Here for sale we have a Fender ST-562, a Japanese guitar amongst the first to be exported to the USA using the ‘Fender’ name. The 80’s saw an uprising in Metal guitars so the Contemporary series was Fenders attempt to enter this market, aiming to appeal to the surge in players seeking a ‘Super Strat’. This was achieved by installing a Schaller System One Locking tremolo, similar to a Floyd Rose, high output pickups and slimmer neck perfect for quick playing.
The playability on this Strat is fantastic, the neck is slightly slimmer than the modern ‘C’ found on the majority of recent strats, highlighting the area of the market this guitar was designed to appeal to. Fender Japan branded Gotoh Machine heads keep excellent tuning stability, as does the locking tremolo system.
The pickups are a trio of single coil pickups, so I would not go so far as to say they are appropriate for metal. They are however excellent for blues and rock with high output, plenty of sustain and some brilliant tones in positions 2 and 4.
One of the oddities I have found with this guitar is that whilst the neck has all the appropriate marking for an ST562, the body is stamped with a ‘57. The body looks to have been untouched with regards to the hardware and all of the electronics are Japanese, so there is nothing to suggest this is a parts guitar. There has been a repair to the neck pocket which is pictured and described in further detail in our luthier report.
