We are starting a new project today. We are creating a new garden area near our log cabin. The garden area will be fenced in with raised beds around the inside perimeter of the garden and a earth garden in the middle. We plan on building compost bins and a tool shed also. We might end up adding some cold frames as well. But today we are just getting started and will setting our fence posts and building our first raised garden beds.

@@CountryViewAcres Should get you a post pounder attachment. Then you can just semi spike your logs and post and just pound them in with the tractor instead of having to dig and set them etc.

I agree with leaving the posts as tall as they are, then you could put rolled wire fencing or cattle panels for climbing plants. FYI your beds are all ready nicer than any thing I have lol 🐸

Instead of a bed, in the corner after the gate I'd put your 6x6 shed there. That way once you enter the gate from the house your tools are there and when you are done and walking to the house you can put them away. Just a thought. That said, you've probably already built that corner so...

I do plan on putting the shed in a corner. But it won't be next to the house. It will near the compost bins.

Nice garden! We built our house 4 years ago (also overlooking our pond) so you are just a few years behind us. Oddly the similarity doesn't stop there! Your garden is the size of ours too. We have about 20 raised beds plus an in ground garden area for corn, melons & such. We put our 4x4 tool shed right outside our garden - disguised as an old timey outhouse. On the back of the shed we installed on old cast iron sink with running water - to pre-wash garden haul, hands, etc.

i have 45 deer that visit twice a day 5 are hand feed,we all have a understanding,stay out of my gardens i feed you hahahah,but i keep them from jumping a 4ft fence with one trick,first off i have 10ft of wasted fence around my bottom garden,i watched a spooked doe clear it with ease when i was starting out,tip is,they can clear 12ft if they had to ,if spooked they dont watch what in front of them ,flight is all they know,trick is on the landing,they always look for a secure landing then jump,i have a container garden on top of the hill and the fence post are tpost in home depot bucket about 8in concrete in them,4 ft wire twist tied on poles,just to keep out,first year they would jump fence just standing there and leap thing,my containers are 18 gal totes,i moved the totes closer to the fence and havent had on jump fence in 4 yrs,if the landing isnt safe they wont try to get in,mainly because the have the book written on lazy lol

Consider putting cardboard in the bottom of raised garden beds to keep the grass from growing up through the potting soil. Black tarp the flat beds now to cut off the light to the weeds and grass.
@CountryViewAcres

We have used card board before. But we do not have any one hand. Going to use land scape fabrics in the bottom. I know it is not ideal.

@@CountryViewAcres Maybe some old roofing shingles which will block weeds and allow drainage. And, they will last. Warning - do not cut down the fence posts. If you have groundhogs around, I would bury/staple some 18" wide fencing along the perimeter to prevent them from burrowing into the garden (believe me, they will and if you think deer damage a garden, wait until you see what those critters can do). Treated wood has some nasty chemicals in it. I would try to figure a way to prevent the wood from being in direct contact with the garden soil (plastic film lining, hardware cloth, ?). BTW, the only veggie deer don't like is onions.

gardens way to small, you need to get minimum 600 Lbs of potatoes alone to last a small family until next years harvest, that size garden only big enough for you potato supply, . witch you dont need a fence around, as deer dont bother them, make another fenced garden 100"x 250" minimum to start, for all your other food, be sure to build a root cellar into a big hill side, and good drain tile, that was the very first thing i built on my land once i got the long drive way in, back from the main road and cleared out for barns, well. shop, and small home and later much more was cut and striped for fields, but a shed and root cellar were the first things built, i built the root cellar out of ceder timber saw right off the land i took them to a mill close by and had them saw 6 timbers, i had them saw just 2 sides of every log, they will never root. i find raised beds wastes far to much space and dry out way to fast, i built mine in 1983 and ripped them out in 1987. i left one 4'x200 for my worm composting,, potting soil in a garden,, order your seld 2 tandam load of black an red loom top soil, 22 yards each for 300 a load,, them tiny potting soil bags are not even read soil,, it is also cooked at 600 deg, to kill off worms bugs an stabilizes the stuff,, and cost a lot for a tiny bit in a bag

It's fine for now and the size they want for the time being. I don't believe they ever intended or planned on being self-sufficient on their homestead NOW, or even in the next few years. 600lbs of potatoes for two people per year ? They would be fat as hell no ? 100' X 250' is 25,000 square ft. I'm confused. Is this their home or are they starting a full blown farm ? The numbers sound way to big for two people ?
