I went on the Dr. Phil show to talk about being ex-religious, and I’ve got THOUGHTS! After a quick rundown of my experience (plus responding to all the drama from those who are upset I even went on), we dive into this month’s campfire chat. We’re tackling tough questions like, 'What should I do if I realize I’m in a toxic marriage?' and 'How do I handle feeling like the token ex-Mormon in my friend group?' It’s a fiery one, so grab a seat by the campfire!

Jesse Hildebrandt lives in Berlin now. I would love to see Girls Camp & Jesse walk around Berlin & talk all things Mormon/post Mormon.

I loved what you had to say about the atonement. I have LDS family that always go to the atonement to justify why they’re still faithful and it’s their foundation. Thanks for sharing all your thoughts.

I just want to say I’m a conservative Christian and I listen to your podcast! I’m not Mormon and never even been Mormon and super firm in my faith haha! but I love hearing your thoughts and the way you deconstruct things! Some conservative Christian’s do listen to you not all of them but I think it’s good to open up the conversation like you’ve done 🫶🏻

I listened to the Dr. Phil episode and I thought you were great. A book you may find interesting as part of your faith deconstruction (and reconstruction) is by Bernardo Kastrup, "More Than Allegory: On religious myth, truth, and belief." Kastrup's work in general is profound and important.

This is always the question I have when people leave the church. Whether done by excommunication or voluntarily, where do people go? Do they go to another religion or Christian denomination? Do they become atheist or agnostic? Is there a happy life after leaving the LDS church? How is the marriage affected? Does the extended family stigmatize the person who leaves. Anyways, I look forward to seeing the show.

It varies in difficulty and results. My partner left first, is atheist, and is certainly happier out of it. They have always been a bit on the outside of their LDS and other (Christian) family due to a value on facts and science and authenticity. I was the ‘nephi’ in my family. However the mental gymnastics involved to stay, the hurt caused(historically and current at the time)and the lack of inclusion, was too much. (Been oot aboot 9 years now, and life is better for me too on the outside, it takes time to heal) My ego wanted to be Ex’ed (not to suggest that is the case for others) but I didn’t want my kids or any future generations having my membership as a selling point for the church. I didn’t want my name associated with racism, misogyny, LGBTQA2+persecution, child abuse, etc (when I did still believe, I felt women should have the priesthood and same sex couples should be able to be sealed in the temple, and that the priesthood ban was wrong and should have been acknowledged as such). My belief in god and Jesus was my only real supernatural belief, I had some good time to think and reflect on my ‘spiritual experiences’, and was able to determine my belief was very much the result of human nature and my ego and a desire for the church to be true, and of course all the trappings found in a high demand, high control group. I am basically agnostic with strong atheist leanings. I did have concerns about finding ‘a tribe’ or group after leavingBut also didn’t want to be performative or obligated. It is lonely, but the peace of mind gained, the clarity of thought, and self acceptance are more than worth the trade off for me. (While I don’t have close friends, my online D&D group is better company and better time spent than church)

My partner and I became agnostic. We have traveled all over and have seen things that foster our belief of a higher power but do not believe any one human based religion has it figured out. I am embracing that there is beauty in the unknown and that loving others and being a good person is best when it’s not propagated by fear.

My marriage is better than ever! My husband falls on the atheist/humanist spectrum, and I have found great joy in my own earth-based spirtuality Neither of us are religious. We have a robust community of friends, neighbors and family and love to serve in our local community. Life is SO happy outside of mormonism- I feel so much lighter and excited about life. We had a year or two where family relationships were strained, but once they spent enough time with us to see that we are good people living good lives, and that we weren't out to drag them down to the pits of hell, they've really started to act nicer to us again.

So you're Grammy passed. My condolences. I'm glad it wasn't a shock. Grief may take a while, in many stages and degrees. What you valued in her and your relationship with her will stay with you for life. 🖤

Dr. Phil doesn’t do the paternity test thing as often as Jerry, but he absolutely has done several DNA and paternity episodes.

Au pairing can be such a good opportunity but you are also in the hands of another family and it can create weird situations if the family does not have your wellbeing as their priority. So do it! but be careful who you choose :)

@@Mathewmartialart I think @preachercaine is pointing out that the correct past tense is in fact - cast. "Casted" is commonly used but grammatically incorrect. However, language evolves overtime and in the future "casted" may become the preferred usage due to popularity.
