Aslam O Alekum dear students, welcome to my KZbin channel @Ziatutorials. In this section of video you will learn the basic concepts of fever or pyrexia, its mechanisms, advantages and disadvantages.
Mechanism of Fever (Pyrexia):
1. _Infection or inflammation_: Pathogens or inflammatory mediators trigger the release of pyrogens (fever-inducing substances).
2. _Pyrogen binding_: Pyrogens bind to specific receptors in the hypothalamus, stimulating the production of prostaglandins.
3. _Prostaglandin action_: Prostaglandins increase the hypothalamic set point, causing the body temperature to rise.
4. _Heat generation_: The body generates heat through increased metabolic rate, shivering, and vasoconstriction.
Advantages of Fever:
1. _Inhibits pathogen growth_: Elevated temperatures can inhibit the growth and reproduction of some pathogens.
2. _Enhances immune response_: Fever can stimulate the immune system, increasing the production of white blood cells and activating immune cells.
3. _Increases antibiotic effectiveness_: Some antibiotics work more effectively at elevated temperatures.
Disadvantages of Fever:
1. _Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance_: Excessive sweating can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
2. _Hypoxia and organ damage_: High fever can cause hypoxia (oxygen deficiency) and damage to organs like the brain, heart, and kidneys.
3. _Seizures and neurological symptoms_: Fever can cause seizures, especially in children, and other neurological symptoms like confusion and disorientation.
4. _Cardiovascular strain_: Fever can increase heart rate and blood pressure, straining the cardiovascular system.
5. _Malaise and discomfort_: Fever can cause general malaise, fatigue, and discomfort, affecting daily activities.
It's essential to note that while fever can be beneficial in fighting infections, extremely high temperatures (above 103°F/39.4°C) can be harmful and require medical attention.
