Fabulous animation, and what a wonderful story. The townspeople could have gone the way of punishment and revenge, but chose rehabilitation instead. A lesson still applicable today.

@FernandoGastelo15 жыл бұрын
The technique is called Rotoscope and mainly consists of recording a live background and then animating on top of it in order to give that effect. Max Fleischer created this technique. The guy was never black, he was just plain dirty. African Americans in those times were portrayed in a very different way.... 1:47 Anyways I just posted the commentary track for this cartoon so check it out

That is NOT the Rotoscope. It's the Stereoptical Process, which is displayed at the bottom of the Paramount header. The Rotoscope was Max Flesicher's first invention from 100 years ago, where live action film footage could be traced to make realistic animation. This was many times use as reference footage for enhancing action in animation, reworked to conform to the proportions of the character, and not always used as a literal tracing of the live action model. The Rotoscope was also used to define reference points to register animation and matte art for compositing animation and matte art with live action footage. You may be interested in the book, THE ART AND INVENTIONS OF MAX FLEISCHER: AMERICAN ANIMATION PIONEER. This and many of the other secrets in how these cartoons were made are explained.

I've gotta say, I've seen some old cartoons growing up, but not this one. This one has got to be one of the best with easily the best message and intentions behind it besides being a fun cartoon. The whole thing of it takes a village to raise a child basically, and how someone can do wrong but instead of outright punishment instead redeem them, and then the end with showing how greed brings misery but friendliness brings joy

Some sequences of this fantastic animation treasure are likely actual material props in front of a camera, Fleischer was a pioneer in the art of rotoscoping. The 'rotating mill is on screen' sequence and the 'duck running to town' sequence are likely props with the cartoons somehow added in later.
