I don't care what any wannabe says, but Sir Galway is one of the greatest flutist of all time. When you "critics" reach his level of performance, then comment. Other STHU!! OMG. He's such a joy to see perform live. I've also attended a few masterclasses. He told me I have a beautiful sound and very music musical. 😥😥😥❤❤❤

so beautifully expressed on the flute...sir galway is very unique in his tone which makes everything beautiful anyway. this is a favorite piece of mine, especially as i am in my 31st year as schubert was in his final...

About the vibrato issue: 1. Teachers insist that students should not play with a big vibrato, and for good reason: they do it incorrectly, and the resulting sound is unattractive. James Galway can do it so well because he has tremendous lung capacity; his deep and rapid river of air easily produces a good vibration. Students tend to use a vibration of the throat muscles or the cheeks or something else to imitate vibrato, and it sounds bad. 2. Vibrato is a matter of taste. Baroque players have, since I guess about the 1970s with the revival of historically accurate performance practice, preferred to eliminate vibrato, not only in flute but string instruments. The result is quite beautiful and has become standard. A lot of singing now does away with vibrato; the great a cappella groups Take 6 and Chanticleer are famous for their pure tones without vibrato, which makes their close harmonies super clear. James Galway is a soloist who, in my view, takes as his standard the great opera singers. This is appropriate, because like a great singer he stands alone before an orchestra and his sound carries over everything, over all the instruments, and reaches every listener in every row in the audience. He also emphasizes the emotions of each piece of music, whether light or heavy, and like most good players and singers, the speed of the vibrato differs depending on the mood. 3. I have always found his vibrato bewitching. He uses far less in baroque and far more in romantic. I think flutists like to nitpick in order to crow about something. But flutists don't really have the last word; audiences do, and around the world people have been eager to listen to Sir James over and over. Can't really argue against that.

THE vibration is expression of soul. If its not there its like a Bolivian flutist playing "El condor pasa" without it. It will sound dry and cold. The vibrato must emerge naturally. I play the flute too and everyone got emotioned by my vibrato. I do it at breathing deeply and effortlessly.

@@chrismoffitt The man is now dead , he was Charles Acton of the Irish Times. On one occasion Jimmy dedicated his encore to the empty chair which Chas had vacated...he referred to him as ''his good friend'' , which he probably was, and he was a huge admirer of Galway. The concert was in Trinity College Dublin....Ireland is a small place!

Tom Greene ok. Sorry / did I misinterpret? Or was it a thing between them??? Once at a major symphonic event, a lady was gushing at the flute soloist and telling him “You’re as good as Galway,”. to which the reply was, “ Well I certainly hope so.” I did snicker as I turned away - he glared at me for quite some time. Have heard MANY a performer (do we say flutist now or still flautist??). Never EVER have I heard the dulcet (is that an appropriate word?) tones he can get a flute to sing. Am a not so great, but not mediocre player... have practiced in the shower for hours, listening to his more popular recordings on vinyl of course, and playing by ear. Dang, the acoustics make me sound great! But there just is no one who can come close to this Irish king of music. Would SO love to hear him as you have but not holding my breath (and certainly would not want him to hear ME 🙄). Do you play professionally????

Sort of a cello sized BOWED guitar, with frets. Believe it or not, a few intrepid souls have played this sonata on Arpeggiones, either genuine 19th century antiques or modern reproductions. My own opinion on this authenticity? Sounds thin. The upper notes always sound slightly out of tune because of the frets. What is the difference between an Arpeggione and a bushel of onions? Nobody cries when you chop up the Arpeggione.
