It's known as the Punishment Parade, also the Dismount Parade, which started in 1894 when Queen Victoria found the entire guard drinking and gambling while on duty and as a punishment, ordered that they had to be inspected every day at 4pm by an officer for the next 100 years! When that period was up Queen Elizabeth II decreed that the parade should continue as a tradition.
The Dismount Parade which takes place daily on the courtyard in front of Horse Guards when the mounted sentries who have been guarding the official entrance to Buckingham Palace are relieved by dismounted sentries.
Also known as 'The Four 'O' Clock Parade' and 'Punishment Parade' it takes place at 16:00 daily when following an inspection by an Officer the mounted guards dismount, then take their horses back to the stables for the night.
Two dismounted sentries will then guard the entrance until 20:00 when the gates to Horse Guards are closed and then one sentry will remain on duty until 07:00 when the gates re-open.

@@PH_1964 Corporal of Horse, cavalry equivalent of Sergeant, is the NCO in charge of the dismounted trooper's lineup. Whether intentional or not, his inflection and timing of the commands completely wrongfooted the No.2 trooper; who stepped off to 'dress' way too early. Anticipating a command on the parade ground is a no-no, like jumping a red light. Sorry, I'm showing my age, but drill sergeants traditionally rebuked this with a stern "Wait for it, WAIT FOR IT!" Just out of interest. The armed Police that you see in the courtyard, are not from the London Metropolitan Police. They are from the highly trained Ministry of Defence Police Force, which is a national Police Force, operating throughout the U.K. Not to be confused with the Military Police, which each branch of the Armed Services, Army, Navy and Airforce have. Nor with the Nuclear Constabulary, which guard all Nuclear Power Stations throughout the U.K.

Of course women do not March like men - it is a matter of anatomy. You should ask if they are capable of performing an officer’s duties, which they are, as evidenced. My personal observations are that women treat combat more seriously than men - for them it is not a game, but rather defense of hearth and home. In my day, women were allowed in the U.S. Army (I am 77). If I want to know how women can tolerate military service, I need only ask the other Lieutenant Colonel in the house.

@@ffotograffydd What has your comment to do with mine? The anatomical differences are real. The female pelvis is relatively wider than that of a male, and muscle mass differences show up in marching gaits. As for females being able to outperform males, that much depends on the nature of the contest. Where physical brawn is not a factor, females are equal to males in intelligence and dexterity. My wife (that other Lieutenant Colonel in the house) rued the day the Womens Army Corps was integrated into the regular Army, for that meant the entrance standards for women would be lowered, and their higher standards were a point of pride. By the centre same thing the whole line dresses from the centre man/woman, which foot first doesn't come into it because it's always left foot first they don't need to be told

Just being curious, the female officer has a gold band on visor. I thought only officers of Major rank or above will have that on the cap? This is a Lieutenant with 2 PIPs on shoulder.

She has two stars not pips. Officers of the Household Cavalry all have gold on their visors.

It’s also called the 4 o’clock parade. In 1894, Queen Victoria found her guards drinking and gambling and as punishment she ordered that they be paraded at 4pm every day for the next 100 years. Queen Elizabeth II decided to continue it as tradition

No Campaign Medals! Lots of people join these units to learn to ride. 3 years and they are out.

It is a punishment parade, its not a punishment as in someone being whipped, the turning out at 4pm everyday for inspection is the punishment.

@tacfoley the original poster was confusing a normal punishment parade that takes place after work with a historic tradition only carried out by The Household Cavalry or any unit carrying out their duties.
