It's very interesting to see how they modulate their performances for the stage as opposed to for the camera. They have to be larger on stage than on film.

Yeh, it looks like they pretty much have to shout their lines...I'm not sure the volume always works for the dialogue on stage though.

Stage acting is all in the body and film acting is all in the eyes and neither translates well to the other. An actor on stage would seem like he’s over acting on film, while an actor in a film wouldn’t even be able to be heard by half the audience on stage. Not to say subtlety and nuance is lost on a stage performance or big bold choices have no place in film. There is a lot of power in a subtle choice on stage, it just need to be clear to the entire audience, which is harder to do without over exaggerating it.
@NTWoo95 Жыл бұрын
"Performing for the back row" is a term meaning that when you're acting on stage, you need to perform in such a way that everyone can see and hear as much as anyone else in the audience, even the people all the way in the back row. Its not necessarily over-acting, its exaggerated acting
@simoncharacter0118 күн бұрын
@@LYBIceman i just caught that - its seems like stage acting calls for "over acting".

This is a story about a father and son trying to love each other the only way they know how. I was blessed to have a father that was able to express that deep, unconditional love that parents have for their children, and if he had to get a belt, it was cause I earned it. Shit, it breaks my heart watching this and I have NOTHING in my life that truly parallels Troy, Rose, and Cory's struggles, but I can empathize with folks that have great difficulty facing their shortcomings, failures, and disappointment in the hand life dealt them and it hurts my heart to see it play out. That said, as I grow, I begin to realize that all the negative we experience in life allows for the good to shine even brighter, ring more clearly, and remain in our memories long after the bad goes away. These two things, the triumphs of life AND the struggles, are what make life beautiful, what make life worth living. I'd like to believe Cory learned this lesson, albeit in a very difficult way, and that the lessons his father (both spoken and unspoken) gave him molded Cory into a wonderful human being.

@born2fight99 His understudy not what he studied in college. In theatre, an understudy is an actor who learns the lines and blocking of the main actor just incase the main actor is unable to perform. Pretty much if Denzel gets sick, his understudy would do the show in his place.

first. why does Jordan look so bad in the add on this page!? I agree that James Earl Jones was more powerful, but its also a social difference. In his play, during that time period these issues were looked upon differently. No one laughed when he said, "Mr. Wiki" is who you have the questions for. Yet, when Denzel said it the entire crowd laughed. That set the tone for the entire scene. Also the producers know the difference in times and recreate to appeal to a new crowd.

My pops told me when I was a little kid, "Dont be like me. I work hard every day with my hands, knees and back. Go to school, and work with your mind. DONT BE LIKE ME." It was hard to hear something like that, because as a kid, your dad is like a king. But he made me realize that I needed to take the chances in life that he never got to take. He made me understand that he was putting up with a hard life, so I wouldn't have to. When he retired, I moved him in with me and my family. He sees me wake up every day and go to work at a college.
@coastcity70294 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly, whereas Troy wants to crush his son's hopes and dreams like his were, because the only way he knows how to deal with the world is to rage against it, or fence it out. He has no forgiveness in his heart, so he has no peace. At least his religious wife is able to make peace with her past and the decisions she's made, and try to forge a better future for her kids.

My dad used to say the same thing. He worked as an LVN and a caretaker after getting out of the Army. But I saw his work ethic and the way he cared about his patients (when I got older, if I was in trouble, he'd make me work a shift with him...imagine spending a 12 hour Saturday at a convalescent hospital at 15). I knew what he meant, but I still wanted to be LIKE him...the best of him anyway.

What kind of foolish watches this scene and criticizes the laughter? The audience was supposed to laugh at that line. That was the point. It breaks up the scene a little. You can’t go from dramatic scene to dramatic scene back to back. A live audience has to be taken on a ride that’s enjoyable as well as pull on some heart strings.
