Top fighters used to do this in LA, they used to go through all the boxing gyms to spar. Don’t see that much anymore because everyone is taking care of their fighters. I remember seeing Nonito Domaire do that in LA way before anyone knew about him. It’s boxing at its best because everyone is trying to prove something, it’s like real boxing, real fighting.

Vargas was a great amateur fighter. I remember watching him on TV and I was very very impressed and I have seen some great amatuers going all the way back to the 84 Olympic team.

Campas had more than 1 defeat when he lost to Vargas. Vargas was his 3rd defeat he'd already lost to Tito and to JL Lopez I believe. Makes me laugh when people chat shit about Title shots for Golota because YBC had at at least 4.

It's too bad Fernando wasn't raised better. His career could've been something really special. But he was always filled with rage and it was cut short because he couldn't control himself: he conducted himself badly outside the ring; he was a poor sport; never a gentleman; and his manners were those of a peasant. I hope he's happier in his retired years.

Vargas is perfect example for being pushed to quickly. He fought Trinidad way to young but still would have beaten Trinidad for not for the 4-5 nut shots he took with Trinidad loaded gloves.

He wasn’t pushed, he went after the paychecks because he was battling a court case, plus he had that machismo ego. He wanted everything De La Hoya had now, he couldn’t wait. He had sparred with the best fighters in LA since he was a teen, he knew he belonged. Trinidad hurt him, but we know now that he has illegal wraps and that shortened Vargas’ career. Vargas would have beat Trinidad if it weren’t for the wraps. He acknowledges now as a businessman that he should have waited, but he was young and hungry and his fame and hype was growing very rapidly in the boxing world. No one pushed him.
