It was a brilliant day on the water Phil, despite the weather. It was a bit of a steep learning curve for both of us being the first time trying a new method. And for a new species. Definitely unfinished business on Loch Awe. As you mentioned to be continued.

40 years ago I was with a shooting fishing house party in Scotland the fishing party were getting broken on fish they were trolling for salmon I said more than likely Ferox I had read up on the loch i new they were present if i remember what the gillie said at the time you tended to catch Ferox on the edge of drop offs .

Good video nice to see a good explanation of how you’re targeting them. I’ve only caught ferox when piking on Windermere had a good few when dead baiting in deep water on north basin from West Bank and a one on hard floating deep diving lure trolling going from shallows to south basin just past ferry line but I’ve been interested in giving it another go targeting them with a down rigger but not sure if I can mount one very well on a sib and also love a go for char just don’t know how best to target them other than deep and bronze spinners. But char don’t seem very big so not sure I’d notice the bites with a planer or if the elastic would release on a down rigger. Last time trolling on Windermere I did weigh a soft lure down with leads for the first time on long wire trace about a meter long to give a bit of space. Soft lures seem to get pulled up in the water easy from my experience. Not a planer but it worked pretty well and got a 10 pound pike on a 32cm realistic pike lure. Only issue was when i went through the shallows and caught a bloke feeder fishing 😂 he didn’t look impressed. Never really had bigger pike than 10lb out of Windermere but all the ferox have been 8-12lb and very hard fighting

Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to share your experiences with the Ferox. You've certainly had some wonderful catches at Lake Windermere. I'm sure you'll find a method of mounting a down rigger on the SIB - perhaps a wooden beam across the SIB between the lifting handles? In the Scottish lochs a popular way to target the Char is casting from the bank into deeper (30 or 40 foot) water using a maggot feeder. I've not seen any large Char caught just small ones. I fished Lake Bala in North Wales many many years ago catching my PB Pike of 17.5 lbs. It's my aim to better that one day. Do let us know how you get on with down rigging and a SIB. Phil

You can spend hours trolling for these ferox, would have been a miracle to capture one first time out. There will be a next time - but Douglas will select a fine weather day (No pressure Douglas)

Plenty of Ferox generally in Ireland in the lochs in my experience.

Thanks Mark, now that would make an exciting trip to tow the boat across to Ireland. It must be 40 years since I fished Ireland - Upper Loch Earn and that was coarse fishing.

You want worse weather not better, most of the big ferox have been caught in bad wind. The weather you had in the video is pretty average for loch Awe and i would not go out with any less wind even when fishing for normal size Browns. The present record was caught in much worse wind, even i abandoned fishing by lunch time that day.

Graham, thank you for commenting and advising about the 'ideal' weather conditions. It would appear Douglas should allow me to select the days after all. I've fished loch Awe several times in the past and on most days it has be lumpy. It can certainly build the waves along such a long loch. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks again for the advice.
