Few electric vehicles still qualify for $7,500 tax credit

Only a handful of electric vehicles still qualify for the full $7,500 clean vehicle federal tax credit, according to new reporting from tech website The Verge. Andrew Hawkins, a transportation editor for The Verge, joined CBS News to discuss why many EVs aren't saving their buyers money around tax season anymore.

Why aren't any of the necessary components purchased from these rouge countries being produced here in America? Cause of greed. Companies will not pay a standard fair wage, nor will they want to take the necessary environmental protections we require to manufacture in America. Offshoring of American manufacturing will continue to be the norm until we as consumers speak with our wallets. Buy from companies that share your values.

yes and no....that's just one reason. one. we mine in USA, but the area of mining to civilization is disproportionate,too many people, most out of country mining takes place faw away from civilization or just uproots mini tribes...good luck doing that in america. 2. you surely must be aware that not everywhere has the same amount of everything in the same depth if at all right? some material we might not even have in the usa,another we do but very little and it's too deep. there's more than just cheap labor involved.

Chinese automaker Geely Automotive owns Volvo, which will introduce the Chinese rebranded Volvo XC30. As a carrot for Sweden joining NATO, they don't have tariffs on their products to the US. In addition, European legacy automakers will be making their vehicles in China as well by partnering with Chinese companies on software technology. China has surpassed Japan as the largest exporter of vehicles in 2023 and 2024. As for BYD, they are already making buses and trucks in California. Tesla is already lowering the price of their vehicles which will make the $7500 credit moot. In addition, some states have more generous rebates than the federal government.

A car is not an investment, never has been. Somehow we were sold EV tax credits as a green infrastructure investment. Say the life of an EV at 10 years, the US gives tens billions in tax credits for a consumer good that will likely only provide 10 years of benefit and then become trash. Somehow these credits were supposed to kick-off a new American industry. What the industry is telling us, is demand isn't there even with the tax credits. There was never sound economics or environmental benefits behind this legislation. It was to create consumer spending and boost GDP, that's it.
