know she’s a criminal, she deserved to be stopped and pay a price, but you kind of have to applaud the gumption and just pure audacity it took to do things like this for years. I can’t say I feel overly bad for the über wealthy she directly targeted, she basically played them at their own game, but the more average person who had money in a bank she bankrupted I do feel for.
