Ohhhh, the fetal monitoring is read from the back of the infant! Makes sense when the baby is in a vertex position. I didn’t make that connection at first 🤦🏾♀️

Is placing the internal FHR monitor a nursing skill or is it something you would call the provider to do?
@NLTOKAKES3 жыл бұрын

Would placenta previa be another contraindication for the internal fetal monitoring? Would internal fetal monitoring be avoided if they are having a C-section?
@LevelUpRN2 жыл бұрын
Great question! A patient with a _planned_ C-section would likely not have internal fetal monitoring. It would be more likely that internal monitoring would be going on for a planned vaginal delivery, and then the decision to have a C-section would be made later due to non-reassuring FHR patterns or other signs of fetal distress, failure to progress, etc. Placenta previa could absolutely be a contraindication, depending on the specific location of the placenta. In almost all cases, though, a patient with placenta previa would require a planned C-section!

My text says the tocometer only measures duration and frequency not intensity of contractions. They are also calling it a toco transducer or tocodymamometer. I’m assuming it’s the same thing?
@LevelUpRN Жыл бұрын
That's so interesting--a tocodynamometer (or tocometer/toco) measures the duration, frequency, and strength/intensity of contractions (which is measured in mmHg). That is how we are able to monitor for complications to medications such as pitocin. You can read more about it here! www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx?contenttypeid=92&contentid=P07776#:~:text=A%20pressure%2Dsensitive%20device%20called,and%20strength%20of%20uterine%20contractions. --Meris :)
