Listen man that heel hook was great idea, especially if you know or heard rumors Francis was already injured. A knee bar or a heel hook would have either made him tap or damage his knee bad enough not to be able to stand. The thing Is Francis turned out to be a better grappler than we all thought. To be fair Gane won the last round with a takedown and two submission attempts. However Francis ended the better part of the round ontop of him (no takedown, just reversed positions) and with minimal damage. So let me get this straight. Cyril is said to be the hybrid, and future of Heavyweights. Yet a basic, heavily injured and gassed Francis beat him convincingly. Man didn't really strike much and as for his non Ground and Pound. Cyril is supposed to be an all rounder. Imagine the Francis that fought Stipe. Fit, aggressive with great hands. It would have ended in the 3rd at the latest..

Francis was never gassed he says this in his interview on this same channel, his grappling training helped with his cardio and he had been improving his cardio long before his Stipe rematch. A lot of fighters lose their first title shot depending how good the title holder is, GSP lost his first title shot against Hughes. 2 different medical professionals on youtube have made videos covering Francis' injury claims ( white doctor and a black surgeon) both saying tearing your acl and mcl does not compromise your knee's stability and its common for athletes to still compete just fine with such injuries. Even Francis' coach was interviewed on this show and said that after Francis heard a 'pop' and went to the doctor, he still moved completely fine during training and saw no difference but they still proceeded with caution leading up to the fight. Francis has been doing mma 9 years and Cyril 3 years with an undefeated Muay Thai career he fought at 212 pounds. Francis has always been well rounded as he had 3 submissions early in his career before he got accepted in the UFC where he got another submission win. Francis claimed in his interview that he felt Cyril was too fast and felt he couldn't catch him so they went to grappling because he didn't want to get caught himself. Even if Francis never got injured or was worried about his knee, Cyril is just too fast way faster than Stipe whose been KOd in the 1st round by DC when Stipe was in his prime. Cyril has never really showed advanced BJJ in any of his fights and both DC and Rogan were criticizing him during the fight both saying that he didn't understand the escapes and BJJ positions. This was a display of experience from Francis and don't forget Francis was still almost 20 pounds heavier than Cyril which you will only see such a difference in this weight class 247 vs 265. An uninjured Francis would have made more mistakes trying to strike the faster Cyril and it actually helped Francis that he was injured that he went to grapple in the 3rd round which if he wasn't injured he would have probably grappled less costing him the 3rd round and would have lost. This fight would still go the distance with both fighters free from injuries.

The whole fight I was thinking, why isn't Gane kicking the knees? He's an unbeaten world class elite kickboxer, and the most he did was a few taps, nothing that hard. The commentators themselves seemed to think the knee wraps indicated a possible injury too. I guess now I know why he didn't . He was told not to to avoid getting taken down in what he thought might be a trap. MMA is like chess in many ways

I am glad Fernand has brought in two grapplers from Dagestan to train with Gane!!! My biggest fear was that he would not focus on wrestling, especially with Blaydes as a potential fight. With all due respect, Lopez has two title fights losses under his belt. And both these losses were due to wrestling superiority the opposition has demonstrated. First it was Francis loss against Stipe wrestling and then Cyrial against Francis grappling. Which begs the question to the coach. What have you done to prepare your fighter for such adversity. I feel both losses are due to him failing to guide his fighters properly. Francis was training MMA for less than 5 years when he fought Stipe and Gane for less than 4 years when he fought Ngannou. It's not like you can easily build great takedown defence, it was normal for them to have that much trouble at that stage of their careers

Mr. Fernand Owonyebe has done a great job for MMA in France. He is a national treasure. His corner advice to Gane before round 5 should have been better though because Gane could have won this close fight. People need to understand that Fernand had to promote this fight because Francis didn't get any PPV shares, so he didn't care much about promoting it more than normal while Gane as the interim champ could get some 200k+... That's a big statement. Healthy Caine Velasquez is hard to surpass. Cyril has a good ways to go. DC would get him to the ground and dominate, IMO. I would have loved to see him fight Overeem a few year's back. If he fought so poorly against a very injured and gassed from the 2nd round Francis he definitely has a very long way to go. Gane will be a champion one day and Fernand is a great coach but the heel hook attempt cost him the fight. Just need to learn from it. No one should point fingers but thats lack of experience in championship rounds.. You’re trying to win the deciding round at all costs even if that means lay and pray. Fernand even said he felt it was 2 rounds even going into the 5th. Why would you heel hook attempt someone with so much time left to risk getting reversed knowing you’re opponent has been out wrestling you for the last 2 rounds. You cannot compare it with Gane’s heel hook win against Mayes because Gane was dominating all 3 rds. Even if Mayes reversed position there was only 15 seconds left to do anything. Jon Jones may be called a boring fighter at times but he knows how to win rounds and keep the belt. Gane should have just laid on him and land ground shots in half guard, even if Ngannou could get up he would have been too tired to effectively strike or take Gane down. Congrats to Ngannou for fighting through everything.

I’m glad that Fernand got away from the previous arrogant approach and admitted that he shouldn’t have even gotten close to badmouthing Ngannou on social media. If you watch the fight 20 times, you would notice that both Francis and Gane didn't pull the trigger, and it was a close fight. Gaethje looked like an amateur against Khabib and Whittman couldn't fix anything before that fight, and Gane is actually in a good place with Fernand. Let's not forget that he has only done MMA for 3 years, and could easily become a future champ...
