for sure great innovative guitar and bass player; could move between everyone's style with ease... made the business right for song writers... re-invented the turnaround... John crossing over to the early reggae is not lost on Waylon fans after-all it was Waylon that cut-timed all the beats for us

@@forcemajeur.5138 there's an interview with chris scruggs where he dives into that half-time... personally I thought it was early reggae that solved the tempo problem but really it was waylon many many years before on so many levels ie over-riding producers and labels to get it done.... this is one interview with chris and gibbs... chris has gone on about it at length... I'll try to find more... enjoy!

Interesting and versatile phaser 🙂! One observation, though: In spite of the “Instant Waylon” switch (Sweet Spot), I think the plain-old 2-stage phase, with some minor knob-tweaks, and from the Telecaster, of course, is the closest to Ol’ Waylon 😎🎸🤠❤️! The Strat sounded great through this pedal, too 🙂, although it doesn’t have the edge like the Tele does, naturally. “It’s the same old tune, phaser and guitar - where do we take it from here?” 🤠🎸😎 Yee-hah! 😁

Unity is a tough nut to crack. Perceived loudness is much lower when you have a bunch of notches in the freq spectrum, so manufacturers tend to add some make-up after the effect.

This phaser doesn't sound anything like any phase tone that Waylon ever used. This thing has a weird, quirky univibe sort of thing going on that sounds more like Hendrix than Waylon. Waylon used conventional mass production pedals that were readily available and easy to find in their day, and not any boutique, cork sniffer stuff. That kind of stuff didn't even exist in the prime of Waylon's career. A simple MXR Phase 90 or Phase 100, or an old Boss Phase Shifter or anything like that will get you a good Waylon sound. Phase isn't that boutique or complicated. In the 1970's, most country players were either using the built in phase effect on a Peavey or Music Man amp, or they were using a Phase 90. Just get a script Phase 90 and you'll have the classic phase sound that almost everyone is chasing in the first place. Especially if 1970's country is the sound you are into.

I said the same thing on the Fender youtube page about the pedal. This sounds nothing like the phaser tones Waylon used. Lots of comments saying Waylon used Phaser on all of his stuff which is also totally not true! There were periods where he did use it and utilized it, but a lot of the time he played direct, used a phaser lightly or use a chorus pedal during the 90's. On recordings, Reggie Young probably phaser more than Waylon. Like Chris said, Waylon was not fancy pedal pants! He used the basic and normal gear of the time, nothing special. End of the day, Waylon's great Tele playing and Tone comes his Telecasters and from the hands of Waylon himself.
@thezachryan3448
@thezachryan3448 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I didn't hear a single phase tone that reminded me of Waylon at any point. I get much closer with my normal 90 or my EVH 90. This definitely has a trem quality to it that i'd love for other things, but it definitely does not sound like Waylon to me.
@gavvino1
@gavvino1 11 ай бұрын
yep. Just get a script phase 90. Done. This is too much. Also near the end of his career Waylon used a TC Electronic chorus.

I REALL REALLY REALLY wanted to love this pedal, as i am a HUGE Waylon fan....and it looks so stinkin' cool. But Fender really screwed the pooch with this one. I mean, how hard is it to design a decent JFET phaser? Theres hundreds of schematics, DIY kits, etc all across the net for phaser pedals. Everybody and their brother sells one, ranging from $30 to the stratosphere. And only the cheapest Chinese junk has more distortion than this pedal. Every JFET phaser ive run across has at least "some" distortion (The Boss PH-1r being the least distorted), but this thing is way too much. All the engineers wouldve had to do is drop the voltage down on the input side, and then boost the gain back to unity on the back end, like the Boss does (an output volume control wouldve been even better). Who signed off on this thing? Is Fender's goal to sell quality and usable gear for the discerning musician, or cool-looking knickknacks to sit in the glass case of a collector? What an embarrassment.
