I live next to the woods. About 22 years ago three little kitties popped up out of the woods and my three young children were in love with them. I built heated houses for them on our back porch, got them all fixed when they got a little older, they lived on our back porch. We fed them canned cat food in the morning, dry cat food bowls were never empty. About two years later, a feral mom cat found heated houses , Food, everything you need on our back porch. She moved in in over the next two years she had two litters. We got the kittens fixed so we wouldn’t be smelling ammonia and they wouldn’t continue to populate, but, we could not catch that mom to have her fixed. Long story short we ended up with 16 cats. we didn’t notice at first but just about every day there would be a squirrel dissected on the back porch, a full-size redheaded woodpecker, baby birds that couldn’t fly yet, bunnies, Koyie fish from a nearby neighbors pond, snakes, not to mention chipmunks and field mice. Every day there was a sacrifice on our back porch. Some mornings I would come out And the sacrificial object would still be alive and so mangled that I couldn’t move. The one that broke my heart was a full-size woodpecker. With a wing span of about 30 inches. It’s neck was broken. All the cats were sitting around like Dracula’s wives looking at it after they pulled half of its feathers out. That woodpecker looked at me, it could only move it size. It broke my heart but I had to put it out of its misery. over the next 10 to 15 years, we noticed there were no more rabbits, squirrels, Chipmunks, baby birds, woodpecker’s, I live in a valley, it was completely barren of anything but raccoons and deer.. many times I would see a cat running across the yard with a baby bird squealing for its mother. I tried to catch the cat to get them to drop the bird, but it never worked. They would take them down in the woods and dissect them. finally 18 years later, I got my porch back. I got rid of the four heated houses that I made, we had the porch remodeled. Finally the last cat finally expired. Here we are two years later, we actually have rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, baby birds, even garter snakes and turtles have returned. I will never have an outside cat again. They are natures natural born killers, they kill not to eat, they kill to kill.. The Egyptians that domesticated cats somewhat, could never breed out of them the instinct to kill. if you have a cat, don’t let it out. I never understood why some people hate cats, until now.....

@@rengeorge9268 I had no say in the cats staying or going. My three kids that were all under age 5 and my wife thought they were so cute... they actually were cute at the beginning, but then the reality over the years set in .. actually, just looking at it from a monetary position, cats have cost me in excess of $200,000.. we were buying 50 pound bags of cat food and a case of canned cat food every 2 to 3 weeks.. I ended up with six heated houses, little A-frames I made that had carpeting/metal floor, 100 W lightbulb under the house for heat, on 24/7 six months of the year. including the vet annual visits and about $150 a month in food, the cats cost me about $3500 a year., that’s $35,000 over 10 years, it’s easily $60,000 over the 17 years..We never went on a vacation because someone had to feed the cats twice a day. here’s where I really lost money my mother died and left me two houses on 5 acres of flat land with a trout stream running through it. My mother lived in one house, my uncle lived in the second house. When my uncle died my mom rented the house out to a couple women cat lovers. They only had two cats when my uncle died, my mom rented her country house out and moved back into her regular house closer to hospitals and family and things like that. Well when my mother died I inherited that property with the two houses. I went on to tell the tenants what happened. When I arrived, the tenants that were two women with two cats had already heard, they stole everything that wasn’t nailed down including all of the wall-to-wall carpeting, the refrigerator, the washer dryer, the dishwasher, the kitchen countertop, most of the drop ceiling panels, and they had the electric hot water tank which was about six months old disconnected for transportation, but I got there before they could get it. they had not paid rent for seven months, I never met them they did not have a lease I didn’t even know who they were. I just knew they were cat lovers because of the smell in the house The second house that my mother lived in, a true cat lover lived in. Actually she was a cat hoarder. She was affiliated with a local animal friends place She took the cats that no one would adopt because she had a house in the country.. she was not home when I arrived, but I saw that she had cut a little hole in a big window about the size of a pool table for the cats to come and go. I looked in that window and I was horrified. There were cats everywhere. There were balls of cat hair throughout the room I was looking into which was the kitchen and into the living room. These balls of Catur were like tumbleweeds. While I was looking in the window I got attacked by fleas.. The smell was almost nostril burning. to make a long story short, that woman had over 50 cats, and she had lived there for a couple years. here’s where I lost the money going through the tax records, my mother was paying taxes based on the value that State had set on her property. The total value that was being taxed which is usually about half of what the actual value is when you go to sell the place, was $194,000. Which means, the place would easily have sold for a quarter of $1 million... because of the situation with the cats, and the smell in the house that could never be removed, and that woman was not cleaning up after the cats, I had advertised the property as is, and a total disaster.. I ended up selling the property with two houses on it for $62,000 to a real estate woman that wanted just the property... it has been eight years since my mother died and I sold those properties. They are still unlivable because of the damage and the smell of cats so I lost about $180,000 from my mothers property being destroyed by cats/cat lovers..And having all those feral cats that we ended up with on our back porch, the vet bills to have them fixed and get their shots every year, feeding them, running 600 Watts of heaters 24 seven for six months a year for almost 17 years... it’s safe to safely underestimate my loss from cats in dollars, as close to a quarter of $1 million.. when I think of all the things we didn’t do, all the new vehicles we didn’t buy, when I think of that much money could’ve paid for College for all three of my kids.. that’s more than I paid for my house which took me 30 years to pay off....if I had put a quarter of $1 million into an annuity, that would pay me $14,500 a year for life .. when you think of it in those terms, I must’ve been out of my mind to allow that to happen. But, I remember my wife and kids saying to me about the cats... “ but they’re so cute”

The black death came with fleas and other parasites that rode on the backs of mostly rats, not mice. "It happened because of cat massacre" Wrong. As I said, the mice problem started in 1788. It didn't just happen yesterday just because you saw it on the news. "Really, don't mess with nature" Finally, something right. Don't introduce species that aren't native to an area. @@Lord_of_Snels To say that cats are not efficient hunters of mice is simply and completely false. In addition one can't just look at the number of mice killed per animal, but by the animal population as a whole. Cats breed rapidly, snakes and owls do not. Plagues occur due to exponential breeding under the conditions you've described, and another suitably prolific and rapid breeder is necessary such that the population curves of the predator species do not lag too far behind that of the mouse population in the early stages of a plague. Owls and snakes can hunt as many mice individually as they like, their numbers will not swell with mice numbers in short order the way they need to for sufficient downward pressure on mouse numbers to be maintained. Wherever crops such as wheat have been produced, mice have been a problem, and wherever mice have been a problem, cats both domestic and feral have been utilized to manage that problem. This has been true for 12000 years since the dawn of agriculture. That Australian farmers haven't recognized this frankly puzzles me. Now I recognize that cats are an invasive species in Australia, but so are mice, and if you try to limit the numbers of one of those invasive species but not the other invasive species that is its main prey, then you just swap the numbers of one invasive species for another. Cull feral cats if you want, but only when mice have been fully and completely eradicated from the continent, which let's face it, isn't going to happen because it's essentially impossible. The damage was done when they were brought over, now it must simply be managed.

mouse plagues have been happening ever since the introduction of house mice here, house mouse plague outbreaks are triggered by a period of dry followed by rain and a good crop yield which causes the mice to breed suddenly, when the grain is harvested the mice that were once hiding in the fields move in, house mice have multiple avoidance adaptions towards cats, native wildlife don't, cats are not efficient predators of mice but native dasyurid predators, raptors, owls and snakes are, but many of those are also predated by cats, there is no relationship between cat culls and mouse plagues, mouse plagues have occurred long before the idea of culling feral predators was even a thing, but there is a relationship between cat culling and a double in numbat and other critical weight range marsupial populations

I would hope cat lovers understand the importance of getting rid of farral cats. I do admit tanning there furr seems a little out there but at least the cats aren't farmed for there furr. It's very important to remove ferell cats.

@@caesar7786 it has been proven many times that all cats that are let out are killers. They may not eat what they catch, but they still kill. All our native birds and animals. The only cats that do not are the ones that are kept indoors and taken for walks on a lead. The others? If they get in our traps they are dead. And there are many of us who want our wildlife to live. So if you have a cat door in your door expect it to not come back one day.

eating them and using the fur is the best you can do if you're gonna keep killing them. do not let it go to waste. but this man? he built fancy, useless stuff with them and the way he did his work fails to veil his hatred. any creature has the potential to become a pest if its population is not controlled, what intrigues me is how they got all these cat-kill statistics. bees and many other insects are getting destroyed, but peopke cannot part ways with their mobile phones, and the big cats are endangered already, from whales to even certain endemic sharks, plastic dumped in ocean are killing them all and nobody cares. so this all seems a bit bullshyte to me.

I'm curious. Not being Australian, if I filmed there, would I be legally bound to leave an indigenous advisement or is it just courtesy? I've never seen it before.

This is a reminder to keep your pet cats indoors/on leash. While they may have not gone feral, they’re still a danger to native wildlife wherever you live. It’s irresponsible, and harms native wildlife. It’s sad there are still cat owners who prioritize their cat’s “happiness” over their neighborhood ecosystem, and then make up stupid excuses.
