This was a huge moment in WoW's history. Varok Saurfang was a literal icon from the very beginning of WoW's history. He was always on the front lines of the big events there, the elder General who was directing the assaults. He was one of the few remaining first generation that came through the Dark Portal in the original orc invasion of Azeroth. We got to see him lead heroic charges, took orders from him. We got to experience the loss of his son to the Lich King, and then take down his son's reanimated body. We all grieved with him. He sought an honorable death, and he found one here. He gave his life in Mak'gora (honorable 1v1 duel for leadership) to show the loyalists of Sylvanas that she doesn't care about them. He exposed her and reclaimed not only his own honor, but the honor of the entire Horde. This cinematic marked the end of an era for more than half of the entire player base. Since the very beginning the Horde has had a warchief. With Saurfang's death, it changed to a council system with representatives from each race of the Horde. Saurfang's death brought a sort of republic to the Horde, rather than a dictatorship.

Why this doesn't have more likes I don't know. I think this comment should be pinned at the top honestly. My time with the Warcraft franchise goes all the way back to the very first warcraft game. When 3 came out a novel also came out about Thrall's beginnings and I had mad respect for what he tried to make of the Horde. I was not a fan of any of the other leaders after Thrall left too much, but Varok redeemed a lot of that when going through this storyline. He is only the second to gain as much respect for me as Thrall, through his pain he had much honor.

Definitly one of the best cinematics Blizzard has ever done. The thing was Saurfang was branded a traitor by Silvanas. And while many didnt agree with her they still followed her. The beginning shot is basically Saurfang stating the sad state that they basically attack they're own capital. But instead of an full assault where many people died and in the worst case strenghening silvanas grasp on the Horde. Saurfang wanted to show the people that to Silvanas they mean nothing and are just pawns in her (well not really as we learn in shadowlands) game. If you remember the "Old Soldier" Cinematic Saurfang wanted to have an Honorable death. Which he feared he wouldnt get because of what happened at Teldrasil. So the HUGE redemption for him was that, in the end, he was given his honorable Death by "freeing" the Horde of Silvanas. That is underlined by the last shot where they knock their banners on the Ground as an Salute of a fallen Hero. Great video btw hope u continue to enjoy your Journey and so long :)

In many ways this reminds me of Grom's death, he commited far too many atrocities for his death in combat to be honorable by itself and he had to die fighting for the freedom of all his people. There are other personalities reacting to WoW cinematics laced with old references and rich lore without the familiarity for it to land as hard as it would otherwise. The BfA Warbringers series and the BfA war campaign cinematics and cut scenes are amongst the most well composed, executed, and powerful in gaming history, they're strong in the world of fiction in general. There is so much going on in these that it's unfair to expect anyone who wasn't into the world to be pounded with the feels-hammer as hard as the rest of us. "Mak'gora" meaning "duel of honor" is essentially a challenge to combat (sometimes to the death) to obtain something (meaning if Varok won for example there would be no war and they will win the city back) and generally using anything other than your weapons (magic, poison etc) is considered cheating.
@dwarfminerwillie4 жыл бұрын
Actually the last part isn't quite true, Mak'gora's are actually quite varied depending on who organizes it. There have been multiple matches where magic was used and no fuss was raised about it so essentially if the one being challenged doesn't want magic to be used he has to stipulate that as a rule in the match, you can even decide weather or not your allowed to wear armor or not.
@zZSleepytimeZz4 жыл бұрын
General mak'gora rules would say 3 weapons are allowed (using magic/poison would be counted as a weapon, sometimes even diffrent schools of magic can be counted as multiple weapons). There has been a few Mak’Goras in the history of the game and even movie. Ones I can think of are Thrall (black hair orc) vs Garrosh (A young orc that was full of himself before the Lich King invades), Garrosh vs Cairne Bloodhoof (the leader of the Tauren, who was killed by poison on Garrosh’s axe that Garrosh did not know of), Thrall vs Garrosh v2 (at this time Garrosh had gone mad with power, and this is debatably when Thrall lost his Shaman powers by killing his former student), and a few others from prior times. There is no higher dishonor to an Orc than to cheat in a Mak’Gora, and depending on the situation certain magics can be seen as a cheating device, usually fel or in Sylvanas’s case, dark/death magic.
@gonzalonavarro95844 жыл бұрын
That's not true. There's no rules in Mak'gora unless the participants set the rules before the fight. Thrall used his elemental powers against Garrosh and is not considered cheating, because that's how shamans fight. Imagine beeing a Warchief mage fighting against a warrior orc who has trained all his life to fight in close combat with weapons. If you pay attention, Sylvanas is using dark magic in her daggers and nobody said a word.. because everyone knows she uses that kind of magic. The missunderstanding of the Mak'gora happens because people takes the Warcraft Movie as refference, but the movie isn't 100% canon, even the wow developers said it. The Garrosh vs Cairne mak'gora was considered cheating because warriors don't use poison in their weapons (is not their way, they like to fight clean and fair) and the poison used belong to a 3rd person (Magatha)
@Zidzyz4 жыл бұрын
@@gonzalonavarro9584 Read my comment again? I didn’t say all magic is not allowed, only specific types, possibly because the way it is obtained. Shaman magic is obtained through asking the aid of the elements, while dark Magic’s is usually taken by force or by giving something in return to the powers source (usually harming others). For example Sylvanas’s magic and Fel magic come from other sources and not from themselves, just like how the poison came from someone else in Garrosh’s case. Sylvanas from the Jailor and Fel Magic from demons. Why do you think warlocks are constantly looked down in in every part of lore by orcs? It’s considered dishonorable. If you think that tribal society based completely on Honor allows the most dishonorable magic in one of their most important rituals you’re dead wrong. And even Cairne in the books states that Mak’Gora has rules and Garrosh didn’t understand them. You had to state what weapons and armor are allowed, and other things of the sort. Seeing as how Sylvanas and Saurfang both had 2 weapons and full armor that would have been considered a fair Mak’Gora, but then Sylvanas introduced another weapon (and possibly armor? Idk if the Jailers powers can provide any type of magical defense). The rules and traditions are all stated by Cairne in The Shattering

@@juggnuttz and the thing you linked only speaks of shamanistic powers specifically of Thrall and other shamans that lead the horde. It’s a power that is known to not be of this world so it’s rejected historically by the Orcs based on their history and now view that it lacks honor. Now tell me they would let you use that in the Mak’Gora which literally translates to Duel of Honor. It was sad to see Varok Saurfang die but sadder still getting to know his pain the last few videos. For the first bit of the game he was just a meme really as he was a main guard on the way to kill Thrall if you were Alliance (back then raiding cities to take out the racial leaders was a popular thing, particularly on PVP servers). The comment the troll kid makes in old soldier about his father telling tales of Saurfang killing 10 men in a single cleave are...true. His warrior 'cleave' ability was instant death to a lot of people on those raids. In the first WOW expac, The Burning Legion, we discovered he had a son left on Outland (broken Draenor, where Saurfang finds Thrall in the last video) and in Wrath of the Lich King, said son is killed by the Lich King (and becomes one of the bosses you have to fight as an undead orc in the final raid of that expac). He'd been kind of in the background after then until more recently with the conclusion to his story.

Blizzard created a musical score for each of the main characters in World of Warcraft. When Saurfang dies and Zappyboi is kneeling over him, his theme plays - but much more slowly than usual. I play Alliance for the most part; but when I heard that play the first time I saw that cimematic, I ugly cried.

Mak'gora is a challenge to duel. Usually used to take the throne, in other words Varok Saurfang challenged Sylvanas to take her Warchief's throne and stop the war so nobody will be hurt anymore. It's also noted that in Mak'gora magic is forbidden or any type of enchants, it's usually just close combat with normal weapons, no super powers added or anything, in which case Sylvanas broke the Mak'gora using death magic.

You need to watch the in game cinematic "Wrathgate" Bc the "Let it be finished" line is a throw back from his son which u see in the "Old Soldier" cinematic. Also if you really want to get into the lore I strongly recommend Nobble87 lore vids

So a little history on Varok Saurfang he is a verteran of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd wars of Azeroth and is probably one of the finest lineages of orcs the Horde has ever produced. His brother Broxigar is enshrined within the horde and nightelven societies as one of the greatest heroes of Azeroth for what he did in the War of the Ancients. He slayed countless demons in this war and even sacrificed himself in the war to give his allies more time to close the portal that the demons were using to come through. Varok's son is a casualty of the war against the Lich King from which he was risen as a Death Knight by the Lich King himself to protect Icecrown Citadel( the lich king's seat of power). Varok buried his son after the heroes of azeroth defeated him and let Varok collect him. Varok was also the High Overlord of the entire Horde( basically the highest military rank someone can hold). His mastery in combat was awesome as well as his honor in combat. He was the true heart of the Horde

Thrall and Saurfang might as well have been brothers. Saurfang was Thrall's General for so long and it brought him and his son(before he became a Death Knight) much honor. He continued to serve as Garrosh's -> Vol'jin's -> Sylvanas's General.
@Alkusanat4 жыл бұрын
Curious fact, Varok Saurfang had a brother called Broxigar who also had survivors complex and also looked for an honorable death and he died after slaying hundreds of demons and being the only mortal able to leave a scratch on the Fallen Titan Sargeras, Lord of the Burning Legion (the Demons in Warcraft's Universe). Of course he died after that while helping prevent a full scale demon invasion on the planet... but survivors complex it seems to be a theme with the family. His story os told on the novels.

@skotbean56904 жыл бұрын
The bit that the end is the Horde that sided with Sylvanas, showing respect and honour for one of the founding members of Orgrimmar, it's a extremely significant scene, I think it's the first time a king of the alliance has been allowed in Orgrimmar, as well as Varok and Thralls homecoming, as Varok said "People like us, we don't get to hide" I think this is going to end with Thrall being Warchief again

I played through as a Sylvanas loyalist (you had the choice to stay loyal to Sylvanas or join Saurfang's rebellion) because my Warchief is my Warchief, and hearing Sylvanas say "the Horde is nothing" absolutely wrecked me. I understood that Saurfang's rebels were likely to win in the story and signed up to see the other side of the Horde story (and I main a Blood Elf so I was standing with the Ranger General), but I wasn't prepared for how far afield she had gone.

Im sure it was obvious what a mak'gora was, but just a little lore session as its a little bit more than just a 1v1. Long story short a mak'gora is an ancient orcish ritual duel, traditionally only using a weapon (which can also be blessed by a shaman). There are quite a few notable mak'gora's in the lore which i do suggest you look into as they are just interesting in general, plus with one being made into a cinematic with thrall versing garrosh, which in my opinion is one of the most badass in game cinematics they ever made.

Mak'gora ,meaning "duel of honor",[4] is an orcish custom whereby someone may challenge another person to individual combat. The ritualistic duel[5] has been often used to obtain a position of leadership, such as a fight for the position of group leader,[6] clan chieftain,[7] or Warchief of the Horde, but not necessarily. Mak'gora is practiced by ogre clans as well.[8]
@SleepySloth27052 жыл бұрын
1:52 For context: Mak'gora is an orcish duel for supremacy. The rules are; 1: no armour, only clothing or nothing 2: any weapon or unarmed is allowed except for ranged, poisons, and especially not magic 3: there is no surrender, the duel ends only in death 4: no one is allowed to help you or step in mid-duel

Saurfang goal was to unite the horde and bring peace. Since the burning of Teldrasil he wanted to bring down Sylvanas and put an end to the madness that she has created. Very iconic and honorable character, he is the reason why my first char was a warrior and why i play orc, im still sad even to this day. High Overlord Varok Saurfang, a true hero.

Saurfang knew that Sylvanas would cheat, and in turn show the Horde her treachery, while finally receiving his Warrior's Death as he wished, and with honor. Great video btw!

Yeah, as you said he was intentionally trying to bait her into revealing her true motives or feelings towards the Horde through his defeat/death. Which is why he says before the fight that there only needs to be one death for this to be over, but he meant his own. After you hit up the Shadowlands trailer I highly recommend checking out some of the in-game cutscenes that fill in blanks between all of these high quality, fancy cutscenes. In particular there's one immediately before this cutscene. Then if you wanna see older stuff, probably start with Wrathgate. That cutscene blew all of us away way back in WotLK. Also the Fall of the Lich King trailer is very relevant to Shadowlands and I HIGHLY recommend watching that before starting on Afterlives: Bastion and actually probably need to watch that before the Shadowlands trailer too just for the sake of some context.

As a player that largely noped out of this expansion, this was a powerful moment, even for me. I'm not a horde player in the first place, but even watching from the sideline, to see the ways in which the horde was being corrupted this entire bloody time has been painful. The horde were not supposed to just be the bad guys, the alliance the good guys. I definitely _favored_ the alliance, but not out of any moral distaste for the horde. In BFA, the horde were unambiguously led by a villain. Not the one who wound up being the BBEG of this expansion, but she was evil... and actively going against what the horde stood for. This was the moment of the horde reclaiming its soul.

I cried when this came down. I'm Alliance. Been playing since Burning Crusade. I have played Horde, but my allegiance is to King Anduin and the Alliance. But Saurfang was very honorable, as is Thrall and Baine. I'm still not over Sylvanas burning the World Tree and killing the Night Elves and the Worgen refugees that were there and even now, well after Shadowlands finished, I'm still not sure I can deal with Sylvanas much.
