Hi, thanks for posting all your great informative videos! I just purchased the protos arborist helmet. I had a petzel alveo helmet, it was about 6 years old. I got hit in the head with the top of a hemlock & broke that helmet. I had been pondering with the idea of buying the protos for a while. When I broke my petzel I knew the time was right to pull the trigger on buying the protos. It has surpassed all my expectations! Well worth the cost, especially when you add up the cost of what another helmet costs and adding all the accessories to make it a functional piece of head gear. In my opinion the protos is the best tree climbing/ground helmet you can buy👍🏼

Great to have a women’s helmet perspective/thoughts. My daughter and I have been thinking of moving her from a Kask into a new one. She has a smaller head (maybe similar, to you, as you mentioned) and lots of hair.... she is still learning to climb, therefore doing more groundwork - thanks for your insight. stay safe and kind regards

Used to wear a cheap helmet and a Stihl helmet in the past for years. For three years now I am going with a Protos helmet - this is just a superior choice for me. The quick release is great. The tucked in earprotectors don't hang up in brushes. The chin strap is operable with gloves on. The glasses are awesome. The crash absober gives additional security.

Protos is the best helmet I’ve ever worn. The ear defenders are not great for big chippers/saws though. Husky one is a solid choice for ground work and climbing. Fitting sena comms to the protos soon for better comms with friends/safer work site and music. Cheers for the run down. Alex

My helmet is coming up for renewal, not because it’s worn or bashed but for insurance, I’ve got to wear a helmet within date. I’ve always viewed the ‘Protos’ as being a needless extra expense. As I’ve not had a problem with previous Husky helmets, though my present helmet is Stihl. The thing that really bugs me with the Stihl helmets, is you can’t clip down the ear defenders with one hand, as you can with Husky. You can unclip off the ear with one hand but not clip them back in place. Also recently, I’ve had three cases where the visor has hooked a low branch and the visor partially detached; and two instances of the ear defender wires catching on branches, resulting in a sudden & startlingly loud environment. Never had either happen with Husky helmet So why did you buy a Stihl lid, well I didn’t. A charity I volunteer with bought me a lid but they only buy Stihl PPE. Very kind of them but I think I’ll decline if they offer again. So I was going back to Husky but they’ve changed the ear defender clips and I gather the things ping off all too easily. Ok, back to Protos. The visor catching on low branches, (which can’t be removed on specimen trees as specified by the charity or trust that I also volunteer with) is a little tiresome and the occasional bouts of short-lived extra noise I can live with. The reason I’m now considering Protos as my next lid, is an accident I recently had. I’d been called from the cutting area to have a welcoming cuppa, (charities keep volunteers fed and full of tea). Transport over adjacent canal via working narrowboat. I get onto the wooden load ramp ok, step off onto the steel deck which was a bit muddy and whoosh. I go down like a sack of spuds, (potatoes). As I’m falling backwards, my helmet falls off. Thankfully my saw is ok, not so the saw of another volunteer. My sliding feet pushes his saw into the canal and a couple of feet of gloopy mud. They eventually managed to retrieve it and after a full strip+clean his saw is good. Not so my head & neck - minor whiplash and fractured skull as my head smacks on the steel deck. My neck clicks a bit, which is slightly irritating and the skull… nothing to worry about, just another on my list of serious head injuries, (I’ve had a few over the years). So a lid which stayed on, might not have protected my from the whiplash but would have saved my skull. So, a visor which is less likely to hook a branch or three, ear defenders that stay in place and crucially a lid will probably still be on my noggin if I fall again. I’m thinking the extra cost is worth it.

It is a great helmet but the earmuffs come out of ‘track’ too easily I find.... dont know if thats down to me when fitting the comms units. i would say that is the only poor bit of the design. I have a Cardo Packtalk Bold comms unit in mine and groundie lid and now im glad I didnt buy the straight swap comms units ( cos theyre a big ticket item too) if they dont tuck into the lid space, that might annoy me especially since youre wearing the Rolls Royce ( showing my age there) of lids. Maybe they will come up with a slimmer comms unit on the next gen lid , who knows....

I was bummed about that also, but later on she mentioned that they were aftermarket Peltor because of the company that she worked for. She also mentioned that the factory Protos Peltor uses the same muff that is no thicker, allowing it to slide back. I noticed from pics on the Protos site that the mic is directly attached to the right muff. Making me wonder if it pushes a closely adjusted mic into your face when pushing the muffs back.
