Crazy how it was only a few years ago when I nabbed my seafoam green Squier Bullet for $99 new on sale at Guitar Center (and those sales happened all the time - definitely wasn't a unicorn deal). I still own and like that guitar. Why? I don't know why I just do lol. Pickups sound surprisingly good on it. But there's no way I would have paid $200 for it! And my $99 squier was string-thru! I will say though, that was the guitar that taught me how to fix fret ends. First play and it sliced my index finger right open (I didn't know 'sharp fret ends' were even a thing at the time.. learned the hard way).

I got my 14 year old daughter one of these for this past Christmas. It is blue with dual humbuckers. I gave it a once over... Couple of high frets, neck, intonation and strings (same stuff you see on Scar My Guitar). I put 11s on it. It stays in tune and feels a lot better now. It's great now. She plays it everyday!

My 1st guitar in 1978 was a Fender Mustang wuth the trem, made in America. Brand new 249 99 with the fender hard shell case. Couldnt afford a strat Or a les paul at 349.99 as a 14 yr old kid.. Now i kick myself in the ass because my wife hated me playing guitar sold it in my early 20s. Wish i still had it. Played beautifully

Nice color choice, Cathy! My 2018 Bullet Mustang has humbuckers instead of those "proprietary Single coils" in your Sonic version. I got a good one -- nice finish, nice fretwork, needed only a fret polish and new strings, of course. Has remained solid, needing only minimal adjustment since then. But i don't love the pickups.

Sean, I got a debut series and done a lot of work to it. Finally it is OK. I just bought a Fesley, tele style DIY. I was amazed and shocked how good everything went together. I really had very little to do to it. It sounds really good. No comparison between the Fesley and Squier. The Squier seems to be going backwards and Fesley is going forward. I believe your show and others are making a difference. Keep it up.

I bought a Squier Bullet mustang and a Squier Sonic mustang when they had them on sale. I went with the humbucker models and upgraded both of them. The only issue that I found was that one of the humbuckers had come loose when I unboxed it and I had to re-install it . I did enjoy the video with the technical difficulties and the technique for removing stripped out screws . One of the interesting challenges to modifying the mustang was having to solder wires so that I could get the coil splitter that I installed to work.

What's sad is that the Squire was probably built in the very same Indonesian factory as many of the other cheap guitar brands but Fender cheaped out. Which is ridiculously short sighted because they probably bought them in significantly higher quantities and as such should have been able to make better guitars and charge less for them than the other bargain brands.

Man that's why I love this channel I can always depend on you to tell the truth about these guitars from Amazon I just got a guitar for my Birthday yesterday it was an Epiphone Les Paul $499 and well worth the money no set up needed and a 45 day warranty if I don't like or want it I wouldn't mind getting one from Amazon to mod a little watching the channel has really got me thinking about it seriously thanks Shawn and Kathy 😂

I just got one of those at auction and it ended up being pretty sweet. I did have to re solder the bridge pickup connection to get it to work but the body and neck were just fine. Bridge does rattle like that one though. Its a fun cheap short scale that doesn't sound all that bad.

That's the second Sonic I've seen with that messed up routing hidden under the pickguard and the second Squier Mustang that the high E string falls off the edge and gets caught under a fret. Doesn't change my mind about Fender/Squier guitars, still my favorites. Cheers!

My Gearit Strat copy purchased at half that price was surprising nice. Rounded, level, polished frets so no possibility of fret sprout, a nice finish on the body with a gloss neck, no QC issues, and a lot of accessories and gig bag that are for the most part functional. The sound is old Strat with pots that actually work. String through bridge that is properly adjustable. The only real deficiency is not surprisingly the tuners. Locking tuners on order. How does that compare with other brands I don’t know but I do remember the frustration of buying a Squier Affinity with a bowed neck, sharp rough frets and so so parts for three times the price which just pales compared with the Gearit.

I had the same problem with the mustang I bought just like yours. I got mine for $135 on sale prior to Xmas and the string was stuck under the fret just like yours. I would not spend $200 for it. I wait until Fender puts their guitars on sale online and then I buy them. Mine plays just fine.

The Bullet line was discontinued some time last year and replaced by the latest Sonic series with a few new models like the humbucking Esquire that's been a good modding platform and I would love to get my hands on one of them! By the way, the Sonic Mustang, which also comes with humbuckers, is a 24-inch scale.

I traded for a 2023 squier cv70 strat a while back and its a great guitar. I changed out the wiring, electronics, and pickups recently, because i can see that it wont be going anywhere. Its good enough now that ive turned down trades for fender strats (i have other guitars im trying to do deals on). It took some money to get it to where it is, but i wasnt doing it to resell. I made it what i was wanting and wasnt going to start with a fender.

I bought one direct from Fender for $156. I didn't notice any issues. Mine has a belly cut that the Bullet ones don't have. I bought a Bullet HH from Musician's Friend for $125 that came from a store. It was obviously one from the wall in the store. I cleaned and set it up, but it has a few raised fret ends that I need to glue down. Fortunately I bought for something to just dick around with.

I see reviews on Squiers on YT and most of the guitars are bad value for money and most of the time have some issues, when I comment and voice my opinion when the guitar has issues I get berated by the Squier Fan Boys, some are even saying that modern Squiers are as good as MIM Fender models, absolute rubbish! As you pointed out, for the money you spend on a Squier you can get a much better instrument, some people are just attracted by the Squier By Fender text on the headstock, don't get me wrong you can come across well built models but they are rare!

For some reason they did away with the belly cut on the Sonic Mustangs. I bought a California Blue HH from Sweetwater and it's a great guitar - Straight out of the box. I wonder if Amazon is receiving rejects.

I bought a new Fender Bullet in 1984, it may have been made in 1983, but that thing stood head and shoulders above that thing, it was string through body too. I got rid of it to get a new Gibson Sonex 180 Deluxe (that WAS made in 1983) that I still have. I sometimes wish I had kept the Bullet, it was easy to play and looked nice, even though, it had a plywood body. Yes, I know my Sonex has a resin over wood body, believe me I know, the thing is a shoulder killer, but I love it.

What a shame! I have a Squier Bullet Mustang I bought on sale for 150 bucks and it's not shoddy like that at all. The strings are lined up, neck pocket tight, neat routing inside, decent fret work,and the Bullet Mustangs have a tummy cut. It's one of my favorite guitars to pick up and play, with the 24" scale and light weight it's actually a fun guitar. That Sonic you have there I would send back for sure. Fender needs to get their quality control in check. Thanks Sean!

My new Squier Tele was $449 and the side dot markers look like half moons on the thin laurel board while disappearing in the Maple. It's my first Tele so I'm not sure if that's normal? The fret ends are nice and smooth, though. I'll give them that. It was made in Indonesia, and I've had good luck on fretwork from there so far.

Brand names don't mean much on inexpensive import guitars. Several recognizable brands are made by the same companies producing weird non name brands. Granted, there may be requirements from the customer / brand name owners, but it's up to the manufacturer's QA people to ensure the product meets those requirements.

Speaking as a genuine bonafide modder, I hear ya Sean. The giant kissing sound on the backside of Squier guitars, is so deafening, it just makes ya want to slam the door. And by the way, brother… Hang on just a dang minute! Is there no extra hole in the neck pocket? How the heck did they paint that guitar? I say… HOW DID THEY PAINT THAT GUITAR WITHOUT THAT EXTRA HOLE? Golly! They also did NOT use a huge router on the outside edges to bevel the corners of the body either. My, my, my… No extra hole AND no heavy bevel, BUT somehow it got painted. They musta used MEATHEAD MAGIC to paint it! Because we all know I’m overthinking the gospel fact that PRS makes that hole to bevel the edges of their guitars. But what does PRS know about beautiful guitars, right? Thanks for another great video, boss. I’m appreciative.😊

Depends on model, era, and price. Mini or 3/4 Bullet Strat's have sucked for decades, and a 3/4 Yamaha Pacifica was a better option when you could find model in 3/4 size in USA.

I've had a couple of instances of a guitar snagging the E string under a sharp fret. One was my Gretsch, the most expensive guitar I've ever bought new. I did manage to fix it, and I love the guitar. That crappy mustard / custard coloured Mustang kinda sucks, eh? Do they not know about what's available these days?

About 20 years ago I bought a new MIM Fender Nashville tele online from an authorized Fender dealer. He swore that my guitar would arrive set up to factory specs. The box arrived in good shape, but the first thing I noticed was the low E string was off of the fretboard. The fit of the neck pocket was sloppy and required a shim. The nut needed to be reset as it was a full 1/16" off-center. Unbelievable. I took it to a pro shop and they gave it a good setup. The guitar plays amazingly. One of the best telles I've ever played. But I swore it would be the last new Fender I would ever buy. Quality assurance was ignored by both the factory and the factory authorized dealer.

I expect to do setups on guitars I purchase, to accommodate my playing style(s). That Squier should should be reported to QC, at least it is going back better than when you received it. These days it seems like the competition at the price point is far better than Squier, time for Fender to step up to the plate. Thanks for the review Sean.

If you look close at the early to mid sixties fender fretboards they are exactly like the fretboard on that guitar. Same thickness

wonder if there's more than one factory that is making the Sonics - I know with the Bullets, the ones you wanted were the ones made in Cort's Indonesian plant and not the Chinese made one. I have, among my number of Squiers, a Bullet Mini Strat which is the Cort model, and the insides looked nothing like that Mustang - nice and smooth rout, and properly shielded. The only Squier I ever had problems with is my CV Precision from 2010 - the neck wound up with a faulty truss rod and actually began twisting. Thank goodness they are Fender spec, I bought a new MIM neck from a dealer and it popped on nicely, very stable and the tone improved. I bought this little off-brand mini Strat for $10 from Value Village that was distributed by a toy company, and I'm currently fixing it up. Despite its cheapness, that toy guitar still had a better interior route than that Mustang.

Ran into similar issues with the Amazon Squire I just did a scarred job on. All 6 of the bridge screws were stripped in the holes. Had to do the glue and toothpick method and redrill all of them for the new trem. Had 3 high frets too. Have had better raw materials from no-name Goodwill guitars than that Fender.

First thing I did was go to 11’s and adjusted the truss rod. I truly hate top loading bridges! I think they put 9’s from the factory. Way to light for 24” scale!

I have 2 of the older squire mustangs with double humbuckers. They were pretty good out of the box. 10-52 strings stabilized the tuning, 9s are Too floppy on a short scale guitar. I gig with my squire mustangs. I have a fender mustang 90 and duo sonic, basically a mustang. The real Fenders are thicker and heavier, but u can gig with the earlier Mustangs

Buying guitars are such a hit& mis these days. I've only ordered one guitar off the internet, 7 years ago i orderd a Epiphone masterbuild 50mce from Sweetwater, It was absolutely PERFECT out of the box, even the strings were fine, i didnt change them untill i thought it was ready for a string change. I still have it and its amazeballs😂

I have a Squire from 1993 and the wood on the fretboard goes lower than the dots. The only real mod I had to make were the sharp corners on some frets. Stuff now is junk.

In all fairness - I don't think the neck screws were stripped. They probably drilled the body holes bigger to make alignment easier. Several builders do that. But the rest of it... Yikes @Fender - that's a hot mess

Yeeeaaaaahhhhh, I think I rather settle for a BCP or even Firefly guitar and mod the hell outta it by putting on guyker hardware and EMG pickups. Don't get me wrong, that guitar is really cool looking!

That fretboard is HALF the thickness of my Leo Jaymz...roughly the same price, too. This is embarrassing for the former king of budget guitars.

The strat squire was in so much better condition and cheaper, i got the red one and after a setup it beats all those expensive ones , that yellow bananna was shocking , i agree Shaun sent it back , old man from UK

I would never waste money on a Squier. MIM standard is a better one for a couple hundred more. Great video Sean. Caution ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ yellow for a good reason 😅
