Quite fitting that you compare the song to DDR given that you quite literally have to dance to pass the phase transition in this fight.

So the story of Suzaku in FF14 is that she is a fire bird who had attained immortal life. She and three others had become an adventuring party with a heroic warrior named Tenzen. In the process, Suzaku fell in love with Tenzen, however being a bird there was little she could do to consumate her love. But, tragically, while she was an immortal bird, Tenzen was not, and he died as all men do in the end. To add a tragic twist, she eventually learned how to take on a humanoid form, and learned the secret of ressurection, much like a phoenix. So she's tortured by the knowledge that she'd learned how to be with Tenzen and save his life only after he died. So the vocals themselves in the song are set up where the male singer is singing Tenzen promising to one day be with her again in another life, whereas the female vocals are her dealing with her grief. Also something to note: The shrike flute used in the song is traditionally associated with Suzaku, the Vermillion Bird in japanese custom.

Suzaku also mistakes the player for Tenzen in the fight, (like the other four lords) which makes it more tragic. (luckily you don't kill them though) Also when you start the fight a voice line plays (like in a lot of other fights, not to mention the multiple lines mid-fight), in english it's "Tenzen! 'tis I! Sheathe your sword, I beg of you!" which is fine but the german voice line is imo heartbreaking. In german it's "Oh Tenzen, warum richtest du dein Schwert gegen mich? Hast du mich etwa vergessen?" which translates to "Oh Tenzen, why are you raising your sword against me? Have you forgotten me already?"

@@HyperGamer14 I copied this out wiki "There is also the less likely but not impossible alternative that Tenzen was a previous incarnation of the Warrior of Light, as Suzaku (though under emotional duress at the time) has difficulty in telling the two apart during a confrontation, and the Four Lords all note similarity with the player character to Tenzen."

The english and japanese vocals also play in the lore of tenzen and the four lords, tenzen being a mortal that is able to understand the words of animals, and the four lords being these giant misheard creatures that would terrify humans with just their presence

The remixers on Pulse are basically the same regular music team of FFXIV: Soken, Daiki Ishikawa and Takafumi Imamura. This one was done by Imamura, a few of his in-game tracks have already featured on this channel (Twice Stricken, The Black Wolf Stalks Again, Landslide)

"How do you play the game while listening to the music?" Through tears, usually. The female singer is Nanjo Yoshino, she is also the voice actress of Suzaku and another central character named Krile. The high pitched flute you can hear in the first version of the song is a shō, it's meant to emulate the cry of a phoenix. Right now I can't remember if you ever listened to Wayward Daughter, another great boss theme from Stormblood. I might not have liked Stormblood as much as other expansions, but boy is the music fire all the same (pun totally intended)

@@yodafani Ooof. Tsukuyomi is like.... grab your tissues type thing. The game builds you up to absolutely hate her, and think of her as a wretch... and then she gets taken down a peg and humiliated and at first you're made to cheer for that... but Gosetsu takes pity on her, and then Asahi comes in and completely exploits her, and then you have to kill her, and all she ever wanted was a decent life and no matter what she did, everything turned out terribly and she just started lashing out at the world around her. Everybody gave her hate, so she gave it right back and when given the chance to get one last act of revenge, she took it.

One of my favorite songs in FFXIV! 3:02 very fitting considering the female vocals and lyrics were provided by the lovely Yoshino Nanjo (Fripside, Love Live, Symphogear). One of the few pulse remixes I enjoy from the pulse album. The taiko drums in the beginning gives me goosebumps as it transitions into the EDM portions of the song. This particular remix is arranged by Takafumi Imamura.

This is still one of my most favorite bossfight tracks ♥The mix between something more rock/metal and then traditional Japanese melody lines and instruments are just the stuff I love most! The part at 4:13 and 4:29 (and earlier) is what sold this song for me when I did Suzaku for the first time! (For those, who also like that, check out UNDEAD CORPORATION's 紅染の鬼が哭く album :D) It's always interesting to get to know the Pulse remix songs through you as I'm not a big fan of that style of music - but at least getting to know them is amazing :D Rise is not connected to this song in anyway but I look very much forward to the day it comes on this channel :D

Maybe this can pique more of your interest but in the liner notes of the Pulse remix album, Takafumi Imamura (the arranger for this) didn't list this as one of his favourite works in the album. So he's more satisfied with a few of his other remixes than this. And yes, the Pulse album is filled with remixes in the genres of EDM, future bass, dubstep, house, techno pop, electro swing, etc. They're all done by the same 3 main composers of FFXIV too.

Some of her attacks are melodic, and so enchanting they actually force the player to either move toward, or away, from her, and you have to take this forced march into account to avoid other attacks that will happen at the same time, too. One attack puts a color on each quadrant of the field, and a series of colored icons on the outer ring that a phoenix flies through, causing each corresponding quadrant to explode in time when it does, so you have to dance away from them with the rhythm. And as some have said, the interlude phase of the fight is a literal DDR-style dance, having to input certain directions in quick succession.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it before but a few other songs in Stormblood do the similar vocal formula w JP and EN vocals Amatsu Kaze and Wayward Daughter come to mind, which btw you need to listen to the whole Tsukuyomi arrangement, its... quite a story. But if you can find the whole Nightbloom > Lunacy > Wayward Daughter I have a feeling you might like the "story" it tells

The Taiko drums really complete the original song during a certain segment and the 'Monk Chanting" enhances the melody (the part in english) A genuine nicely flowing song the original is. And with the story portion of the four lords about Suzaku the song becomes more understandable. One of the more popular tracks of the four lords but i still think 'From the Dragon's Wake' (seriyu's theme) is much better.

It's just part of the experience man. FF has had 3 tremendous composers grace its games - Uematsu, Mizuta and Soken - each with their own distinct styles and I love them all to pieces. Legit a good 1/3 of the fun of FF is just jamming away to the music (the other 2/3 being split between gameplay and story). Mizuta is my favorite because he handled 11's expansions and I love his emphasis on brass and woodwinds and generally high tempo songs, but if I had to pick a singular title for overall best soundtrack it would have to be 13. A lot of people like to shit on the 13-series of games (Unfairly IMO) but you cannot deny the quality of the OSTs. Sunlith Waterscape alone is a masterpiece, and Blinded By Light is by far the best general battle theme of the franchise.

I love suzaku fight and all versions of her son (in game, pulse remix and live version) because she one of few bosses I feel emotional about considering her story. The reason we fight her is not to kill but to gain her help and trust but she confuses us for someone else because of the us having the same light as her lover who she lost name tenzen who was a character in final fantasy 11 (I think that’s his name) and wants to not fight but we fight her anyways and her lines during the fight are sad as she begs for us to stop fighting until she caves in and has no choice but to fight. The four lords quest line is amazing and you should listen to the other two being byakko (Amatsu Kaze, which in some version, maybe all but the producer of 14, yoshi-p sings in it) and seiryu (from the dragons wake)

Obviously, Uematsu is the original composer for most of the titles and Soken for XIV but Hamauzu did an amazing job as well on X (as a co-composer), XIII trilogy and VII Remake (for arranging some of the OG tracks and creating new ones as well). Obviously, Yoko Shimomura made a fantastic job with XV OST and Sakimoto as well for XII. I feel like these are iconic too

Every Pulse song is indeed a more electronic/edm version of the song, but they are all different types. Like one is electro-swing, "Oblivion" (one you reacted to) I don't even know how to describe, it is like very distorted and intentionally weird sounding. There is also a dubstep remix of one, and some others that I don't even know the genre of beyond just electronic/edm, but most of them are a distinctly different type of that music.

Someone already explained the origins of Suzaku but the story behind why you're fighting her is that Suzaku and her companions sealed away an ancient threat with Tenzen. But at the point where your character joins the story, the seal had begun to weaken. You are tasked with gathering The Four Lords - Genbu, Byakko, Suzaku, and Seiryu - to reinforce the seal to prevent the rogue Auspice Koryu from being released. However, except for Genbu, each of the Four Lords are slowly being corrupted by the aramitama, a corrupting force likely brought by Koyru, and so your biggest challenge is fighting Byakko, Suzaku, and Seiryu in their primal forms to cleanse them of the aramitama. Byakko willingly accepts your help, but Suzaku initially blows you off until Genbu compares your character to Tenzen, which angers her. Byakko and Genbu convince her to fight and she gives in to her aramitama, consumed by her grief. Throughout her battle she has vocal queues to many of her attacks, as in her grief and due to your character's spirit, she has confused your character for Tenzen, starting the fight with "Tenzen? 'Tis I! Please, sheath your sword I beg of you!", and other lines where she is on the verge of tears "You never did make this easy, did you?" "We will wake you from this madness!" "All I ever wanted was for you and I to- to!"

It's hard to listen to this without also hearing Suzaku's battle lines that she says during the battle. I highly suggest looking up a video of this battle with voice lines turned on, like raw unedited footage of this fight. The boss's actual voice lines during the battle, meshing with the song just really pounds the tragedy into you as she tearfully pleads with your group, thinking you are Tenzen, her lost beloved as she pleads with you while you fight her, especially when she gets into this ... I don't know, half grief-stricken, half-angry voice where she goes "You never did make it easy, DID YOU!?!?" right as the fight transitions into Phase 2, and all of her lines after that are dripping in this anguish and anger that's just dripping from the VA's lips. The English VA during this fight was absolutely phenomenal.
