@@federicolopezmusic yeah I guess this makes sense as with the OX the real amp is still being used and only the speaker and mics are digital. Kemper is 100% digital. With Kemper you can switch between whole rigs and recording chains instantly, OX is just like recording an amp but only cab and mics are digital.

I once played with a guy who used a Princeton into a 412 with two drivers on top and two holes on the bottom. No pedals, from clean to a nice heavy crunch just with dynamics. One of the best tones I’ve ever heard. A small tube amp working hard will always sound sweeter than a large amp hardly working. My “opinion” of course.
@PaulHartnett215 жыл бұрын
I truly believe its all to do with volume. Everything sounds better louder. So a cranked amp will always offer that "something special" due to its relative loudness. The Kemper is fantastic tool for a recording artist as it really does limit the variables in getting a good tone in to your DAW. That's why i enjoy it.

A ss amp cranked produces different harmonics then the tubes, to human hearing is ugly as hell.

This video is WILD- possibly your best ever, Paul (nice to see the collaboration with and contributions from Sylvan). The analysis and breakdown of the Kemper versus mic was the best I’ve seen in terms of explaining what *that thing* is about the real thing. But that Kemper came *damn* close. Makes me wonder if any slight little tweak somewhere in the signal chain of either option- say, one click back on the upper frequency of the Kemper or, really, *any* change to the mic placement or position- could overlap the difference seamlessly. With greatest respect to your efforts, of course- five hours is a long time tweaking! Ultimately, why bother? Both options are great. The rest is up to the user. Great video!

I've got a Kemper and an OxBox. For my Kemper I mainly use profiles I've made and when I've recorded both my amp with mic's and pre's vs. my Kemper in the same recording, I can't tell which is which. Does it sound exactly the same, not exactly but neither does my amp when I record it one day from the next or when it's been on for an hour vs. 4 hours of if I have the mic a half inch different form the other spot. The OxBox with my main amp feels the most real when I'm listening through monitors and I love the quick speaker switching. For my main amps I use EV's and UAD doesn't have EV's on the Ox yet so I don't get to use analogous speakers but it sounds about as real as mic'ing a cab and the tweaking of the room sound really brings it to life.

@Toni_5606 жыл бұрын
I say it again and again: If you are able to record the processed audio signal from any hardware properly, you can reproduce it digitally. The human ear is incapable of differentiating between an analog signal and its digital counterpart. The difference comes from either not analysing the signal processing properly (or messing up the preset) or people changing their play style, the way they pluck and stroke etc. If a machine can't tell the difference in blinded studies, you cannot either.
@jeremy78186 жыл бұрын
To Ni - I disagree. You are confusing what people can properly articulate about what they are hearing and how they feel about what they are hearing. Tube amps aren’t going anywhere in my lifetime. With the ongoing innovations in attenuators tube amps are as popular as ever. For a reason. One you can disagree with but exists none the less.
@Toni_5606 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Hamilton As an engineer: you can feel however you like, but this is the same thing as so-called wine-experts, it's rose-colored glasses to rely on tube amps because they sound different. You can digitally copy any effect in the signal transformation processing chain and combine them properly (with too many effects you need appropriate processing power). Analysing an amp (pre amp, cabinet etc) in all aspects in a lot of settings with different input signals (volume, frequency) is a matter or time and effort, but if done properly you CANNOT differentiate between an original amp and an emulated signal. It's not a thing to debate whether you can do it (because you can), it's a matter of how well it is done and whether you like what you see (again the feeling and nostalgia or whatever you connect emotionally).
@jeremy78186 жыл бұрын
To Ni - as en engineer also - I still disagree. The irony is the comparator to “accuracy” is the original tube sound and dynamic compression/sag/etc of an actual tube amp... And secondly - as volume increases the differences become even more apparent. This is why Kemper has excelled in the HiFi studio / home amp area but less so when you can enjoy the dynamics of a cooking tube at some volume. You are de-linking the sound of the classic amp tube circuit with reality by calling it nostalgia when the fact is they actually do sound different when you step back from the theory and just listen. I’m not knocking digital. I’m just not calling it something it’s not either. Don’t be one of those Tesla snobs whom tell everyone gas engines are dead then can’t wipe the smile of his face when you drive a Porsche turbo... or tell everyone they didn’t actually like it then explain why electric cars are WAY more fun... 😂
@KeithMilner6 жыл бұрын
I have to largely agree with To Ni. As an Electronics Engineer, I know that if you can measure something and build an accurate mathematical model of it, then you can model it. If you have enough processing power, then you can do it in real time. That includes all of the dynamic characteristics of tubes, and sag and compression. I fail to see the irony in doing this: if you are modelling a system then the most accurate test of that model is against the thing you are modelling. An question that is often unanswered is "why bother, when you can have the real thing". Often there is no go answer to this (at least from an individual, practical point of view). Other times there are good answers. Modelling amps have characteristics that tube amps don't such as potability, durability, flexibility, and cost. If you can afford a good tube amp, and don't need the portability and flexibility of a modeller, then why not use a tube amp? Well, potentially there are other reasons, such as potential long term supply issues. Guitar amps are one of the few modern users of these tubes, and they are expensive and labour-intensive to make. Just like you may find that petrol supplies become scarce or excessively expensive in the future, you may find tubes hard to get hold of or stupidly expensive. There are two areas where I don't think tube amps work as well: 1. Driving a speaker - the way that tube amps drive speakers hasn't really been emulated by solid state amplifiers. This is an area where digital modelling has limited value because it's about power transfer to the speakers more than tone. Of course, this only makes a difference if you are in the room or on the stage listening to the amp directly. If you are in the audience listening through the PA, or listening to a recording on your home hifi, or even on stage listening through monitors/IEMs with the amp in an iso-box backstage somewhere, then you are listening to a recording of that driven amp/speaker, which absolutely can be modelled. 2. Latency - any digital modeller has to run an algorithm on a microprocessor to model the analogue components. This will always have some latency. This can and does have an impact on the way the amp reacts. As we increase processing power, we can reduce this latency and maybe make it so negligible that it's no longer noticeable. I'm not sure we are there yet (we may be with things like the Kemper). But any latency will be subtly noticeable to a great player (although not most players, and certainly not an average player like me). Of course, there is an argument that this only has an real impact if you are sitting right next to the amp. If you are standing 10 metres away on a large stage, then the latency of sound through air is probably a bigger issue.
@jeremy78186 жыл бұрын
Keith Milner - as a mechanical engineer I still disagree. And to restate my original position. Tube amps are not dead, still sound better (circa Sept 2018 - not hypothetically tomorrow or 2025), and that both musicians in this video preferred the tube and picked out the digital amp in 2 seconds. This is only probably the 5000th video comparing the best digital against a “good” tube amp... this wasn’t a dumble overdrive special vs the Kemper... so keep in mind that exceptional tube amps are still an even higher gold standard in tube amp tone out there in studios recording the highest level recording artists with Grammy winning credentials. if the irony is lost on you that is fine. It was tongue in cheek. It wasn’t intended to suggest modelling doesn’t improve or other... its quite the opposite. It is the digital crowd saying tube amps are the dying or dead art.... then only suggest to achieve parity... not better than. The irony is calling the thing no longer relevant while only seeking to copy exactly all its precise characteristics. Anyway... I’m out. This is opinion and always will be. But it seems people tie their identity in their products yet again and can’t accept that they haven’t solved “the problem” for everyone in existence.

Great video! Very cool you guys could hear the difference right away with the blind tests. Hey Paul I couldn't notice that you had the "warp" button on in your clips and ableton. If you are working with raw audio and doing a sound test, might want to disable that or use another DAW like protools because even when the tempo does not change in ableton there will be a slight difference in the sound from what was actually recorded. I'm sure people will come at me for this but i've listened a lot to both programs and i can hear that ableton does something to the audio, especially when warp is on.
@ronraducanu96336 жыл бұрын
This is an interesting vid. Mostly because as "blind" as the test is in the later aspect of the vid, it needs to be repeated when the sounds aren't so fresh to them. There are a tremendous amount of recordings that are done 100% digitally that unless you A/B them in the studio and go back and forth to try to find the difference in sound, or actually look for a difference, you'd never know. There is also that whole "amp in the room" and "pushing air" argument when discussing actual amps and their digital counterparts. Again, there are many vids on KZbin that compare digital vs. analog to view with this, but ultimately if you listen to a well produced record, you'd never be able to tell the difference. The other issue is post production. When recording, once the track is laid done, there is a ton of post production done, that can completely eliminate the argument that something sounds different. You can change the cab you use in the digital realm after the fact if you aren't completely happy with the sound. Something you can't do with an analog signal.

They all sound so good to me! It's so fun listening and comparing the differences, but I truly don't have a preference between any of these! @@tristan3665 sure. I use an external sound card to help with latency. It's called a *Scarlet 2i2* (there's a newer version called 2i4). That is USB powered into my PC with it's low latency drivers. I put my guitar lead into the front of 2i2. And as for output, I can use a guitar lead to my amps *output* (you can use the amp input aswell)or I usually just plug in my headpohones instead. It's a 1/4" (same as guitar lead) output, but you can use a 3.5mm adapter for headphones. $4000 for the Kemper and Ox and 4 hours programming to get one great amp emulation. I have a 1966 Princeton Amp, 65 Airline 5 watt (Champ circuit), mid 60s Danelectro Cadet, mid 60s Lindell Tremolo Deluxe, and an 80s solid state Fender Sidekick 25, all of which cost me less than $1800 in total. Maybe I can't get the thousands of amp sounds that a Kemper can do, but with the variety I have, I get all the types of amp sounds I want and need, and I have them as immediately as it takes to plug in. Maybe someone like Steve Howe could benefit from one of these setups to streamline a live rig, but for those prices I think it is not worth it for the average guitarist.

For what fits the bill...lots of them... for myself a good quality modeling amp is badass. I don't have to purchase any pedals and my internet connection gets anyone's ideas and brilliance installed if it's doable and worthy. My creative limiters are my passion. The sounds that can be made are way off into the zen as quantum as one wishes. My hands are the single biggest note shapers. It is very visceral, alive and great fun. I can record in the moment. I can play backing tracks through bluetooth opening an unlimited creative medium. I also don't worry about finding a tube if I have a failure and where I live it's a reality that I plan for with many tangible things. I crunched some quick numbers and have easily factored a million different possibilities for sound. In all truth if one was to complete the math it would become apparent there is no absolute provable quantifiable count which is ok with me. I'll be happy with making a few awesome riffs in the moment of that bit of flow. I'll also be thankful my music is of an analog l.p. groove era. From billy squire to billy Thorpe children of the sun and the other wadzillion great electron rich material tube amp songs. By a heated analog wave expressing emotional tube passion that manifests being spoken in languages called music. A big what it is to be human...I'm very thankful.

My unsolicited advice is... Figure out what kind of amp sound you want for Rock. Is it you want to fender type sound? Vox? Marshall? Those are the three main types of amp sound you hear in classic rock. You're not going to find an app that does all free Imo. Do you want an amp that has good clean Channel and also a good drive Channel or do you want an atom that has a good single channel that can be set to a more clean sound or more overdrive sound? Also you need to think about wattage. Are you playing other musicians that have very big ants that they turn up super loud? Are you playing in front of an audience? What kind of venue then? Imo most people don't need an amp with more than 15 or 20 watts, that is unless you need a lot of clean Headroom at high volume or you're playing in a very loud environment with other musicians that have very loud amps and they're cranked

Hey Paul, I'm kind of a newbie on the subject but it brought my attention that you use a loadbox there. Do you use it with all kinds of amps or can it be used with solid state or Marshall AVT style lovechild of tube&solid state amps. Thanks

Hi Paul, could you please do a video on the Ableton Push 2 with all its features(looper?,drums etc)and show how to use it (I mean creating the sounds like in the loops,maybe a tutuorial?)with the software and so on? And do a demo? Thanks

Pool sticks. Chairs sliding, talking, singing, clapping, glasses tinkling, bathroom doors...no one in a small club would know as they sound so close. Once you sound that nice an audience just wont care. That’s not profound I just think you would make them happy with any of the 3. Cheers Paul, nice video.
@MarcCoteMusic6 жыл бұрын
You don't even have to sound anywhere near that nice... as long as your sound isn't terrible you'll be fine for playing a bar gig.
@jasong5466 жыл бұрын
I guess I was thinking of the folks who would insist that one sounds bad, and that they would say the ox or kemper would be that one. Because these guys showed which is which. It always seems to happen, and that’s ok. Guys get so wrapped in stuff their audience never hears. The way it is I guess.

I took five hours to get a good profile out of the Kemper. It costs three times as much as a Prince which has the sound everyone wants. Ehm why bother?

it takes five hours if you are still learning, and it can nail many other tones and effects that you would need to buy another amp otherwise

1) so, if i understand correctly each profile in the kemper is a representation of a real amp at a specific pre amp setting, right? so if i would want to change those setings then i would need to have with me on my pedal board a kemper REMOTE and from there I could change to other pre.amp settings from another profile of the same amp, right? 2) on the second part of the video you created a different profile with a specific pedal.......... why did you do that? is it because the kemper power head doesnt take pedals as good as a real amp? IF ANYONE WITH KEMPER EXPERIENCE MAY ANSWER (OR PAUL HIM SELF!) I WOULD BE SUPER GRATEFUL!
@piquesegue6 жыл бұрын
Quite interesting. Patreon or Kemper won't get or change it. Back on earth, true sound, gravity. Sold my Helix and don't miss a thing. Back to Fender Champ. And That Pedal Show. Yeah 😊

Folks , a newbie guitar player here asking for advice. In the long run what will I better off going with , tube amplifiers with an attenuator or modules like the ToneMasters ? Keep in mind that I live in as apartment.
@bassax70456 жыл бұрын
Limitation of the Kemper , you dont clone the amp but a fragment in time of that amp with only that setting . so once its a patch you dont have a versatile amp but just the clean or dirty sound you patched . lucky for the Amp manufacturers you still better buy the real amp if you like it .
@easye9-216 жыл бұрын
That's true, but with most good commercial profiles they will you give you multiple patches covering the whole range of the amp, from clean to overdrive and with pedals as well.

Kemper is marketed as a money saver...how when you have to buy expensive profiles or buy the real amp to profile in the first place...

I owned a few boutique and vintage tube amps in the past. Now I have the Kemper and I have sold them. Do the Kemper sound as good as they do? No. Some of the nuances that good tube amps produce under ideal conditions are impossible to replicate. The problem with these tube amps however is that you almost never play them under ideal conditions: when you are asked to turn down the volume you loose the sweet spot, when ou play outside you may lose bass frequencies, etc. So I think that the Kemper may even sound better than real tube amps in real world applications. Plus, with the Kemper bad sound engineers have a hard time spoiling your sound.
@wolfnstrings6 жыл бұрын
Would you recommend a Kemper as a close enough alternative to a tube amp? I am looking at it as a possible solution to needing tubes and maintenance.

A lot of pro bands are using digital on stage or in the studio these days. Metallica are using Axe-Fx on stage, Gary Holt (Slayer) recorded his parts for Repentless album (2015) using Kemper, Def Leppard recorded guitars for the last 2 albums using Guitar Rig 5. The list is bigger (and is growing bigger every year) but it's no point filling up the comments with this. Digital will take over valve amps the same way it took over recording on tape in the early 2000.

I feel like this is paid for my Kemper. The princeton sounded nothing like the other two, and the modelers sound like a cheap solid state

Kemper are strong marketers and sell loads based on hype. It's cheap and basic and sounds nothing like a real amp.

Why is it so damn hard to find a kemper profile of a CLEAN, non edge of break up prince/dlx/twn profile!? This profile literally sounds like a tweed blues Junior. Nothing wrong with that -I actually own one of these real amps-, I just want a damn clean, lots of headroom, no twang, profile
