Could you make your own ferro fluid by collecting all the metal crud that builds up in an angle grinder safety guard, then putting it in a mortar and pestle to get it back to a fine powder, then put it in a jar with some very thin oil? That way you'd have small metallic pieces suspended in a liquid, which not only allows free movement, but also should protect the metallic pieces from oxidation.

Why are they cones? Reminds me of the small cone like structures on the wings of scarabs. Which cause them to levitate because they are too heavy and not aerodynamic enough to achieve proper flight. Same as a honey bee. Very interesting indeed. Also the curious case of coral castle. Ed Leedskanlin was supposedly seen using cone like objects to levitate the huge blocks of limestone into position. Very very interesting.
