The new Fender Player Plus basses have replaced the old Deluxe models and they've been designed to be a more affordable alternative to Fender’s American Ultra models, offering upgraded versions of the standard Player series basses and coming out of Fender’s Mexico factory to keep the costs down.
Both of the basses featured in this video are finished in Fender’s traditional 3-colour sunburst, but there also some really cool new finishes including Tequila Sunrise and Bel Air Blue, for if you did fancy something a little more eye-catching.
Features that differentiate these between the basic Player series, they do share traditional Fender specs such as Alder bodies, bolt-on Maple necks and 34 inch scale lengths, but the biggest difference is probably the pickups and switching options as they all feature newly designed noiseless pickups. This means you get that punchy, thunderous low end from the P-Bass and the clarity of the jazz pickups, but without any of the buzzing that’s commonly associated with single coil pickups.
The Player Plus basses also feature all new active circuitry, adding a much wider variety of tones. This features an 18v pre-amp, with a quick access battery compartment hidden away in the back of the body, and boost or cut controls for the bass, middle and treble frequencies. This means that tonally, they're much more powerful and versatile than the standard Player models. There’s also a little toggle switch in the circuitry which allows you to flick between active and passive modes.
There’s also a pretty significant upgrade to the hardware on these basses compared to the standard Player series. They do feature the same high quality tuners up on the headstock, but down at the other end these new models feature a Fender HiMass bridge, as found on the much more expensive American Ultra basses. This is a top loading bridge, making it a little easier to restring, and because of it’s greatly increased mass it really helps improve resonance and sustain. The beefed up saddles have been designed to seat perfectly into their slots for rock solid intonation and stability.
In terms of playability, these Player Plus basses do feature the same “Modern C” neck profile that you’ll find on the player models, but the frets edges have been slightly rolled off on the plus, which makes quite a lot of difference to the way they play, increasing the comfort factor and giving the necks more of a "played in" feel. These also feature a flatter 12” fingerboard radius, as opposed to the conventional 9.5” radius found on the standard series, so they tend to feel a little more modern and high performance orientated, allowing you to play a little faster with more dexterity.
Along with the new finishes the Player Plus guitars also features some nice little cosmetic touches which make them look and feel a little more luxurious. Firstly, the satin necks seem to have a slightly darker tint (much like on the American models), and the pick guards are aged instead of being bright white, giving them a nice vintage vibe, and secondly, the Fender logo up on the headstock is a little more flashy, very similar that one that you’ll on their American Ultra series guitars.

These basses are gorgeous and sound very nice! I'd like to get a new 4-string P and I was thinking about getting the Squier 40th anniversary one as a backup for my standard Fender P, but now I'm thinking about getting one of these as an upgrade, haha. Played one at Guitar Center. Was the best sounding bass in the store, everyone agreed. Sounds nothing like the previous deluxe model has a very boutique quality about, a very clean transparent sound. It kind of remind me of my Andrew Goucher MTD bass. As soon as I get the money I'm buying one.

Could you please tell us if the active PJ pickups in these new Player Plus Basses are the same PJs that are used in the American Ultra Series? I need to know if the PJs used in the American Ultra series are better (or not) than the PJs used in the Player Plus series. I'm asking this question because I bought the PJ Player Plus bass and the P pickups seem to sound a bit dull sometimes and I'm trying to figure if it's because of the pickups or because of the amp (I'm using a Fender Rumble LT25). Thank you in advance for the input!
