The garden is show casing feverfew this week. (Chrysanthemum Parthenium)
This is a plant that I’ve been very excited about growing and harvesting this year. It’s said to help with migraines, and I have two family members who struggle with migraines. Studies done on feverfew have shown that it helped some, but not all. I’m hoping that feverfew may be that natural plant that could help.
It contains parthenolide, which is an anti inflammatory. Some of it’s other potential uses is for pain relief, improving rosacea, elevating mood and also has anti cancer affects.
Always remember that there may be possible side effects to any medicinal her, but it’s not just a plan, it’s medicine.
Today we are harvesting feverfew’s flowers, leaves and stems.
When we cut, we are leaving about 6” of the plant and foliage, so it can continue to grow and flower again before the end of the season. Then we will be able to cut from it a second time. They have a unique smell, not my favorite, but there are too many benefits that this plant provides to pass it up.
There are many ways to dry your herbs. You can hang them, dehydrate them, put them in the oven on low heat. We love using these large hanging herb driers. When we place the herbs in, we spread them out so they don’t get moldy. Always store and dry feverfew and other herbs in a cool, dry and dark area of your home.

Do not take this if you are pregnant, if you have bleeding disorders or within 2 weeks of having surgery. I just wanted to add this because there is solid medical evidence about it and as a nurse practitioner, I thought it may help. Great video as always!!

These are a powerhouse as a medicinal herb. I have been growing these for 35 years. I brought one plant with me when we moved to a new area and wow. Not only can you harvest for bouquets, I harvest flower heads, stems and leaves, hang upside down dry. You can hang them in a warm room, laundry rooms work great or I hand them in my greenhouse. Then grind in my spice grinder. Fill capsules and we take it for allergies, migraines, to help lower blood sugar, blood thinner, helps protect skin from harmful UV's, regulates cholesterol and helps prevent cancer. I cut back all the plants at the end of July for one more harvest before our first hard freeze.

It also work on menstrual cramp and regulating menstrual cycle. Hard to drink as a tea because the flavor is not the most enjoyable. But worth the sacrifice for the benefits.

Feverfew for people with migraines is best taken on a regular basis, as it is more preventative measure, then an active solution.

I'm on Eliquis to prevent blood clots from being diagnosed withafib. So I don't believe I can use this? I'd love to though since it's 100% natural. I'd have to ask my EP to research it since he isn't schooled in homeopathic natural alternatives

dry it in teas, or capsules, that’s how we are going to try it this fall/winter once it’s dry and we have time to tinker.

It grows wild here on the Prarie. I have some dehydrating now. Do you just make a tea out of it? I have so much pain and inflammation, wonder if it would work for that.

Yes you make tea with it, but it is a little bitter, but the health benefits make it worth it! We’re going to try it in teas and in capsules this fall and winter

What kind of results have you seen with migraine headaches while using feverfew?
@TheLawrenceGardenFarm
@TheLawrenceGardenFarm Жыл бұрын
Jason’s mom didn’t use it consistently. So I really can’t claim yea or no. It’s definitely not like popping an advil, instant results, with herbs it’s always gradual. It is more bitter in flavor, but a leaf a day is what you are suppose to consume in order to see results. Sorry I don’t have more of an exact answer for you🌿
