I was recently at Magellan's cross in Cebu for the first time and fascinated by by what I saw and read. And now I am even more amazed after reading this article. (Lapu-Laup as national here? Not so fast.) Lapu Lapu was perhaps 70 years old at the time and probably wasn't even at the battle of Mactan! (Many have told me Lapu Lapu killed Magellan!) With that said, the battle was still a great symbol of courage and the fight for freedom by the people of the Philippines. We can all appreciate that. Has there been a movie made about Magellan meeting King Rajah Humabon or about the battle of Mactan? I found a few things on you tube about Magellan, mostly documentaries, and can't wait to view them. Sadly, I do not find any epic films of historic value about this event. That may be due to the inaccuracies and conflicting beliefs of this event and time period. Still, giving great direction and casting, it would be a great film to watch.

Im a commercial pilot instructor. Any pilot, sailor or traveler on cars too knows all vehicles need to have the maps or charts of the route to follow not only one and the others "follow me". What about if the ship or vehicle in front loose the others in a storm or simply at night? The others, with no maps or idea where they were going will get lost. That is one of the rules of fleet or multi vehicle navigation. Magellan didnt give any maps of the route to the others ships, only the portughese crew one in which he was too. That is a huge violation of navigation rules. Im a pilot instructor. He lied to the others about giving them the maps after a while, but didnt. Huge Magellan Devilish Plan to make the others get lost and he and the Italians and portugeese navigate only and put down Spain sailors. He wanted the Spain crews to get lost, of course. That is why the others mutiny againts him. The liar also become a murderer. Good his arrogance made him try to defeat about 1,000 islanders with only about 50. It is facts cause it is really Enrique de Malacca...the Malay men a slave n sailor of Magellan who had voyage that ship after Magellan dead in Filipina killed by Lapu-lLapu he was warriors of Malay Filipina.
@saypool9310 жыл бұрын
Ferdinand Magellan navigator's name is Enrique in spain manuscript but in english they called him "Henry" or "Henry the Black" because he look so dark brownish skin. So actually Henry is originally "Malay" people that Magellan hired him to be his navigator. Henry actual name is "Awang", the reason Magellan hire him because in that time Malay's people fully knowledgeable in sea route and every passage while indeed the european call them had the sixth sense, the sense of the "sea". When Magellan died the crew make Henry to be a captain of Magellan ship because he's know better than the others crew. This history has been hidden by the "man"(if you refered the movie of "the school of rock" so you know who is the "man") but not every secret can't hold for a very long period of time so it will smoothly break from mouth to mouth and slowly showing itself again to the world and embark in the history again that has been hidden worstly by the "man". I'm not quite sure if Jerry Bruckheimer want to reveal the secret or still hidden the secret or somebody else trying to or dumb happend, that Jack Sparrow character history is actually take from the history of "Henry the black". The act of Jerry to make the Pirate of The Carribean movie is actually caused some people wanted to investigate the character of the Jack Sparrow history and well it's answer come to the "Henry the Black".

To some comments bellow about the crew, Spanish mainly of course, and many other European and not only nationalities. But most of the Pilots, as a part of the crew, were Portuguese (Pilots and also Captains, in the Pacific Ocean Part). Barbosa as exemple comanded the Victoria. This voyage was a part of Magellan periplus (first) around the world (1505-1512-1521), wich included direct participation in major global events in the Indian Ocean and beyond. Also his more direct friends Abreu and Serrão (even cousin) led the first European fleet into the Pacific Ocean (East).

When Magellan arrived in Cebu, he was take charge to communicate and negotiate with the King as the King understand malay language. Magellan promised to make him the captain of the ship. However Magellan was killed, Enrique so disappointed with the demise of Magellan. He then plotted with the king to ambush to ship and their treasures. Pedro Mediterraneo That is incorrect. Portugal was established as an independent nation or as a country state before Spain in 1128 under one King D. Afonso Henriques, that is approximately 200 and something years before Spain. Spain was founded in 1492 as an independent nation after the main Kingdoms of Castile and Leon slowly merged together to defeat the Moors completely, ultimately becoming an unified power. Off course, both regions had previously been joined together as one land, and both regions conquered by previous kingdoms like the Romans. Following that, Kings and Queens from both lands ruled the Iberian Peninsula (that is the land mass of Portugal and Spain combined) and Spain was larger in landmass, ultimately being more powerful than Portugal. As a sea power, Portugal was the first ever European sea nation with a Portuguese Prince, "Henry the Navigator" beginning the Age of Discovery. I may be bragging for my country, I don't know what to tell you about ages of countries but Portugal is one of the oldest nations in Europe. Still, to be fair, age means nothing... Portuguese accomplishments speak for themselves. (And we do have many...) As do Spanish accomplishments speak for themselves, as do British, Italian, Dutch and French. As does every other nations.

Megellan was a brilliant man who perhaps got ahead of himself. I am sure he possessed the same sort of mind as Julius Caesar. But where as luck charmed Caesar throughout his life, Megellan somehow fell out of luck's favour for just one moment. Who knows what heights he may have achieved. It is almost as if his death was a mistake of destiny, as if it wasn't supposed to happen the way it did. But alas, history and time are merciless, even towards what may or may not have been. History moved inexorably forward, despite his untimely death. In his place, 18 desperate men returned to claim his triumph. Elcano and Pigafetta are the only names remembered, and even still only by historians. The rest are virtually forgotten. But they lived through something that no one else ever could again.

You can not really compare el cano to Ferdinand Magellan. what Magellan did was insanely difficult, the way back on known waters by el cano was a piece of cake compared to Magellan
@vicentelopez006 жыл бұрын
You are wrong, my friend. The voyage of Elcano was more difficult because he did it without scales during five months to avoid the portugheses. Hunger, storms, fatigue and diseases killed 22 men during this trip. We know Magellan and this expedition thanks to Elcano. Magellan failed. He died in Mactan, Philipine islands.

mayumi handesuke I do know the whole story, and far better, do know quite a lot about history. And I do also know that Lapu-lapu was a mere primitive savage who contributed with nothing for mankind, only for pinoy nationalistic pride. He killed Fernão de Magalhães aka Ferdinand Magellan when he was completely left behind and outnumbered by the natives - very typical, even today in south east asia, 'guys' are only tough when they are in big groups or when they carry knives and guns. One-on-one bare hands it's not their thing, for their inner spiritual nature resides in cowardice. Fernão de Magalhães was indeed a brave man whose exploration proved an astonishing fact for science on that time, that the planet was spheric. He provided high valuable information for cartography and geographical documentation. Showed bravery and a mentality comparable only to the spirit that modern astronauts have. By the way, according to the technology available and consequent difficulty of that specify era, his achievement was substantially much harder to accomplish than when man landed on the moon. Lapu-Lapu had no idea of what he done.

Ferdinand Magellan wants to conquer the Philippines that's why lapu-lapu killed him. and no one knows if its true or not. unless if someone was watching them while they were having a fight .and tells everyone the truth. only if that person is still alive LOOOL
@BoneMachine2810 жыл бұрын
mayumi handesuke The truth is that the spanish fleet had commissaries whose duties amongst many, was sending regularly documented information such as mission diaries or any other official relevant messages to the king of Spain. Fernão de Magalhães wasn't even Spanish, he was Portuguese. Also he was hired by the king of Spain for nautic purposes. Fernão de Magalhães personal goals were others, nothing to do with any conquest of the Philippines… His quest was rather scientific, not materialistic. However, the spanish, saw opportunity in colonising that new territory, since it was occupied by natives rather primitive. The pinoy native tribes didn't documented information in books and libraries as europeans did, only through oral tradition. They were rather primitive and 'uncivilised' (they barely had any clothes and lived in huts) compared to the other developed north-eastern and north-western societies of that period. You might need to learn how to separate things based on historical evidential facts. No wonder the Filipino educational system is so bad.
@1amwh4t1am10 жыл бұрын
Bonemachine Obviously you don't know anything about Southeast Asian history and culture at all. When Magellan arrived in the Philippine islands, it was anything but for scientific reasons; he went there to increase the wealth and influence of Christendom, the typical aim of any conquistador wannabe. The Philippines were already occupied by tribes of Malayo-Polynesians with advanced knowledge or sea-faring, trade, and metallurgy, who are imbued with a fierce sense of freedom which impedes them from uniting their efforts, but were rather tied to tribal vendetta-type warfare typical of several Pacific cultures at the time. These natives followed either their own local religious ancestral worship-based customs, or are part of the larger Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic cultural sphere in Southeast Asia. They traded extensively with Srivijayan Indonesia, the Bruneian chiefs, Japan, China, the Viet and Thai kingdoms, and all the way to the Indian subcontinent. They colonized the Pacific islands all the way into the heart of the ocean and mapped the largest body of water in the world. They mapped the tides and the stars of the Southern Hemisphere, which requires knowledge of abstract math and cyclical time, a feat not replicated by any other Europeans until the Dutch pulled it off in the 17th century. Their language was a variant of Sanskrit called Kawi, or Jawi, and had a written system called Baybayin. Their local relationships were profitable at best, tenuous at worse, but all members of this early society benefited. All the other European explorers knew this about Southeast Asia since the time of the Romans and the early Spice Road traders, they even had a name for the region: Spice Islands. In this setting, Magellan creeped in from the east, without a drop of knowledge about these interconnections between the cultures that he ends up disrupting. Can one of the supposed great European explorers be this stupid? It is hard to believe anyone who is unable to foresee the consequences be taken seriously by any of the European monarchs of the period. However, they did, although the difference is he failed miserably - the Portuguese monarchy laughed him off and made him desperate enough to pander to their sworn enemy, Spain, who still laughed him off and might as well given him an inflatable boat for the whole trip. No one in Europe cared for what happened to Magellan or the history of his trip until the 18th century when Spain was about to lose their colonies to the US, the truth is not hard to infer. He was undermanned and outgunned, he picked the losing side of a tribal war, he had an unreliable crew of Spaniards who did not trust a Portuguese, and he knew nothing of where he was or who he was fighting against. Ignorance killed Magellan, and nearly killed all his crew. Bonemachine, you should learn from Magellan: don't be ignorant so you won't get killed by native warriors from places you have no idea exists.
