My response to all the negative comments. I think you took a scientific and compassionate approach. You used what you knew about each animal and in a controlled environment you introduced them. You understood the personalities of each ferret and monitored them and intervened when necessary. In the end your experiment was successful. They seem to be adapting to each other very well. I would love to see a follow up of their progress.

You'd be surprised how ferocious ferrets are, they can easily take down prey bigger than themselves - they are much more efficient hunters and killers than even cats, which says a lot.

The least weasel is tiny (about 7 inches long and 1.7 oz.) but can take down hares and rabbits that are 4-5 times larger than it is. Biologist believe that if there were 60 pound weasels, there would be no larger mammalian life on the planet. A cat would probably get 1 chance to ambush a weasel in order to kill it, and if it doesn't get it right behind it head (in order to sever its spine) or by the throat (to suffocate it), the weasel will definately kill the cat.

l a m b s a u c e Depends on the Cat. Back in the 1990s, when I owned two ferrets, I watched them interact with a bunch of different cats. Some of the cats ran for their lives when the ferrets attempted to make contact (The Ferrets would chase them which was hilarious) The tougher cats (the type to kill rats, birds, etc) would sit and look curiously at the ferrets from a short distance, but if the ferrets cramped their space they would back up a few feet. Never witnessed any Cat on Ferret aggression.

Good going! I've been raising cats and ferrets alongside each other for over thirty years, and sometimes it works, sometimes not-- it depends on each individual critter. My older cat, Spot, has disliked ferrets for all of her 14 years-- she hisses at them and takes the occasional clawless swipe if they come too close; on the other hand, my 8 1/2 month old kitten, Gray, loves them and actively seeks them out; he sits outside the door to their room and whines until I let him in to play. All five will chase him, let him chase them, wrestle with him and play Monster-In-The-Paper-Bag as often as I'll let them. So best of luck with your little beauties-- may they have many long years together!

You're very welcome! I do have to warn you that sooner or later there'll probably be at least a handful of who's-the-boss confrontations between them; but ferrets don't fight to kill, as I'm sure you already know-- they work out who's boss with the whole scruff of the neck thing. So expect a few yowls! But they'll figure things out between them sooner or later, and then the kitten will become one of the ferrets' minions and all will be well. ^_^

I've seen other situations with both species. Before there were ferrets, the cats would sleep all day, then run around making noise all night. The ferrets changed all that. They doggedly pursued the cats, who were worn out when it was time for the humans to sleep. Ferrets do not play by cat rules; they don't take a hint [hiss] that they've had enough. They keep coming. They're relentless. The only refuge the cats had were higher places that required jumping.

My boys (ferrets) absolutely love my cat they will tease her and play fight with her, Leroy even tries to cuddle with her and will literally crawl really slowly toward her so she doesn’t “attack” him and he’ll just lay as close as he can get to her

I used to have a ferret. He spent about 6 years of his life being a solo pet. Then I got a female baby ferret. He was not happy about the "intruder" in his territory. Initially, I had to keep them in separate cages, because the big guy was super aggressive to her and tried to "kidnap" her or choke her or something. She grew up quickly and started to initiate playtime with him. He was rejecting her at first. After about 2 weeks of hard work of keeping them in peace, they not only learned to cohabit but also always slept together in a cuddle in the same beds. They became literally like a brother and sister. To summarize, don't give people who criticize you the time of day, they don't understand the patience and worry it sometimes takes to have pets (especially of different species) live together peacefully. This process was necessary.

I had same experience my end up bad they almost killed each other, and it was two girls! Needed to gave the new one to my friend because otherwise they would need to live in cage which my first one was just like nope she doesn't live in cage for 3 years and I will never let her be in cage because of another ferret, year later I had chance to have foster ferret for a while and they became best buddies no bitting, not fighting nothing they were like one (without kidding) I was happy, but in the end because of new ferrets heart she passed away after 8months 😭😭😭

You got lucky that the initial attack by the ferret was just the one-time thing. It always puts me on edge when pet owners introduce a new animal to several animals at once. As I understand it, you should always introduce a new cat to your pets at home on a one-on-one basis, because that ensures that the new cat or the other animals don't feel overwhelmed, potentially getting so stressed that an attack leading to injury occurs. All's well that ends well I guess, and either way, congrats on the new (I know I'm over a year late, but w/e) cat!

I had a ferret and two cats, she tried to kill both. I'm dead serious, she tried to bite down on their backs and pull up. We separated them after the first time it happened. She was one of the sweetest animals I knew, I even brought her to my elementary class once and she just chilled in my arms the whole time. But she had a real problem with the cats, and she was fixed.

Welcome :) I’m thinking about getting a ferret myself, but bit confused about feeding them. Some say only raw meat, some other say only dry food, but when I read ingredients it contains weet which isn’t so good for them.. some people say enrich their diet with fruits.. So not sure what’s best for them.. And I wonder where to get one, I read that the ones from shop might be sick, but then private breeders often teach them to haunt and I want a sweet, loving pet like your ones... Any advice, please?

Nena N Those are great questions! Ferrets can eat raw and kibble it doesn’t have to be either one. Mine don’t eat raw meat though and you do have to train them to eat it unless they were brought up on it. As for the fruit I STRONGLY advise you not to feed it to ferrets and that goes for vegetables too. They are strict carnivores so fruits and vegetables will harm there digestive systems and cause health problems. That being said there food can be very expensive. For the wheat it isn’t the best for them but it makes there food even more expensive to buy it without it so you gotta do what you gotta do. As for where to buy ferrets, pet stores are definitely not the best place to buy them because there’s a strong chance they will grow up having health problems and adrenal disease. All of mine have adrenal disease and one has cancer. So you can only imagine there vet bills are very expensive. If I had the choice I would buy them from a breeder and if not then a ferret rescue like I did. I know this is a lot of information I just wish I knew all of this before I bought mine because they definitely are a handful and expensive to care for. Jer Asoy incorrect actually, weasels are known for killing a variety of critters including hawks and eagles. Everything small enough to be killed is concerned food for weasels. Despite their cuteness, weasels are some of the most feared animals in the animal kingdom (feared by other animals in the area that is). They are known for being extremely aggressive and determined when it comes to hunting down their food and they are very capable killers.

Cats and ferrets make great companions! I assure you that the ferret was not being aggressive to the kitten. They love to play and challenge others to join in and that is how they decide if you are a friend or foe. If they join in, they are a friend. If they do not, then they begin to show more dominance and/or sometimes aggressive behavior. By nature they are curious and playful. However, they are also great hunters and will kill birds and other small animals that are their natural prey. This is instinctual and is NOT something that is their fault or can be trained out of them.

Kathleen Beveridge The one that was more aggressive is the more dominant ferret of the group. She will chase Nyla (my kitten) out of the room and I can’t leave them alone or else they bite each others necks pretty hard. We’ve also had mouse problems where they sneak into the ferrets cage for food and the ferrets don’t do anything about it. I think my ferrets are broken lol.
