Old magazines are definitely a problem for me. I got at least 200 perfectly lined up on my shelf, by edition and year. It looks really pretty but I never flip through them. I've decided to use a few for some art projects and the rest I'll be giving away to my friends. once every 6 months we host with a group of 10-15 friends an clothing exchange party. Everyone can bring clothes, make up, jewellery, bags, books or magazines they don't like anymore and we give them to who wants to have it. Everything that hasn't been chosen will be donated. It's so much fun.

I could relate to what you said especially about those moments when things somehow pile up again: it happened at the beginning of my journey and I felt so guilty about it at first. I totally get you. But since we have great public library system in Finland I'm slowly starting to get rid of many of my books, or that's my intention anyway, because i can always borrow them from library. If there are some parts or sentences that i really like in a borrowed book and would like to remember them later, I scan those pages and store on my computer. And make note of the book and the writer.

As an interior designer, I became a pack rat. I am currently getting rid of 90% of what I own...bins and bins, garage sales later, I was left asking myself these exact words: "how do I get rid of all these books I love?" Then I repeatedly listened to the minimalists podcasts & watched their documentary, and BOOM...that was the support I needed. I realized that anytime I want/need to read a book, a friend may have it, or the library most likely does. In addition, I have also capitalized on my decision & made about $35 selling half my books in two weeks. This journey is necessary for America. Best of luck with your books, and keep sharing your great videos :) Stay humble and beautiful!

As a mom, I think the hardest thing for me has been getting rid of my son's old clothes and toys and books, especially clothes. But, at the same time, those can be the easiest thing to give to someone who needs them and/or wants them. I have very little sentimental attachment to my belongings, but it's harder to purge his items, even though he doesn't wear/play with/read them any more. Thank you for the positive messages! It is definitely a journey.

Such a helpful way to reassure yourself it's okay to get rid of things! I think I'm just emotionally attached to too many things or I think I can use them later. And if you think about it, that's kind of being selfish. If someone else needs it, wants it, could use it, or love it now, why let it clutter up my life and collect dust and (more than likely) never be used? Thanks for another great video, Victoria!

Thanks Victoria! I thoroughly enjoyed this video. In fact, while watching it I even started to get rid of things that I have been hording on my desk haha! This video was a real eye opener for me. But as you said, there are people out there that will be happy that you decided to get rid of them in the end! :) So with that being said, clothing is my ABSOLUTE weakness!

great vid i subscribed :-) also on my own 'minimalist mission' grew up in a family who loves old and interesting things and had a rly bad habit of 'rescuing' things that are bizarre or unusual (or somethings i could fix or upcycle)... i wanted to b minimalist for about 10yrs but i didnt think its possible for sum1 like me because i love interesting things too much haha but recently felt in such a rut i decided to clear away so many items - reducing all my belongings down - goal is to fit everything i own into an ammount i could carry (i dnt hav any furniture lol) as soon as i began to minimalise my life i felt like my life began to b easier and change for the better... i felt empowered and literally felt lighter as i lost the weight of all these 'things'... my life now is changing still for the better i hope - i have more focus and the rut feeling is gone! the fog of depression is lifting and i so desire to have only enough things so that i always know what i have and where it is..instead of having so many things that i cant even find what i need. ur halloween comment made me LOL thinking about the 'should i shouldnt i throw it out' moment i had recently with an actual skeleton bones top i had 4 yrs.....it went to the thrift store now hooray haha but yes it is not just u hehe! my main thing i find hard to give up is gifts! this year i will tell everyone not to give me anymore gifts because it is my weakness 100% im feeling bad about giving up a purple top my sis gave me but u made me feel better to think i never wore it but sum1 WILL love that top so tomorrow it will go to the thrift shop to find a loving home and appear in sum1 elses summer photos. thank u :-D

What helped me is that I kept in mind that yes, I want to have many full bookshelves in my life, but I'd rather have books that I'm in love with, right? And you know, we often keep the books we "want to read later", but we know we'll never read them ahaha

Concert t shirts and vinyl records are my hardest thing to get rid of. I always think "what if my future children will like these one day" or "what if I can't find this music anymore." The music I listen to now encapsulates my teen years and my favorite memories and it's hard for me to get rid of items associated with it if I know in the future it will play a roll in how I remember my favorite years and the stories I will get to tell surrounding them. I'm worried if I get rid of the items I will forget the memories. Ugh! Still pushing towards minimalism though!! I'm determined to live in a tiny house eventually...

My mom has physical and mental disabilities. Giftgiving is kind of her thing. When it comes to holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, any special occasion she's adamant about having a celebration with food and gifts. No matter how many times I've told her I really don't like knickknacks, cheap plastic based things, or non-functional items, she gives them to me all the time. I have a giant Glenda the good witch knickknack, vintage angel knickknacks, big plastic gaudy jewelry, a plastic spraying fan, and a ton of other stuff I can't seem to throw away that she's given me. I store all of her presents in my walk in closet and we jokingly refer to it as "the museum of mom." She's not in good health and I'm afraid if she ever passes away suddenly, the guilt of getting rid of her gifts would wash over and crush me. So that's my weakness, the museum of mom.

I thought my weakness would be books (I used to be quite a book hoarder) but I have found a way how to think about them. It is pretty much what you say in the end of the video - imagine how happy it would make someone else. I alway think about a book as a think that needs to be read and used to really have its value. If I know I will probably never read the book again it must go out to the world. To be read and to be alive.

It's tough with kids. Toys, clothes, shoes, and beds that get outgrown every season.

I think my problem is that when I give something away I want to make sure it goes to a good home so to speak. I know the person I gave it to will take good care of it I don't mind giving it because my mindset is it's too good for a thrift store

totally random but you look like Nikki Reed =p - I'm working on being more minimalist in my life and it's a challenge at times. I've never been the typical consumer so I know it could be worse, but the things I hold onto remind me of my family members that have passed. The other day I got rid of a door hanger that belonged to my great grandma (rip) and the lady really loved it and it was depressed but also relieving to get rid of it. I know my grandma would have wanted someone to have it who would love it, so I know she would have approved. My other issues is "but I spent money on it" xD this excuse is the worst. I've been selling odds and ends for like 5-10$ and it's helping me save money and get rid of junk!

I also think another issue is finding time and where to even start

Start in your closet, with your clothes. That usually gets the ball rolling. I have gone back through the process again since originally doing it, and I always start in my closet.

my mom won't let me buy anything from thrift stores because she's afraid of bed bugs.. any suggestions?

You could try buying from a clothing reselling app like poshmark, that way at least you can ask the owner of the item what condition it is in.

i have a specifically made t-shirt with an internal joke on it that a friend gave to me.... we're not really that good friends anymore, and this reminds me of a cool and humorous time in my life at the "peak" of our friendship. i don't really use it but the reasons why i keep it are 1. that i feel guilty 2. even though it's mostly funny between me and my friend, it can also be found funny by others and be a conversation starter in the future 3. how would it be beneficial to anyone else out there when they're not even a part of the joke. despite all this i haven't really used it around others then my friend, and since we don't really hang out anymore, i hardly use it. i always think that it would be a cool conversation topic, but when appropriate situations come up to actually wear it, i chicken out because maybe people think i'm silly. i just don't know what to do with it asgfgdfhh

+Ingrid M maybe u can wear it and take a selfie to remind urself and make a scrapbook page with some photos of u and ur old friends and a pic of the shirt?...this is how i reduced a hole box of photos down to be just 1 scrapbook/album and now everyone loves to look at that book...but noone ever saw the photos in the box b4 they wer in a mess and half of them wer out of focus or random pics i took as a kid with my thumb half in shot or ppl i dnt even know anymore from school lol but now i picked out only the nice 1s and made that book it brings me so much joy and when my friends/family saw it they felt joy too it is a fun minimalising project especially if u hav lots of pics u need to sort thru! good luck x

I'm a doll collector so... dolls, and art supplies. Do I really need that many stickers? No.... but I will use them! (I tell myself) sigh.
