Something you might want to try, is to “paint” the lathe with many thin layers. Just paint it with gravy mortar, let it almost dry, then “repaint” it again and again until it’s strong enough to take thicker layers…

@@waltdoyleprojects3544 When you say "paint" it, are you meaning using a brush? That probably would work... I've also considered "spraying" it like shotcrete, which would go real fast, I just haven't figured that1 out yet... another strategy some use is to just kinda throw on the first really wet/sticky batch, which I do occasionally... but yeah, painting the lath with a thin wet batch would help successive layers to stick if it dries partially 👍

@@ogfoundation something interesting to try is to mix mortar using 1/2 the water normally used and use latex paint as the rest of the liquid. Mix with a drill quite fast and it whips up like whipped cream. Paint that on and see how fast it covers the mesh. Then sprinkle dry mortar on the wet “paint”. Very filling and water proof.
