Fantastic! Very useful as I’m in the process of designing a very similar cabinet.

Awesome, thanks for sharing this. Having the product numbers here is a big help! I bought a couple sysports. Nice work.

Your welcome, and thank you for watching. I think the whole systainer and sysport system is going to make a huge difference to organisation and workflow in the workshop. That will be worth its weight in gold.

Thank you for your quick reply. I will SYS storage cabinets to the left and right side of toy Kapex (there are a good number of videos that I used as a model... mostly Jay Bates). I have quite a bit more SYSs to contend with; however, I will also incorporate drawers into the build as well. I have a concept hand drawing that I can email a copy of to you if you would like. Again, thank you for your quick reply. Cheers

Excellent video sir. I'm looking to build my own sysport and this is good alternative.
@TheWoodgrafter6 жыл бұрын
Yes I looked at the Festool sysport, it looks good but I wanted the ability to maximise the space, and when you couple that with the price it becomes a no brainier to design and build your own. Let me know how you get on, and please feel free to ask any questions.

Where the top overhangs the face of the cabinet, does that impact on the top row of systainers lids opening fully?
@TheWoodgrafter6 жыл бұрын
+Parafinn Lamp, good spot - that turned out to be a bad decision (form over function) later in the series I reduce the overhang to about 5mm for exactly the reasons you have spotted. Thank you for the comments and the observation. Cheers Andy

Toolboxes, such as systainers, are good for transporting tools and fixings, and using them on site. For storage in a workshop, they are the worst possible choice. In order- Pegboard or shelf- one touch access. Best. Drawer- three touch access (pull, pick, push) Most toolboxes - five touch access (pull, open, pick, close, push) Systainers - seven touch (pull, unlock, open, pick, close, lock, push). Worst, because the swinging lever fouls the drawer slider above it if not locked. Most others can be left unlocked. They are also smaller than most, so more wasted space around them and more to open. No front handle, so the slider needs a handle. If you are not happy with open storage, use drawers that are as wide and deep as possible, to give maximum contents. Height to match the contents. Can be made to EXACTLY fit the space available, e.g. under a bench. With no gaps to harbour dust. Too much trouble to move tools when going on site? I keep a single toolbox (carefully) fitted with the common tools which are duplicates. These cost less than a collection of systainers, and means I have a spare if anything fails.Moving special tools to a box takes less time than fishing for them in the workshop. Remember, a site and a workshop are totally different. In a workshop you want everything you use as close as possible and as accessible as possible. The more effort there is to get a tool, the less chance of putting it away, so they all accumulate on the work surface and everything slows down...

Hi Mike, Get where you are coming from, but everyone is different - I like systainer storage in the shop. Keeps the tools protected and everything in its place. I am very disciplined when it comes to putting things away, and keeping things organised. I agree that drawers are more efficient and better use of space - but not enough for me to care or notice the impact on workflow. The storage under the new bench will be drawers with dividers and layout for my hand tools and measuring gear. But not sure I will be giving up the sysport any times soon. Cheers Andy

@@TheWoodgrafter I understand why you like them- they look pretty. It is like domestic kitchens- smooth granite, clean lines, everything hidden. Totally unlike a commercial kitchen, where efficiency and functionality are prioritized. So the question is simple- do you want a pretty workshop or a functional one? Time spent retrieving and storing tools in fiddly boxes is time not spent making. They cost you time, money, and workshop space. Your new build is moving in the right direction- embrace rationality and go all the way!

Mike M Hi Mike, let’s agree to disagree on this one, I want (and have) both. The system I have works for me and fits in with my workflow and space. Don’t forget I am turning out low volume high value pieces with the shop window been on you tube and web site with people visiting the shop to talk about commissions. In effect I invite people into my space (physically and virtually) to see my process and methods - nothing to hide. So for me it has to be a combination of workflow and attractive workshop. That’s why the walls are clad, that’s why it gets cleaned at the end of every day and why the tools are laid out in a rack of systainers. Even when I build the drawers under the bench, they will be lined in foam with cut out for each tool. Not disputing what you are saying, just different solution for different problems. Cheers Andy

If you have the depth available you can make deeper drawers, use longer drawer slides, and add a storage section at the back where you can drop in a plywood storage box the same height as the systainer in that drawer. In my case I will be making the base cupboards 580mm deep to make efficient use of sheets and 550mm runners with 570mm drawers. My 2 cents
@TheWoodgrafter4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, That is a simple but brilliant idea. Thank you for sharing. I have some more modules planed for the workshop after the workbench build - focusing on the Kapex, The CMS etc They will all have more systainer storage - so will incorporate. Cheers Andy

Excellent design together with a very entertaining video. I enjoyed it. One question, the bottom drawer is mounted in the first 5mm set of holes from the bottom. It's done like that in all sections. How long are your screws? Is there enough thickness to have screws going from each side into the dividing vertical side panels?
@TheWoodgrafter5 жыл бұрын
+Wojtek T Hi and thank you for the feedback. You are correct, ideally you would use 8mm long screws to avoid that very problem. From memory I had 12mm long screws so couldn’t use them in the same hole. I alternated them so the runners lined up. Used the front hole on one of them, and then the rear hole on the next one. Then picked up a convienent mounting and used a standard wood screw to secure. Hope that makes sense. Cheers Andy

Hi just discovered your channel. Great stuff mate. A few questions: what is the resaw capacity of your bandsaw. How big is it? IE height, width, length. How wide a board can your jointer/planer handle. What is its overall height, width and length. Thanks

+John Eagles Hi John, glad you like the channel. I haven’t got the bandsaw or jointer/planner as yet. Still building up the tool collection. I really need the planet/jointer now though. But this the jointer/planner I will be getting www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-trade-series-at107pt-planer-thicknesser-spiral-cutters-230v-101156 This is the bandsaw I will be getting www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-trade-series-bs11-inv-bandsaw-508476 Of course we will have the unboxing, set up and review videos as and when. Thanks for the feedback Talk soon Andy

Hi Bob, This was a long time ago and haven’t used Sketchup for years. From memory I imported them from the Sketchup 3D library. I can’t remember the process now, but check out this link as a starting point. 3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/?hl=en Cheers Andy
