Important to note that crit gets better the higher you stack it meaning that at the end of the expansion, it's likely that high crit might be *slightly* better than speed once the last set of raid gear drops! If you are relatively new to the job or are having a hard time managing your Ice/Fire phases, then Spell Speed will help you out a lot more as crit is very unforgiving!

First I would like to preface this by saying thank you for the content you release. I love black mage so thank you for spreading the love. The things I'm about to share are by no means supposed to deface you or be offensive in any manner, I just thought it'd be a cool tidbit to share about sps and crit. Fortunately for the speed stackers, sps and sks also grows exponentially as you get more of it, just like crit. One way to think about why that is the case is that for every 0.01 second you take off your GCD, it is a larger percentage of your GCD. Mathematically can be viewed as 0.01 seconds off of a 2.5 second GCD is 0.4%, but 0.01 seconds off a 2.0 GCD is 0.5%. The only reason why black mage is the only one to bother with sps or sks is because Black mage is basically one of the only classes that do not rely heavily on oGCDs (be it damaging abilities or personal buff alignment) for a portion of their damage. Because sps doesn't affect the CDs of oGCDs, the more of your damage profile is in oGCDs, the less effective it becomes. Even though both grow exponentially, crit could very much grow faster than sps as I do not have the math on hand to say one or the other, I just wanted to point this out to all those reading your comments. The reason why every other class stacks crit heavily is because it's the only viable substat that grows exponentially, but black mage has two:D Sorry for the length comment but if by some chance you make it this far, I just wanted to ask about the overlay you use that shows the spells that you are casting on a timeline above your dps meter? I think it looks awesome and would love to play around with something like that:D.

@@Hocchibi Yes this is true, but you also need to keep in mind that if you go too fast, you'll be unable to weave a single oGCD during Ley lines like your pot or triplecast or manafont causing a huge dps loss due to clipping!

@@saviorkupo7032 That's true, with a standard animation lock, I think you'd need to get something like a 1.5s GCD to cause damage with a single oGCD. But I hadn't considered that with leylines you are pushing it pretty close to 1.5 haha.

sps its still better not by too much. The current BiS for 535-530 is sps instead of high crit. High crit lose by only 1% according to akhmorning

@@Hi_howrudoin That's on average though, in a crit comp and with some high rolls, crit can be higher. You'll never get a 100 on FFlogs with sps for this reason since there are players out there that will farm good RNG runs

Exactly why I play RDM (with an alt gear set) with boatloads of spell speed 😆. If your rotation is clean on any dps, you won't get bothered about it. Very zoom zoom, but I love big slow crits too 😁.

The spell speed is ironically more relaxing and comfortable for newer players, I think. When your sps is too low on BLM there's not any room in the rotation for dodging mechanics or just hitting the wrong button and having to sidestep out of it and cast the right thing. When you're used to a monk gcd on your spells, that 15 seconds to refresh your astral/umbral feels like such a gigantic window, which makes for a lot more Enochian uptime and a lot less stress.

Very interesting comparison, I knew of the two variants but never saw them side by side. I personally go something in the middle, Sps-biased but with good amount of crit. Btw I was shocked to see how you burst the MP on a single enochian window, I never thought of using both tri-cast and lay lines consecutively.

An important note is that if you plan on playing rdm/smn as well as BLM, high crit is definitely a better choice than sps. I prog some difficult fights on smn first and then learn it on blm and if you plan on doing something like this, crit makes a lot of sense. High speed is definitely more forgiving and easier to play though. I've gotten away with a lot of greedy stuff that would have punished me on high crit.

I've been doing SpS simply because I want to have that habit of the ABC (Always Be Casting) and with the new abilities introduced to Shadowbringers this is definitely possible. It's hard for me to see numbers anyway because of their font and because I'm just trying to focus on the fight and my movement that as long as I cast as many F4s and Xenos as I can I'm doing my job.

I maxed black mage a couple months ago but finally putting time into learning it after an embarassing 24 main raid where I was dead, so i went and melded all SpS but now I'm second guessing my choice and wanna meld crit. Only problem is I feel so sluggish with lower SpS and I dont 100% know these fights so I dont know locations to stand to cast and hope for a high roll crit. Any advice would be helpful for an aspiring blm main.

The worst feeling is when your tripplecast and instantcast is down enochian is dead in 2s. You are in the middle of casting despair but boss is casting aoe on you.

That's good practice, but you won't always have the freedom if you need to use xeno for movement or your thunder is already ticking and you don't have a proc. It's extremely inefficient to overwrite your thunder DoT without the proc

After looking at the Balance discord, it seems in order to have a Spell Speed BLM, you pretty much have to have savage gear? Is a Speed Build worth it at all on normal Eden/Revelation gear? I currently have 2500 Spell Speed on normal 500-520 item level gear, with few crit. materia melded in.

The concepts are applicable at lower item levels but you won't really see them shine unless you get savage gear. This applies for both sets, not just speed. Also if you want to do one or the other, commit to it and dont meld crit if you're going for speed-- invest in DH and Det

Hi there, I wanted to ask you another question. It's been a month now playing a spell speed black mage, and now want to do a crit build instead. Why? I like red mage too, and have had trouble with them sharing gear. If I go crit build, is it okay to max out spell speed on my black mage weapon? I'm currently doing my relic weapon, and want a max spell speed relic weapon to help my black mage feel more comfy, without interfering with my other casting classes.

I know this video is over a year old but I was curious, never played BLM just starting the class line, is there a BiS for a hybrid BLM? High DPS (not as high as full crit) and decent speed (but not as fast as SS)

Not really, you wouldn’t be BiS if you go somewhere in the middle. But the beauty of BLM is that it makes use of all the stats so in comparison to other jobs, nothing is wasted

As a SpS BLM main, if you want to do good dps i feel like its the opposite, since we have more action overall we need to play even more perfect with less rng involved that’s how it feels playing SpS over crit

I am just about to start joining practice parties for E6S and was wondering if it's bad to go High Crit and low speed. I am basically aiming for Crit Bis and when I asked people about it they told me E6S is very fast. My concern is will I be ok with low speed?

It'll take some practice, but yes you'll be fine. They are both good and if played perfectly perform within 0.5% of each other so it's all about comfort

Also worth remembering that a fair few speed mages seem to skip casting fire 1 at all. their rotation becomes 4x f4 + Despair.

I have always been someone who believes that there is such a thing as too much spell speed. Once you go over a certain number, you neglect your acrual true power and become useless. I typically keep my SS hovering around 2000 give or take a little depending on gear. I then make sure My Crit is dancing around 3000 and my DH is hovering near 2000 i believe. Finally I make sure I can squeeze in any determination I can. I can still cast 5 Fire4s in my opener and then Despair no issues. Though I have a technical question: Is 4 F4s to Despair better than 5 F4s to Despair? (I can cast 5F4s then Swift Despair at 2secs or 1sec left)

You should be doing 6 F4 to Despair if you go into your fire phase with full mana. 3 F4, F1, 3 F4, Despair

My standard Opener sees me as so: B3SharpT3F3, Trip, F4,Pot, F4, Ley, F4, HardCast -> F4, F4, Swift Despair, Sharp TC, Convert, F4, Finish Despair, and then begin the standard rota.

@@icyfirefists You shouldn't need to swift in the opener and if you do, you definitely don't want to clip your gcd like that. You should be precasting sharpcast at 10sec pre-pull too. Just F4 until you almost run out of mana and despair into your sharp thunder proc, convert, and keep doing what you've been doing

I use blm as a secondary class and it is far from BIS lmao, it just have all the latest nier equipment plus edenchoir(500) accesories. Blm is about 1.6 k Spell speed and I have no problem managin my spells. My materia meldings are mostly crit

After I learned that truth that crit and direct hit are multiplicative I've found more reasonings to run towards crit, I would love to run a machine gun set but 528 crit just wouldn't feel right, like I can feel the machine gun but where's those big booms that you play to class for?

Direct hit and Det is linear, Crit is the only stat that is exponential

@@neobahumuth6 Yep this is why Crit is king for basically every job in the game. BLM is the only job where you want to balance spell speed to make it playable. There are certain spell speed thresholds that make the job literally unplayable but after you pass that, it's all a comfort choice

@@JWA_1988 you gotta land all your hits with sps even more since you won't have big crit burst to make up for downtime (which hurts you even more with sps since you should be rolling through way more gcds than crit), and with party buffs and crit buffs the modifiers will start to make crits way more consistent and hard hitting, sure there will be times you get unlucky still but consistent crits still happen. If it was that bad of an rng case then everyone would recommend sps, but it's not.

@@anthony26812 I think both are totally viable and the video is correct, play preference. I just noted two sources that both state the SS does more DPS and it makes sense. However this is not some peer reviewed article perhaps its due to landing more hits with the SS, i cant say there. All i seen is SS is preferred with about 9% more DPS then crit but unfortunately hard to find data. If you get any favoring crit lmk im happy to be wrong haha.

I play every job consistently. BLM for me is mostly Crit/DHR and w/e is left SpS. Playstyle is a very good answer to this topic, specially if you have different gear sets for each caster. BLM has always been slow to me, you just need to learn mechanics to be good at it (rotation is brainless)

Alex D nahh top black mages, BiS is crit priority stats and they meld spell speed and in this game materia is a tiny increase, so look again. I just checked top ten are all crit. Even the top Samurais have low skill speed lol. It’s the end of the raid tier, crit always scales better than spd.

I go with crit cuz I think big huge nukes are cooler than rapid fire spray. Whichever has more dps doesn't matter to me, and if people complain, I will just say "mad cuz bad" :]
